10. Feb. 2010, 15:17 von thisisall1wordWriting this on the back of the BBC article I just read; Warner to quit free music streaming - another major label pulling out of web.2 because it's "clearly not positive for the industry"...
How does a label measure this? I would guess that the best measurement would be that of cold hard cash. You'll have to factor in other non-cash elements and work out potential cash value from them. And there's the rub.
Easy things to measure are;
how many songs from the Warner catalogue have been played on last.fm (or spotify or etc etc etc)?
how much money back from these plays has been paid?
How many indivual users have listened to these tracks?
Easy to measure because last.fm will send all this info to Warners.
What I'm not so sure is easy to measure is what listens are converted into sales. By this I mean a user listens to tracks by an artist and then buys those tracks, an album by that artist, goes to a gig, etc.

A top 10:
Born Ruffians – Red, Yellow And Blue (Clattering sing-song with irresistible choruses)
Charlottefield – What Friends Are For (Yelping, convulsive rock. Sadly missed)
Gregor Samsa – Rest (Slowcore gems that gently tie your gut in knots)
Lau Nau – Nukkuu (Abstract pieces woven from threads of contentedness and peace)
Les Étoiles – Never To Alight (Fragile moments of dawn-touched solitude. Heartaching)
Little Joy – Little Joy (Fuzzy feelgood record just waiting for the summertime)
Parts & Labor – Receivers (Reeling noises and rolling drums suffused with epic melodies)
Peter Broderick – Float (As rich in understatement as in melancholy. Insanely more-ish)
Religious Knives – It’s After Dark (Surprisingly muscly, mesmerising rhythm and drone)
Sic Alps – U.S. Ez (Like a lo-fi static attic haphazardly littered with shambolic pop blasts)

25. Feb. 2008, 16:40 von CaribouTwo years on from their outstanding debut LP, How Long Are You Staying, Brighton quartet Charlottefield return with an ambitious follow-up that combines the raw, impassioned punk of its predecessor with sparse yet jazzy song structures and confident, complex musicianship.
On first listen, it’s clear that Charlottefield have evolved into a seriously tight unit. Opening track ‘Beatings’ marches into view, propelled by a rolling bassline and tense, terse guitars. It’s business as usual for vocalist Thomas House, whose ferocious screeching picks up where the debut left off. Melody isn’t a priority here, instead House attacks each song with the intensity of a young Guy Picciotto, howling and railing against mysterious targets, shrouded in mystery and darkness.
Anyone who’s seen the band live will already be familiar with the almost illogical tubthumping abilities of drummer Ash Marlowe. Much more than just an impressive beard, his fills and ridiculous polyrhythms are strongly reminiscent of post-rock pioneer Damon Che…
29. Jan. 2008, 18:47 von richtaylor521Since I still need to scribe some write-ups for some of the albums on my best of ‘07 list, I figured I’d post this.
Question marks (?) indicate artists that have stated they’re writing new material, but an ‘08 release is not definite; although, at an educated guess- I’d say an ‘08 release is likely.
Bold font are albums I’m looking forward to. Bold font plus red are albums I’m really looking forward to.
If there’s any mistakes please let me know. Feel free to post releases I’ve missed, also.
