Biografie

Tokio, Japan (1999 – 2011)

Der Stil der Band kommt am ehesten dem Industrial Rock nahe, obgleich auf jedem der drei Alben auch andere Einflüsse zu hören sind. Charakteristisch für den Klang von D’espairsRay ist wohl auch Hizumis Gesang, der von sehr melodischem und fast theatralischem Gesang bis hin zu aggressivem Schreien reicht.

Zur damaligen Musik passend, hatte das Quartett auch einen sehr düsteren, Gothic-angehauchten Look mit viel Leder, Spitze und was sonst noch so dazu gehörte, um in der Sparte die Blicke auf sich zu ziehen. Seit dem Jahr 2007 wandelt sich ihr Style jedoch stetig. Stück für Stück verabschieden sie sich vom starken visuellen Look, ihre Kleidung wird immer lässiger und auch die Schminke auf ihren Gesichtern schwindet mehr und mehr. D’espairsRay legen somit das Hauptaugenmerk verstärkt auf ihre Musik.


HIZUMI (Vo.) und TSUKASA (Dr.), beide ehemalige Mitglieder der Band Le’veil, fanden sich mit Karyu (Gt.) von Dieur Mind und ZERO (Ba.) zusammen, um eine Band zu gründen. So in etwa entstand D’espairsRay am 9. September 1999 in Tokyo. Damals schrieben sie sich noch +DéspairsRay+.

Durch häufige Auftritte in Konzerthäusern und das dortige Verteilen von gratis Demotapes (z. B.: „「S」yste「M」“ oder „さくら“) machten sie sich in der Szene bekannt, bis sie gut ein Jahr später ihre erste Maxi Single „蜘蛛“ (Kumo) veröffentlichten.

Diese fand einen solchen Absatz, dass sie im April des folgenden Jahres neu aufgelegt und zusammen mit ihrer zweiten Maxi 眩惑 (Genwaku) veröffentlicht wurde (welche übrigens noch am selben Tag auf Grund der großen Nachfrage re-released werden musste).

I can say that because even when we talked about disbanding, each of us still kept saying that we wanted to continue making music together. After all I think D’espairsRay was the band all of us were able to realize what we wanted to the best. Our goals changed from time to time, but at least we have never done a thing we regretted and that’s why we have always made the best of each moment. I have always said: “A rock band is something that is going to end one day,” but I think that’s exactly the reason we were able to show the best of D’espairsRay. That’s why I have no doubt that if the day we can play together again comes, we will be able to do it. The meaning of ten years of us together will not change." / "Even though we disbanded it does not meat it’s all over." / "That’s why I feel that even though D’espairsRay is over it still exists."

    And when saying all this, I don't mean I wouldn't support Maifo or Angelo or what the four of them are doing now, no, I do support them and I am happy for them. I wouldn't be positive for a reunion if they hadn't said anything about it being possible or if they never said they want come back.

    I personally do believe there will be a reunion at some point in the future. All of them still love D'espairsRay, it is the most precious band for them after all. When joining to Maifo, ZERO said he didn't feel comfortable with the idea in the beginning because his heart belongs to D'espairsRay and if he's doing music, he wants to do it for Despa. TSUKASA has said the same. Karyu hasn't really commented that much but he was so heart broken for such a long time and D'espairsRay was and IS his baby. Since there is Angelo and THE MICRO HEAD 4N'S, we can't know what will the come back be in practice but I hope there will be one one day. I'm going to quote you some things from the interview of HIZUMI, hold on a sec.

    i think i've read that interview as well. i remember him mentioning that he'll start off with calm songs in some sort of solo-project...but after that, well, i hope there will be a reunion :D

    I have in mind, that in some interview after their disbanding, Hizumi said something about a possible D'espairsray comeback after his recovery. But I can't find that interview anymore. Do you think a reunion is possible, as Hizumi is now back in shape?
