Bornemouth (UK) (1990 – aktuell)

Big Big Train stammen aus Bornemouth (UK) und finden sich erstmals 1990 zusammen. Den Kern der Band bilden Texter und Komponist Gregory Spawton, Produzent Andy Poole und seit 2009 Sänger David Longdon. In einem Interview mit dem Progressive Newsletter führt Gregory Spawton an, dass diese drei so etwas wie die Regisseure für die Musik von Big Big Train seien. Sie würden sich um das Songschreiben und den Aufnahmeprozess kümmern und hätten die Dinge fest in der Hand. Wichtig sei es jedoch, zusätzlich von anderen Künstlern Input zu erhalten, die sich auch selbst in die Songs einbringen können.

Andy Poole, der mit Ian Cooper gemeinsam in der Band Arcshine spielt, trifft bereits1987 auf Gregory Spawton, nachdem der seine Band Equus drei Jahre zuvor wegen seines Studiums verlassen hatte, und sie entdecken, dass sie die Vorliebe für Progressive-Rock-Bands wie Van Der Graaf Generator und IQ teilen. Bald beginnen sie, einige Demostücke aufzunehmen, und gründen nach der Auflösung von Arcshine mit Ian Cooper zusammen im Jahr 1990 schließlich Big Big Train. Schlagzeuger Steve Hughes und Sänger Martin Read folgen wenig später. Im Oktober 1991 nimmt das Quintett ein 8-Spur-Demoband auf, das unter dem Namen „From the River to the Sea“ 1992 neu aufgenommen und auf CD veröffentlicht wird. Im Folgejahr veröffentlicht die Band ihre zweite Demoaufnahme „The Infant Hercules“ und 1994 schließlich das noch 1993 in zwei Wochen aufgenommene Debütalbum „Goodbye To The Age Of Steam“, das bereits den typischen melancholischen BBT-Sound vorstellt, stark beeinflusst durch den Progressiv-Rock der 70er Jahre.

    Actually, might have something to do with the fact that the songs are so long. The Underfall Yard is almost 23 minutes long.... don't get me wrong, I love long songs, but that's stretching it a little I think.

    Don't judge what you think of this group upon a first listen. Listen, let it marinate for a few days, then keep listening. They get better with each listen and that's saying something because they're brilliant!

    I can't describe how I have enjoyed my first listening of "The Underfall Yard" album. In my humble opinion, along with bands like Phideaux or Sky Architect, I think we are living now the best revival era of 70's prog rock. (not the last joke of Robert Fripp or the self-ripped Yes album, which for me is good, but not progressive...)

    Normally, whenever I hear a song, I can easily tell if I like it or not. I can even say that I was a bit disappointed with The Underfall Yard, mostly because of the beginning. But after listening to it a few times more I can say it is an absolutely beautiful album. Then I realized that I felt the same about English Boy Wonders before. There's something absolutely unique with this band. With BBT, I rediscover each piece every time I listen to it and feel like ashamed of the first impression.

    Amazing new EP. The Wide Open Sea is so epic. Master of Time is great too (don't know the original Philips version), love the instrumental interlude and the vocal outro in that song. I noticed that the intro & outro in Fat Billy Shouts Mine (two chords) also appears in a quiet piece of Victorian Brickwork, just before a sound explosion.

    The Underfall Yard is such an amazing album. Recently discovered them, about 8 days ago. Wish I'd known them before! The Underfall Yard (song) is a masterpiece, 22 minutes of pure art. Favourite passages: 6:24 Welcome-To-The-Machine-Pink-Floyd synth riff kicks in + 17:36 Very emotionally sung passage "The Underfall Yaaaard". And about everything in between :)
