  • Blue Suede Goats: The Top Eleven Songs from 1:48 to 1:50

    13. Mär. 2009, 5:43 von rockrobster23

I'm fighting a cold and feeling mildly stunned, and therefore this post blows tiny goats. If you're new to this series, you should read one of the other ones first. Or not. If you read this one first, be prepared to share my mildly stunned condition.

I've been in a really fun early rock n' roll/garage listening phase recently, which probably influences this list a lot. On the other hand, this length lends itself to that era and genre.

    Intro
    3:27
    2:32
    4:08
    3:40
    1:57/1:58
    3:14
    6:20-6:24
    2:54
    4:42/4:43
    2:25
    4:20
    2:35
    5:55-5:59
    3:35
    2:44
    6:50-6:59

The Top Eleven Songs from 1:48 to 1:50

    1) SpielenRave On--Buddy Holly
For reasons stated in the intro to this series, I don’t want to get into “big and important” lists like “top 50 songs of the 50s,” but if I were to make such a list, this rocker would be a strong contender for the top spot. If you were to tell me that "Rave On" is the greatest song in rock history, I'd think you couldn't possibly have considered all the alternatives (you don't have enough time!), but I'd also think that you made a pretty good choice.

    2) Come On--Chuck Berry
Early rock n' roll had an open-hearted joy that seems missing from most music today. I don’t think it’s entirely that simple; I think it’s the way we (I) read it. It's likely that I miss the undertones of older music, stuff that would be obvious to contemporary listeners. This song is about a frustrated lover; the emotional tone of frustration certainly hasn’t changed—it’s the way we express and read it.

Chuck's SpielenLet It Rock could have pretty easily made this list, too.

    3) SpielenHeat From the Day--Blood on the Wall
Stabbing guitar, throb bass, reckless momentum. Sounds like Sonic Youth sloppily covering Wire, which is a winning formula.

    4) Fell in Love With a Girl--The White Stripes
One great riff all the way through, but it doesn't last nearly long enough to get annoying. A mid-70s producer would have insisted on stretching it to three minutes, thereby ruining its trashy perfection.

    5) SpielenBlue Suede Shoes--Eddie Cochran
Sloppy, alive, and full of grease in a way that, after the late 50s, wouldn’t much be in evidence (outside of garages) until punk reached back to revive those virtues. Elvis’s more popular version is pretty happenin’ too, but it sounds slick compared to Cochran’s original.

    6) SpielenGuess Things Happen That Way--Johnny Cash
When Hank’s woman does him wrong, he gets really sad, and hopes she’s going to be sad too. When Johnny’s woman does him wrong, he gets all stiff-upper-lip and fatalistic about it. Or shoots her, if he feels like it.

    7) There Goes My Gun--Pixies
Spaghetti western taking place in a dorm.

    8) Big Machine--The Minders
It's a pastiche of 60s garage psych clichés: funhouse organ and distorted blues guitar, topped with marshmallow-sparkle pop harmonies. While not really original, this kind of Nuggets-style revival hits my sweet spot.

    9) The Tiny Goat--The Gothic Archies
If this song had been a hit, we would be referring to social misfits as “tiny goats.” I bet there’s a subset of a sliver of hipsters in Boston or someplace who do just that. “A sliver of hipsters”: new collective noun?

    10) We're the Replacements--They Might Be Giants
John Flansburgh has explained that "The Replacements" is "kind of a pun" about how bands follow each other on the road, and isn't necessarily about The Replacements except by example. But I prefer to think of it as the theme song to The Replacements' Saturday morning cartoon show, which was a cult hit in my imagination.

    11) SpielenKoka Kola--The Clash
This piss-take on advertising would be preachy if it wasn't so full of dumb humor (e.g., sending your snakeskin suit to the vet instead of the cleaners). I love the way Mick Jones's so-smooth backing vocals sound like a soft drink commercial.

    Almost Made the List

    SpielenLove You More--Buzzcocks
    Spielenfranks theme--Tom Waits

If the trepanning gets the snot out of my sinuses, the next entry may be better. But I make no promises. Dude says he's never trepanned anybody before, and I'm like, whatever, man.

  • Favorite albums of 2008.

    8. Feb. 2009, 23:16 von eagleheartt

Below are the top twenty albums of 2008: no compilations, best of's, or EPs. Yeah, it's about a month late. But, in my defense, it was a really busy year and i had several tough choices to make. After the top two or three, the rankings don't really matter very much. And before you ask, For Emma, Forever Ago was 2007.

    20. Colour Haze - All
Taking much of their inspiration from Sabbath, Hendrix and krautrock, German power trio Colour Haze have been blazing a trail of stoner rock for nearly 15 years. Elephantine riffs and rolling rhythms mutating over long stretches of time, All is at times cliched but nevertheless a fuzzed-out, swirling ride of meditative jams and psychedelic bliss.
    SpielenIf

    19. The Wave Pictures - Instant Coffee Baby
Wonderful, sincere lyrics perfectly capturing everyday events and emotions and a quirky, unforgettable voice falling somewhere between Davy Henderson and Finn Andrews, Instant Coffee Baby is a unique English gem presented in an unshowy C86 setting.

    18. Blue Sky Black Death - Slow Burning Lights
Recorded in 2007, singer Yes Alexander provides vocals for the normally hip-hop Blue Sky Black Death's sixth release and third of 2008. (They actually had five in '08 if you include their production of Gutta's - Heads Will Roll and the instrumental release of their 2006 album The Holocaust). The alluring, ethereal voiced Alexander, also of the band The Casual Lust, shifts this album into breezy, dream pop territory.

    17. The Tom Fun Orchestra - You Will Land With A Thud
An indie band with the word orchestra in it's title normally has it there for irony's sake. It's more often a lone guy with a half dozen Casios or a trio of ragged and sloppy folk rockers. With nine members, the term nearly makes sense for the sweeping, raucous Nova Scotian Tom Fun Orchestra. Included are: a trio of guitars, violin, upright bass, accordion, banjo, drums, mandolin, clarinet and trumpet. The gruff, Tom Waits-ian voiced lead singer proves to be a wonderful anchor to an energetic, chaotic, but always melodic group.

    16. LITE - Phantasia
It seems that many of the inanely labeled ‘math rock’ bands fall into a trap of mechanical rhythms and syncopated guitar that often lack much excitement Technical, virtuous but also very hard-hitting and at times even contemplative, Phantasia is able to breathe some life into this supposed genre.

    15. School of Seven Bells - Alpinisms
Twins Alejandra and Claudia Deheza have incredibly alluring voices and their passionate, perfectly harmonized vocals define this dream pop wonder.
    SpielenChain

    14. Sennen - Where The Light Gets In
Tagged as both shoegaze and post rock but not quite either, Sennen's long-overdue full length debut proves they have without a doubt mastered opposite ends of the dynamic spectrum, from the noisiest rock to the softest ballads. Vocals are either absent or arranged into soft, sweetly sung harmonies. Sennen might have been formed according to specific formulas, but the way in which they mix them up makes this album a much richer, multi-layered experience.
    SpielenBlackout

    13. Peter Broderick - Float
Brodericks' second release of the year, Home, seemed to have gotten the bulk of the press. Odd, as Float is clearly the better release. Perhaps the folk based Home is more accessible than the classical sounding Float? Regardless, Float is a sparse, cinematic and atmospheric album containing not just piano but also violins, cello, drums, banjo and guitar. The youthful Broderick (also a member of the band Efterklang) may be ushering in a new beginning of modern classical music.

    12. Moscow Olympics - Cut The World
Formed in the summer of 2006, the members of Philippine band Moscow Olympics must have been creating music for much longer than the two years the band has been active. Moscow Olympics’ smooth blend of post punk and shoegaze proves to be nothing short of brilliant. Cut the World certainly leaves you wanting more and it's brevity may be it's only flaw. Their music nearly seems like a resounding roar directed at anyone who deems post punk and shoegaze as genres that are dead or irrelevant.

    11. The Night Marchers - See You In Magic
The Night Marchers (led by John Reis, former member of Drive Like Jehu, Rocket from the Crypt and Hot Snakes) are just here to have fun. Garagey, punky and noisy with the faint aroma of the Flamin' Groovies and The Nerves, the San Diego band's debut is pure, unapologetic rock 'n' roll.
    SpielenOpen Your Legs

    10. Murder by Death - Red of Tooth and Claw
Like 16 Horsepower, Murder by Death explore a darker side of country-rock with lead singer Adam Turla owing much of his sound to Johnny Cash and Nick Cave. His low baritone meshes nicely with each of the songs, infusing them with aggression and a certain weariness as well.
    SpielenFuego!

    9. The Weepies - Hideaway
Husband and wife duo Deb Talan and Steve Tannen follow up their 2006 release, Say I Am You, with another indie-folk gem. The album plays to their strengths: tight songwriting, beautifully layered harmonies, and the kind of sweet, introspective lyrics that tug at your heart.
    SpielenHow You Survived the War

    8. Firewater - Golden Hour
Tod A's authentic and righteous lyrics, covering his divorce and George Bush among other topics, unexpectedly merge well with the eastern influenced music. Golden Hour is a travelogue of the three years he spent in India, Turkey, Pakistan, and Indonesia, where he used local musicians to highlight these angry yet poignant songs.
    This Is My Life

    7. Frightened Rabbit - The Midnight Organ Fight
Wonderful melodies and catchy choruses make this album highly accessible and belie the sometimes dark, sad lyrics. It's impossible not to be drawn into the warm, quivering vocals driving this Scottish band's sophomore effort.
    SpielenOld Old Fashioned

    6. Drive-By Truckers - Brighter Than Creation's Dark
In perhaps what is their least 'rock' album, the Truckers have released a group of diverse, exciting, slightly twisted tales of the American South. At 19 songs, perhaps it is a bit too long, but there are too many great tracks here for that to be much of an issue.
    SpielenDaddy Needs A Drink

    5. Boston Spaceships - Brown Submarine
Robert Pollard (of Guided by Voices fame) releases yet another classic. Brown Submarine is a pop punk album, made by and for kids who've worn out the grooves on their Cheap Trick and dB's records. Even at 50 years of age, Pollard can still write pop songs better than most: catchy, infectious, fabulous pop songs no longer fashionable, actually they never were fashionable.
    SpielenYou Satisfy Me

    4. The Abbasi Brothers - Something Like Nostalgia
Defying easy genre classifications, Yousuf and Amman Abbasi create intricate, dreamy soundscapes using digital instruments, electronics, guitar, piano and found sounds. It's hard to be believe this is their debut, as mature and polished as it sounds.
    SpielenStacey's Day Parade

    3. Blue Sky Black Death - Late Night Cinema
DJ's Kingston and Young God created a bold, diverse set of songs for their fourth release. Backing their dense production, guitar, keyboard and drum work are further contributions from violinists, organists, trumpeters, synth players and vocalists. On their first release of 2008, the duo showcase amazing versatility, with influences from lounge to electro.

    2. Robert Forster - The Evangelist
Former writing partner to Grant McLennan (who co-wrote three of these songs before his untimely death) in The Go-Betweens, Forester has crafted a very moving and unsurprisingly melancholy tribute to his long time friend. Haunting and wistful, yet never sentimental, it's some of his best work in or out of the Go-Betweens.

    1. The Drift - Memory Drawings
San Francisco’s The Drift specialize in chilled out post rock influenced by jazz and dub. While more guitar based post-rock bands (Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky) focus on tension and release in their slow building epics, The Drift occupy a more relaxed zone. Their sophomore effort contains some wonderful trumpet work, with the drums and upright bass perfect compliments.

Other artists who released great albums in 2008:

The Gaslight Anthem, Blood on the Wall, Okkervil River, Titus Andronicus,Evangelicals, Bowery Boy Blue, Neil on Impression, Upcdowncleftcrightcabc+start, Shugo Tokumaru, Sun Kil Moon, The Daysleepers, Randy Newman, Matthew Robert Cooper, God Is an Astronaut, Calder, The Hold Steady,Anathallo, Abigail Washburn, The Black Keys, Parts & Labor, John McKenna, Tearwave, No Age, Cruyff in the Bedroom, Followed by Ghosts, Mr. Bear, State Bird, Throw Me the Statue, The Postmarks, Helms Alee and WHY? among others.

For those following links from: Portishead, Fleet Foxes, Santogold, Coldplay, Katy Perry, Jack Johnson, The Kooks and Nine Inch Nails i genuinely hope i've educated you.

  • Dandelion Radio - February 2009 shows

    1. Feb. 2009, 19:13 von DandelionRadio

With the Festive 50 now over, we get back to regular shows - plus a new DJ, Katherine Godfrey.

    Andrew Morrison:
Andy's 2-hour February show offers much more than the sum of its parts. small crew are exclusive session guests, providing four excellent new tracks. Brand new music comes from The Race, Y Diwygiad, James Yuill, Joy formidable and Shortwave Fade as well as a storming new remix of a Bomb the Bass classic. There's striking sounds from Andy's unsigned new find Raw Milk, and further unsigned tracks from Galchen, The War Crimes and others. Add Scott's Funky Five Minutes and Teresa's Tasty Tips into the equation, and there really is no reason not to factor the show into your leisure time calculations this February!

    Jeff Grainger:
Jeff croaks his way through his first show of 2009 with thankfully enough brilliant tunes to distract you, dear listener, from the fact he totally lost his voice, to tonsillitis, the day after he recorded this show.
Jeff will be playing some of this months and recent releases; Carosel, A Middle Sex. The Joy Formidable and Headless Heroes. Along with some 'Northern Soul', 'Dub' and a few freebies; I Have Clones, Red Steers and Healey Island.
The countdown to The 'All Tomorrows Parties' Festival gives him the ideal opportunity to play classic tracks by Throwing Muses and Shellac. There'll be a small tribute to folk singer Odetta, who sadly died at the end of last year and for reasons that will be most apparent; a track by Julie London.

    Katherine Godfrey:
Katherine's first show for Dandelion was recorded in a loft during a storm. Listen carefully and you'll hear the wind howling across the microphone. Or is that just the dark, atmospheric soundscapes of music from Italy's Alampo records?
Keeping your ears toasty warm this February will be music from Torsten Profrock, Tanlines, Ala Muerte, and a featured EP from Oxford newbies UTE, whilst Action Beat will be crashing onto the airwaves with the force of a hurricane in the featured album for the month The Noise Band from Bletchley.
With Distance and Reso's foundation shaking dubstep, and the glorious clatter of HAWKS, Yowie and K.I.T. in the mix, you'd better batten down the hatches.

    Marcelle:
    The good old medieval days

Marcelle displays in her new show a keen interest for music made years, even centuries ago. She plays an electronic music musician who draws his inspiration from 17th century baroque instruments and reveals which British band who dabbled in 14th century Italy ,eh, only 18 years ago.
She has a Zomby in her show, and Animals: An innocent little dog opens her show, appearing in an oil drum and Suicidal Birds fly side on side with Nightingales. 26 giants make an appearance alongside kung fu zulus. Men are also welcomed, especially as they use a John Peel sample in of their tracks. The Chicks in this month's show are On Speed and sing that everything is alright.
Marcelle investigates which song is a certain 'party ruiner' and champions Monty Python-esque words like 'Libythth' and 'Vinkepeezer'. She laughingly plays a 78 RPM record on 33 1/3 RPM and gets pushed aside twice by a very strong Cardopusher in three hours.
The Look Back Bore Records Of The Month (February 1979) are oddly shaped and an eight minute reggae cover. By the end of the show we speak French and come to the conclusion that we have drunk one beer too much; no wonder Mark E. Smith appeared twice in the show. With so many musical adventures we can only say: I Tank U. (77% Vinyl Guarantee)

    Mark Cunliffe:
We are getting nicely into the New Year now and that resolution to cut back your food intake by only eating the filling of Custard Creams is getting a bit shaky. So far it's only been a whole Bourbon but a full Custie is only a matter of time....
So what do we have in this months show? King Clarentz does some seductive cooking and we get down to some punctuation in the Ghetto. Asian Dub Foundation sit on the fence for once and regret it with some singed crack hairs. Tigerstyle and Panjabi MC go dhol to dhol in a classic bhangra face off. Maga Bo & Xuman might have well been the pyromaniacs who set Asian Dub Foundation's fence (and arse hairs) on fire. Radio Datacha might be flying in something that sounds a bit like a sectioned helicopter and Spektre has gone planting banana skins around the cosmos....what are they on? Black Acid finds Amy Winehouse on the roadside and we have a live special from a band who's line-up changes completely from gig to gig, that band is God Has Tits
If you're still on the reduced Custie diet then congratulations, it's a filling diet....

    Mark Whitby:
For the small price of spending three hours in Mark Whitby's company this February, you'll be able to hear an exclusive advance four-track preview of Welsh/Antipodean project Cwtch as well as tracks from new and forthcoming albums by Toykult, Filastine, Fol Chen and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. There's also a little something from the double EP by Beirut and (brace yourselves) a cassette-only release from the magnificent Twin Lion.
Sonic Youth join us to say a fond farewell to Ron Asheton, while Cosmo vs Flapsandwich say a less tearful TTFN to George W Bush. You'll find Fuck Buttons remixing Fever Ray, a Qemists remix and a good solid hard dose of electronic noise from the likes of Schaua, Androgyn Network and NONEWYORK. Plus a load of bands with "dogs" in their name, Well, two anyway.

    Matt Jones:
The boy Jones is back with 2 hours of music to banish the misery of the worst month of the year. February is accepted by all known life forms as rubbish, but happily, the likes of Mrs Cakehead and Dilworth bring some strange sub tropical Lancashire warmth to those of you feeling the winter is a never ending lead weight dragging your soul further into a tarry mire of misery.
Strangeness and joy abounds still further as the gleeful mania of 3Sachetti competes with the schizoid delights of RomanianMyth for your attention and love. Elsewhere in the show, there is the little matter of hiphop, balkan brass, assorted forms of clicks and beats, a sprinkling of brand new dubstep and some lovely folk from Senegal. Oh, and another corking tune from the ever fantastic RevPorl. All in all, it's better than a kick in the face with a wet stick.

    Pete Jackson:
February, like Atilla The Hun, is known for being short and cruel, so let's liven things up with an amazing session from the extraordinary Lord Numb, a whole bunch of new craziness from Bordeaux's second-greatest export Boxon Records, some noises made in the 1960s and 70s in Japan, Jamaica and Fort Lauderdale, Florida and some equally wonderous noises made more recently in Wales by Recordiau Safon Uchel and in Newton-Le-Willows by 13 Amp.
We'll also tip our hat to mark the passing of garage guitar god Ron Asheton with some classicStooges.

    Rachael Neiman:
After missing our January show, "The Rachael Neiman Experience" returns for a jam-packed 2-hours in February with fabulous new art pop from Vanilla Ride, Shrag, Cats In Paris, And What Will Be Left Of Them, The Teenagers, Das Wanderlust, Monocle Rose and 2 Hot 2 Sweat, glorious indiepop from The San Marinos, The Give It Ups, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Procedure Club, foxes, Sparky's Magic Piano, Help Stamp Out Loneliness, Hari and Aino, The Lucksmiths and the latest single by Norwichcore heroes Bearsuit.
Elsewhere we have jaunty pop from The Momeraths, The Loves and Lucky Delucci, riot grrrl goodness from Fever fever and Stilletoes, melancholy pop from Tiger MCs and The Grizzly Owls and dramatic pop from Amanda Palmer. We also have two tracks from our featured compilation, A Place In Space, released on Invisible Girl Records from Elevation and Hektor.

    Rocker:
A three-hour show with three fantastic featured LPs - by The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, The Nightingales, and Emmy the Great. There's also new tracks from such acts as Clockwork Four; Phil Wilson; She Keeps Bees; Cats on Fire; Knight School; Mascot Fight; Lean Tales; The Mai 68s; and The Wednesday Club. There's a new single from Penetration, as well as a vintage Pauline Murray track, there's also a gloriously messed-up remix of a track from the current Grace Jones LP, as well as her gloriously messed-up 29-year-old cover of a post-punk classic.
There's dubstep from Wireman and Quarta 330, and electro / house from Dusty Kid; Milton Jackson and Sei A; and an amazing remix of Rennie Foster by Youngsters. There's also vintage soul from The Miracles.
This month's Peel's Big 45 is a blues classic from 1960, and my new "Educating Elizabeth" feature debuts with a Northern Soul standard from Herbert Hunter.
As well as little known acts, here's a little known fact, in fact it's a guest little known fact from The Nightingales: "If you keep on walking into a barbers, one day you're gonna get a haircut."

    Simon Hickinbotham:
Whilst being mildly surprised at getting a show together for February, I'm nevertheless delighted to be presenting tracks by The Griefs, Two Minute Noodles, AK, Major Grave and Alien Hand.
We'll also be hearing more from those we've met before, including The Giant Leeches, Terry Edwards, Bill Nelson and Joy Division.
There's also a couple of half-cocked attempts at regular features - the long half of a "short song / long song" segment. The short song just wasn't short enough to meet the strict admission rules. I also attempt to play songs from two bands with very similar names - Mein and Maiun - but have trouble pronouncing both. Enjoy!

    Yank Sizzler:
Behold the end of hibernation here on the Yank Sizzler Show following the fear of everything Santa. New recordings from The Homosexuals, Mammoth life, The Knux, Black Christmas, The Weakends, The Dutchess And The Duke & King Khan.
My disturbing love of Mississippi Records continues as I bring the old world immigrant song of the amazing LP "I Don't Feel At Home in This World Anymore". And of course we thrive on the collective gamut of blues, Swedish garage jazz, blistered fingers rock n roll, ska classics, English folk, highlife, soul, punk and indie gems with cuts by John Lee Hooker, The Thing, Abe Vigoda, Dark Meat, Free Kitten, Anne Briggs, Pissed Jeans, The Blues Busters, Rex Williams, Blood on the Wall, {{{Sunset}}}, Carla Thomas & many more.

  • British Sea Power!

    18. Jan. 2009, 2:46 von Semitemos

alt title: because Nothing is Too Insignificant for a less than detailed Journal entry.

I finally got around to listening to some cds I bought this summer, including Awesomer by Blood on the Wall. And right after that was British Sea Power, a band I had listened to once, and not given a second chance since then. The fact that it's still on my computer at all attests to the extreme hardship I have deleting music of any kind, but when I listened to them this time, they were COMPLETELY AWESOME! I mean they fit my mood perfectly -- catchy but really chill at the same time, so I listened to them all the way through.
Following the same pattern, Feel Good Lost, which was next, sounded nicer and less boring than it had before, but not quite as much :)
