The band’s eccentric, experimental aesthetic will endear the album to fans of fiercely independent bands likeMan Man, though Two-Way Mirror’s songs are darker and angrier. The album, also, brings to mind the anarchic glee of protest-rockers W.U. L.Y.F. If you were to soak W.U. L.Y.F. tracks like “Dirt” in a ton of reverb and add a more aggressive vocal track and you’d come up with something like album opener “Jules’ Story.” The song’s lyrics bring to mind tragic country/pop songs, with phrases like “Fell in love with the gun/ and shot my son, Fell in love with a gun/ he was 21,” all done with frantic energy.
The track is followed by the dizzying organ-backed song “Seance,” and the band’s first single “Summer Solstice” (which was aptly released on this summer’s longest day). The track builds off a pleasant keyboard hook and braids together Jonny Bell’s shouted vocals and a guitar sound reminiscent of surf rock. There’s even some...
