В началото на 90-те, ако става въпрос за понятието скриймо, то трябва да бъде свързано с бандите от западното крайбрежие, които са издавани от DIY лейбъла Gravity Records (http://www.gravityrec.com/) от Сан Диего. Такива групи са Mohinder, Angel Hair, Heroin, Second Story Window, Reach Out и хардкор групи, които също имат в песните си конструкциите на изброените емо банди, но са много по-бързи и по-тежки (faster, louder, harder), такива прото-скриймо групи са Honeywell, Bread and Circuits, Antioch Arrow, ранните Portraits of Past, Swing Kids, Iconoclast, Palatka и др. Повечето от тези групи се свързват с политическия DIY хардкор/пънк лейбъл Ebullition Records (http://ebullition.com/), дело на Кент Маклард, който също списва и зина HeartattaCk. Понятието "скриймо" както го познаваме сега е първоначално и най-акуратно свързвано с ню-йоркската банда Saetia през 1997 година. Става въпрос за групи от източното крайбрежие, които са формирани от хардкор хлапета в колежите, които искат да провокират критично мислене в хардкора и да изразят собствената си агресия и идеи чрез силата на музиката. След като Earth Crisis стават известни и политизираната веган едж сцена е в пика си през 95/96, на много хлапета от тази сцена им писва от типичния метълски звук и искат да направят нещо по-интересно. Около 1997-98 групи като Saetia, You and I, Neil Perry, Usurp Synapse, Jerome's Dream, Orchid, Portrait започват да взривяват със своята музика мазета и други малки местенца, където могат да се съберат няколко човека публика. Вместо да захвърлят социалните и политически идеи като анархизма и правата на животните от хардкор и пънк сцена, както правят инди-емо групите като Sunny Day Real Estate или Texas Is the Reason, модерните скриймо банди след 1997 дори ги разширяват и избягват от скучното звучене на техните предшественици, издигат DIY идеалите в още по-голям култ и остават силно социално, политически и емоционално заинтересовани.

През 2001 и 2002 повечето от тези групи се разпадат, защото завършват колежа. Malady с хората от Pg.99 и City of Caterpillar. Комерсиално скриймо или такова, което е предназначено за масово слушане, или което следва определена мода и стил на обличане би трябвало да е оксиморон.

Starting Monday the 20th of April myself and my good friend Ross Ilott will begin broadcasting on Thornbury FM as "The Other Show".
We'll be playing a mix of classic alternative tunes, obscure oddities and a few more unheard bands we want to show a bit of lovin'.
