Biografie

Oldenzaal (Niederlande) (1987 – 2001, 2007 – aktuell)

Asphyx (von gr. asfixia = Pulslosigkeit bzw. engl. Asphyxiation = Erstickung) ist eine Death-Metal-Band mit Doom-Metal-Einflüssen aus Oldenzaal (Niederlande).

Geschichte

Die Band wurde 1987 gegründet. Nach zwei Demos und einer EP erhielt Asphyx einen Plattenvertrag bei Century Media. Bei den Aufnahmen zu „Last one on earth“ ist Martin Van Drunen der Sänger und das obwohl die Band ihn ohne sein Wissen noch vor der Veröffentlichung aus der Band warf. Er nahm den Gesang ohne den Rest der Band auf und erhielt nach Abschluss seiner Tätigkeit die Nachricht von seinem Rauswurf. Aufgrund von internen Bandproblemen gründeten einige Mitglieder von Asphyx sowie Wannes Gubbels von Pentacle 1996 die Band Soulburn. Unter diesem Namen wurde ein Demo und ein Album veröffentlicht. Schon kurze Zeit später verwendeten die Mitglieder von Soulburn wieder den alten Namen Asphyx. Die Band blieb dem Label bis zur Auflösung 2001 treu.

Martin Van Drunen war ebenfalls bei Bolt Thrower und Pestilence aktiv, sowie als Sessionsänger der Schweden Comecon (Band). Seit 2003 ist Martin als Sänger bei den Deutschen Death By Dawn tätig.

Am 10. Januar 2007 wurde die Reunion der Band offiziell auf der Homepage des Party.San Festivals mit folgender Besetzung bekannt gegeben:
Martin van Drunen - Gesang
Wannes Gubbels (auch Pentacle und Bunkur) - Bass/Gesang
Paul Baayens - Gitarre
Bob Bagchus - Schlagzeug

Die offizielle Reunionshow wird auf dem Party.San Festival 2007 stattfinden.

    Asphyx is really i mean great band and sometimes i think that they are really underrated.They should be known more and appreciated more.There is a quite awesome extreme metal scene in Netherlands and there are amazing bands like Asphyx,Gorefest,Sinister,Pestilence,Legion Of The Damned,Severe Torture,God Dethroned in Netherland's metal scene but there is an issue that concerns and annoys me a lot i want to mention about it.Why the hell Netherlands's metal scene is only remembered and known for female fronted symphonic metal bands? I really noticed that most of the people only listen symphonic female fronted metal shit stuff from Netherlands and they do not have any idea about that bands which i said above.I mean Netherlands's metal scene mostly remembered and known for Within Temptation and Epica.That is bullshit.And there is an injustice towards to Asphyx,Severe Torture,Sinister etc.Therefore, in my opinion that is unacceptable.[2]
