Bergen, Norwegen (1993 – aktuell)

Dimmu Borgir ist eine bekannte Metal-Band aus Bergen, Norwegen. Der Bandname ist von der Lavaformation Dimmuborgir in Island abgeleitet und bedeutet auf isländisch soviel wie „Dunkle Burgen“ oder „Dunkle Städte“. Aufgrund mehrerer europäischer Chartplatzierungen sind sie weit über die Szenegrenzen hinaus bekannt. Im Black-Metal-Untergrund sind Dimmu Borgir aufgrund ihrer jüngeren, für Black-Metal-Verhältnisse kommerziellen, massenkonformen Werke sehr stark umstritten. Die ersten beiden Alben sind von dieser Kritik weitgehend ausgenommen.

Gründung und erster Erfolg (1993–2000)

Dimmu Borgir wurde 1993 von Stian Tomt „Shagrath“ Thoresen, Kenneth „Tjodalv“ Åkesson und Sven „Erkekjetter Silenoz“ Atle Kopperud gegründet. Noch im selben Jahr schloss sich der Keyboarder Stian Aarstad der Band an. 1994 wurde mit Ivar Tristan „Brynjard Tristan“ Lundsten der fehlende Bassist gefunden. Im selben Jahr erschien mit der EP Inn I Evighetens Mørke die erste Veröffentlichung der Band. Darauf folgte das Debütalbum For All Tid, das vom deutschen Label No Colours Records verlegt wurde. Am 9. August 1995 spielte die Band in Brohm ihr erstes Livekonzert.

Für das selbstproduzierte Zweitwerk Stormblast wechselten sie zu der Plattenfirma Cacophonous Records. Es war das letzte Album auf Norwegisch. Es wird von vielen Black-Metal-Fans als letztes, wahres Black-Metal-Album der Band bezeichnet.

1996 verließ Brynjard Tristan die Band wieder und wurde von Stian André „Nagash“ Arnesen ersetzt, der gleichzeitig als Sänger und Bassist von The Kovenant tätig war.

    You might the atmospheric style of black metal like Summoning, Darkspace, Blut Aus Nord although you might not be able to hear the lyrics in plain listening they are still great bands. It's probably the Lo-fi recordings of black metal that you don't like.. which is the general reason listeners are not into much black metal.

    i dont wanna get flamed for this but i am not a fan of black metal or this kind of music but i love Dimmu Borgir and i dont know if it is the massive soundscapes or the simple fact i can understand what he is saying. im not attacking the genre as music is purely subjective but what other bands are like Dimmu Borgir

    Can't say I am a fan of Dimmu Borgir, but from a non-fan/non-elitist's standpoint: I am now re-listening Death Cult Armageddon and it just stuns me how genious this album is at times. Catchy, clear compositions, good production, atmosphere full of Batman.. It's nothing more than loud pop with guitars and orchestra but what a blast it is.. Abrahadabra is also nice, but lacks focus.

    Even though I am looking forward to the new Dimmu album, they are going to have to work extremely hard to make an album anywhere near as brilliant as the new Shade Empire album. I doubt anything will surpass Omega Arcane when it comes to the best symphonic metal album of the year. Good luck to Dimmu though, I hope they make a great album.
