Burial ist der Künstlername des britischen Dubstep-Musikers William Bevan aus London. Seine Musik beinhaltet Elemente aus Dubstep, Two Step, Ambient und House. Als Person blieb der Künstler bis August 2008 anonym, biographische Daten sind kaum bekannt.

Sein 2006 erschienenes, mit Burial selbstbetiteltes Debütalbum erhielt mehrheitlich überdurchschnittliche Kritiken. Das britische Magazin The Wire wählte es zum Album of the year, im Mixmag wurde es zum fünftbesten Album des Jahres 2006 gewählt. Im September 2007 gab das Label Hyperdub das Erscheinen des zweiten Albums bekannt. Untrue erschien am 5. November 2007. Die Kritik nahm auch das zweite Album durchweg positiv auf. Seinem Myspace-Blog zufolge arbeitet Burial derzeit an einem dritten Studioalbum, an gleicher Stelle dementierte er das im Internet kursierende Gerücht, 2008 würde ein Burial-Album in der DJ-Kicks-Serie erscheinen.

Burial behauptet, er produziere fast alle seine Lieder mit dem Audioeditor SoundForge. Damit wolle er den Gebrauch von Trackern und Sequenzern vermeiden.

Obwohl beide Alben sehr positiv aufgenommen wurde, blieb Burial bis zum August 2008 anonym. In einem früheren Interview sagte er, dass „nur fünf Personen wissen, dass ich Lieder mache“ („only five people know I make tunes“). Im Februar 2008 berichtete The Independent, dass Burial ein Alumnus der Londoner Elliott School names William Bevan sei. Zu den Alumni dieser Schule gehört auch der Musiker Kieran Hebden (Four Tet), mit dem zusammen Burial mehrere Lieder produziert hat. Am 22. Juli 2008 berichtete The Guardian, dass Burial für den Mercury Music Prize 2008 nominiert sei.

    Burial's music is more similar to Garage then Dubstep. I'd say go and listen to UK Garage, then Older UK Dubstep and see which one he sounds similar to. Considering that he somewhat grew up vicariously listening to garage and jungle (via his Brother) he'd probably have a bigger influence from those genres than dubstep. I'd recommend any read the interview he had in The Wire as he is easily the most interesting artist out right now.

    Bass can be heavy without punching you in the face. Compare it to say, a Magnetic Fields song. Dubstep is such a broad-ass umbrella genre that its kind of pointless to call anything dubstep since pretty much everyone has their own working definition. Burial's dubstep in a loose, broad way the same way that Skrillex and co. are: he makes music with dubstep elements that came into existence *after dubstep*

    @admetum @slow-chan IMO it isn't either. I consider true Dubstep to be things like Digital mystiks. Then it all changed and wobble came in, heavier use of middle freq synths and a shift towards more 'popular' vocals. I think of all of the current dubstep as brostep, although its not a proper genre in itself as it isnt well defined, and extends far before its intial popular use. When most people say ' I love dubstep' I think its what should be called brostep really, its a far cry from what the genre originally was. Its a bit like saying jungle / dnb are identical. And there are some fucky nooby comments here, its impossible to funny define genres, and there will be overlaps and such. 2-step is a rhythm that is used in multiple genres incl. dubstep and garage. Burial has elements of future garage. we all know that burial is very unique which is another reason why it is hard to categorise his works genre wise

    @slow-chan No, datsik and excision are a branch of music that's derivative (not in bad way, in a music-progresses way) of the original dubstep which, at its simplest, is 2-step with heavier dub-style bass. I don't see why you're being so polemic about a broad attempt to explain how two very stylistically different artists can both be dubstep.
