I like that he never had to trash talk religion, sell sex or appeal to any of these other stupid popularity gimmicks. His stuff was political up to a point, in a sense, but he was conscious enough not to be fooled by propaganda. His stuff has both features, traditional and literary, so in many ways I think he trascends many barriers. It's a pity it took me so long to realize it.

Yeah, but His song called tempest has something to do with the shakespeare's play.. I think.. I don't know. You guys know any metal dylan cover? Or just a punk one, something heavy (i'm not a big fan of dylan's covers in general but I love lady lady lady from Duran Duran)

I think the Manfred Mann and Byrds covers are fine, I love Miley Cyrus's You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome, and some of the stuff on the Gotta Serve Somebody gospel covers collection (esp Pressing On by the Chicago Mass Choir).

I also like this one a lot, too because Judy Mowatt takes the same lyrics and gives them a completely different meaning http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fI12x3r2L4

I have only a few suggestions of my own, hence the question. First is Knockin' on Heaven's Door by the Jerry Garcia Band (not the later versions by the Grateful Dead). Don't you dare settle for the studio take on Run for the Roses, though; seek out a good, long, 10+ minute live version. It's stunning and almost (if not for Bob's Europe 1981 calypso versions, and maybe the '78 rehearsal with the Street-Legal band) the best way the song has ever existed for me. Next's The Wicked Messenger by the Legion of Mary, another of Garcia's bands. Sloooooow, ruggedly soulful and *fine.* Dylan would likewise agree with my naming Jimi's JWH selections, All Along the Watchtower (of course) and Drifter's Escape. On the more modern side is Dark Eyes by Iron and Wine & Calexico, off the I'm Not There soundtrack (but not in the movie) in a gorgeous and unusual arrangement, very different from Bob's solo acoustic take but catching ethereal hold of the song's spirit as it goes.

A question for those among us who think Dylan's voice makes his versions of his songs definitive not only among renditions of Dylan songs, but among songs in general - that is to say, people who value Dylan as much or more as a singer than as a songwriter. I certainly do (more). What covers of Dylan songs by others are actually worth keeping around? I don't mean just "passable" or "not offensive." I mean actually worth listening to often *even though* we have Dylan's versions.
