The original press from 1991 of UP has it listed "Your Life's Retribution". That Relapse CD was from the mid 2000s.

  • Steve-Mo

Maybe so, but: "we call it retribution when talking about the set list or mentioning it in general...but the original title is Your Life's Retribution.... first line in the song...." - Steve Flynn. / That was harsh of me, I just think Choy is both pretty overrated and a bit of a liability considering his departure shortly before recording Jupiter and IIRC doesn't write for the band.

Track 3 on "Unquestionable Presence" is simply called "Retribution" here's actual proof from the back of the album - (http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fc3.cduniverse.ws%2Fresizedb%2F630x630%2Fmusic%2F013%2F6930013.jpg&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cduniverse.com%2Fsearch%2Fxx%2Fmusic%2Fpid%2F6930013%2Fa%2Funquestionable%2Bpresence.htm&h=554&w=630&tbnid=_CGAkgr61USiDM%3A&zoom=1&docid=ryvToylN8x6n2M&itg=1&ei=BoujU6bcKMeRyATIjoHAAQ&tbm=isch&ved=0CFQQMygvMC8&iact=rc&uact=3&dur=255&page=2&start=20&ndsp=29) - that was released on Relapse Records. Please correct/fix this error to the correct name of the song. Once again, the correct song title is simply "Retribution" the incorrect title is "Your Life's Retribution", don't believe me view the link and look at the back of the album.

"It's too bad they didn't upgrade from Tony Choy, but at least it will be better than on Jupiter." You don't like Choy's work with Atheist? Who'd have been the better fit? I'm a bit skeptical even if Choy's is in, cause I really haven't gotten into Jupiter even though I really wanted to like it. The production is a bit obnoxious, too. An organic production approach in the vein of Elements would be sooooo refreshing, but that's not going to happen with the guy producing it who mixed Jupiter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Suecof Umm, well. Fuck. After reading that production discography all hope is officially lost as far as sound goes.

I really wish Suecof weren't producing it. He really fucked up the mastering on Jupiter and I can't imagine it'll be any better this time around. Other than that I have high hopes.

Yeah, you're probably right. I was aware with Coroner and Watchtower being a big influence for Chuck but for whatever-reason I never thought them being that big influence for Death but now that I think of it, it definitely makes sense that those bands were reason. And yeah, Atheist definitely were the first 'technical' death metal band with Nocturnus and Atrocity.

    März 2014
  • sssssssev

@ Covenantt, about Atheist's influence on Death... well, it's a bit funny, Chuck was apparently talking shit about the kind of technical music Atheist were making at first. But I guess meanwhile he was developing a taste for technical bands like Coroner and Watchtower, and with Paul and Sean from Cynic bringing their influence into the band, Death was bound to get more techy. I wouldn't say the Atheist albums had much direct influence on Death, that came from elsewhere probably, but Atheist were definitely among (if not the) first of that new approach to death metal.

Personally not a fan of Elements. It's good and all but it's a bit boring in my opinion, I really tried to get into it, listened to it countless times but it just didn't 'click' with me. Though, I'll always say they're one of the best technical/progressive death metal bands, for Piece of Time and Unquestionable Presence alone!

Anyone else who thinks that Piece Of Time and Unquestionable Presence had lots of influence in Death's music? After Piece Of Time was released Death made Spiritual Healing which was a lot more technical than Leprosy and Scream Bloody Gore. Now, Human was released like a month or two after Unquestionable Presence but it probably had been recorded/composed before Unquestionable Presence was released. However, you really can hear a lots of similar stuff on Individual Thought Patterns. It was Death's first progressive death metal album and IMO it's actually a bit jazzy. Not as much as Unquestionable Presence - which is quite jazzy but not jazz-fusion - but there are some things that are fairly jazzy. I just want to know other people opinions about this, do you think that Chuck got inspiration from Atheist?

  • sssssssev

Well it is audible, you're right. My god the guitars are annoyingly in-your-face up front in the mix, too. You can hear clipping on Elements tracks, too, (at least on the re-release version I have) but it's not as bothersome when the production isn't otherwise as overkill.

    September 2013
  • Cassandra-Leo

It's strange you say that, because I find clipping to more noticeable the better a system I'm listening to it on. There's no way in hell I'd notice it on laptop speakers but when listening on my car stereo (which is quite good) or on my headphones a clipped recording becomes immediately apparent, especially if I have an unclipped version of it to ABX with. It's gotten to the point where I usually manually declip albums with iZotope RX Advanced if they're badly clipped enough; for example Jupiter ends up looking like this, which is how it should've looked in the first place. But it's obnoxious that I should have to edit the audio in order to enjoy it; the record companies are deliberately releasing an inferior product. It's even worse when a vinyl master is clipped, but that's a rant for another day.

    September 2013
  • Cassandra-Leo

"Lol, get a decent pair of speakers then. I hear no clipping whatsoever." Then you have terrible hearing. Jupiter is clipped almost to Death Magnetic levels.

"I don't see anything wrong with the production there. It's decent." The mastering job is atrocious, with clipping throughout the recording, and the bass is nowhere near audible enough for an Atheist album. Jason Suecof should hang his head in shame.
