Biografie

Mülheim an der Ruhr, Deutschland (1992 – aktuell)

Bohren & der Club of Gore wurden 1992 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ursprünglich als Heavy-Metal- bzw. Hardcore-Band gegründet; inzwischen spielen sie jedoch einen Crossover aus Jazz, Doom Metal und Ambient. Die Stücke sind geprägt durch abwechslungsarme, minimalistische Langsamkeit und meditative, sphärische Stimmungen. Als Instrumente kommen E-Bass bzw. Kontrabass, Tenorsaxophon, Klavier, Rhodes-Piano oder Vibraphon und mit Besen gespieltes Schlagzeug zum Einsatz. Auf ihrer Webseite beschreibt die Band ihren frühen Stil als „unholy ambient mixture of slow jazz ballads, Black Sabbath doom and down tuned Autopsy sounds“. Die getragene, oftmals düstere Atmosphäre brachte ihnen auch von verschiedener Seite die Genre-Bezeichnung „Horror-Jazz“ ein.

Die Schulfreunde Thorsten Benning (Drums), Robin Rodenberg (Bass), Reiner Henseleit (Guitar) und Morten Gass(Guitar/Piano) begannen 1988 gemeinsam Musik zu machen. Sie teilten dabei eine Vorliebe für Grindcore, Hardcore, Death- oder Doom Metal. 1992 beschlossen sie Bohren zu gründen, um „ doom ridden jazz music“ zu spielen. 1993 veröffentlichten sie eine 7“ep für Suggestion Records und änderten ihren Namen in Bohren & der Club of Gore, eine Hommage an die holländische Instrumentalband Gore. 1995 folgte eine Split-Ep mit der Band Wald namens Schwarzer Sabbat für Dean Martin

1994 erschien das Album Gore Motel und 1995 das Doppelalbum Midnight Radio. 1996 verlies Reiner Henseleit die Band und damit verschwanden auch die Gitarrenklänge aus Bohrens Musik. 1997 kam der Kölner Musiker und Komponist Christoph Clöser (Saxophon, Piano) hinzu.

    Somehow it seems to me that Bohren has its own niche. In the end there aren't so many dark ambient/ doom jazz music groups, so there isn’t so much comparison and competition. Unfortunately this ''genre'' seems to be quite hard for many people to go into.

    I've recently discovered PerturBator's album: I Am The Night. Which is not the same genre as Bohren, but I feel has a similar kind of dark neo-noir vibe about it. Sort of. Either way, it's a great album, pure 80's cyberpunk. My favourite album of the year so far (though technically it was released late last Dec)

    All I can say regarding Midnight Radio is to listen to it more and gradually. I used to think the exact same thing when I first got into it and never could even enjoy it, but now it's my 3rd fave of theirs, just behind SM and BE. The songs have very similar structures but once you familiarize yourself with the subtleties of differing keyboard and guitar harmonies and rhythms, the individualities of the songs begins to be more apparent.
