I always think of Eno creating songs by experimentations in the studio. He finds a new, novel approach to an instrument, rhythm, tone, recording technique, et cetera, and he rolls with it until he gets a track out of the experiment. He probably adds lyrics at the very last step, and often the lyrics are purposely only loosely cohesive. So, I think there can definitely be more interpretations that are equally valid for the 'meaning' of the song. But no one can deny the visceral energy of this song, including the deliberately snotty vocal style, which is both funny and punk.

What is this? Who really knows, but it's scary. Aside from the wild guitar soloing, it's got a stripped-down (albeit powerful) and repetitious sound. The lyrics are random menace and decadence, underscored by Eno's snotty vocals. OK, but what does that add up to? For me, it plays as a morbid response to cock rock. "Baby's on Fire" should be a cheesy rock song, and it's title should be a metaphor (for female orgasm). Taking the title literally is a sick joke, a sick joke rubbing your nose in the sadism and misogyny underlying the song that we expect on the basis of that title. And listening to Eno's vocal tone, you know he's enjoying both the joke itself and the offense it may provoke. Even the guitar solo--which should be the swagger, the proof of male sexual proficiency--is disconcerting rather than seductive. It's too antic, fiery, and dissonant; and it goes on far too long. It's the conflagration and the screams of baby set aflame, and it's all too much.
