My 30 favourite albums of 2012:
"Yet Again, we're the only ones"
Musically 2012 was the gift that kept on giving, so much so that I have expanded my albums of the year to a top 30. Greedy and unnecessary, you betcha. The reason for this somewhat indulgent increase is down to not wanting to miss out any albums that I feel deserve to be represented and celebrated. It really has been a strong, consistent year of varied and interesting music. Even with this expansion, and the usual special mentions, I still didn't find any room for Ramona Falls, Tindersticks, Wild Nothings, Cold Pumas, The Mountain Goats and Japandriods, all strong records that unfortunately fall into either 'forgotten about', 'not listened to enough' or 'more of the same' categories. If I ever get around to really listening to the new Swans epic, I am sure I will be blown away, but that has yet to happen.
Up until Grizzly Bears' astonishing performance at Pitchfork Paris Festival I thought Lotus Plaza would remain SBAOTY…
