Johnny I Hardly Knew Ye ist eine irische Antikriegsballade und war die Grundlage für das amerikanische Lied „When Johnny Comes Marching Home“. Es ist keine Veröffentlichung des Liedes bekannt, die vor 1863 datiert, als „When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again“ veröffentlicht wurde. Dennoch wird angenommen, dass das Lied im frühen neunzehnten Jahrhundert entstanden ist, als irische Soldaten in der britischen East India Company dienten.
Das Lied bezieht sich auf Söldner aus Athy, County Kildare, die in „Sulloon“ dienten. Sulloon ist eine Bezeichnung für Ceylon, heute Sri Lanka.
