    • Mixed by Geniuses

      12. Sep. 2009, 15:35 von UncouthYouth

These are my automagically generated Genius mixes from iTunes 9. I thought they were interesting enough to merit sharing, and I'm going to give each a subtitle to try to explain the common thread.

      Indie Mix
"The most mainstream indie bands ever"
Death Cab for Cutie, The Killers (...), Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips

      Praise Mix
      "Big music with Christian lyrics"
David Crowder Band, Hillsong United, Hillsong, Charlie Hall, Skillet], Phil Wickham, Leeland

      Punk Mix
"Punk that is not very punk rock"
Green Day, Nirvana, early Jimmy Eat World, Good Charlotte, (the following are not described by the subtitle): The Clash, The Ramones, Fugazi

      Rock Mix
      "Rock that is strangely rocking"
Sufjan Stevens, Jack Johnson, Bright Eyes, Ted Leo & the Pharmacists, Devendra Banhart

      Classic Rock Mix
"Music for that 50 year old accountant inside all of us"
Queen, Led Zeppelin, Tom Petty, The Who

      Rock Mix 2

    • my top 10 of 2008.. at long last..

      21. Jan. 2009, 10:07 von spikemobile

this year, i'd say, is a good year for music, at least for my music tastes. i mean Metallica finally released their long-awaited new record, and it wasn't that bad at all; Guns N' Roses finally gave birth to its 13-years in the making Chinese Democracy; my favorites - Living Sacrifice - reformed and even released a 2-song EP; Brian "Head" Welch also released his long-postponed CD; cavalera brothers (of Sepultura) are back together again - Cavalera Conspiracy; Cynic is back; Norma Jean, P.O.D., Underoath, Terror, Amenra, Coldplay, etc all have put out new releases.. and i was also introduced to some new bands that i totally lose count of.. it was a good year for my musical taste, like i said.

i'm serious, this was a tough year to choose records for my top 10. yesterday i spoke with a friend of mine, he could hardly pick 5 records he enjoyed in 2008. it's completely the opposite when it comes to me, though. first off, some honorable mentions - albums that almost made it into top 10 and woulda made in into the top…

    • my mp3-player non-scrobblings, pt. 4

      19. Dez. 2008, 11:34 von spikemobile

as those who follow, may see, i'm not the one who often changes music in his m3-player. in fact once it's in there, it stays there for a long long time, hence the non-scrobbling thing.. it's a shame it never gets scrobbled in the amounts it is played here (it woulda made the tops).

      * A Plea for Purging!!! what can i say about these guys? they're redefining metalcore, imho. a lot of good guitars, very eclectic, very fast (without being overbearing).. A Critique of Mind and Thought is excellent! very hard to pick a track that doesn't stand out, they all do.. perhaps Slaying of the Serpentine Dragon is THA track! but then again, so are other tracks.. good! good! good!

      * For Today's Ekklesia is a very tight album with no skip-tracks. tight! tight! tight! breakdowns, beautiful riffs, melodic interludes, good vocals - (not so generic) metalcore at its finest. Redemption is awesome! and so are Ready For The Fight and A Higher Standard!

    • 45 day trip.. what music would you take?

      8. Sep. 2008, 11:29 von spikemobile

this past summer i've taken another trip to central asia where i stayed for 45+ (including all the trains and planes). thus it had taken me some time to consider what to take with me as far as my music goes.. i needed smth for every mood - joyful, angry, peaceful, worshipful, apathetic, etc. so here's the list of what i had on my 2G mp3 player during the trip (in alphabetical order):

      * As I Lay Dying - An Ocean Between Us. AILD's last installment proved to be different from their previous albums and that's what made it stand out from the rest (not that the rest weren't good). i found this record very enjoyable!
      * Coalesce - Salt and Passage EP and 012:2 (Revolution In Just Listening re-release).. nothing to add, except that coalesce does it again with Salt and Passage! two thumbs up!
      * Death - Symbolic. this is pure metal classic!
      * Everything Is Made in China - 4. post-rock/shoegaze from russia at its finest. the best travel/walk-to album i found lately.
