  • Top 15: Negatives

    31. Okt. 2009, 11:34 von the_colors

Because it's good to take a step back and be impartial sometimes.

    1) Sonic Youth - They aren't afraid of dissonance and rambling noise passages. Many people prefer songs that are pleasing to the ear and that get right to the point. SY also aren't afraid of obscure literary references. Many people don't like it when things go over their heads.

    2) Sleater-Kinney - Corin's voice is...unique. And Carrie's isn't always the most polished. And I love Lora MacFarlane, but SK weren't quite as badass until Janet Weiss joined.

    3) Tegan and Sara - OMG LESBIAN STEREOTYPES. They inspired a generation of girls to get that damned sideways haircut, and I love and hate them for it.

    4) Death Cab for Cutie - Lovesick song about drinking; lovesick song about travelling; lovesick song about the past; lovesick song about a lost girl; repeat.

    :D This is fun.

    5) Radiohead - Don't a lot of people claim to dislike Radiohead because of their supposedly over-enthusiastic fans? That's just silly. As for the band itself, maybe Thom's voice is a negative for some people? Oh, and their stylistic jumps. Some people just HATE how they went from OK Computer to Kid A. (Kid A is my favorite Radiohead album, so...whatever, man.)

    6) Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Karen O's voice. A lot of people haven't heard her actually sing; they've just heard one of the screechy/orgasmy songs. Oh, and some people have a thing against all those early-2000s trendy NYC bands.

    7) Portishead - They're weird and morose.

    8) [the band in 8th place doesn't exist in that form anymore. I'll discuss them in their current incarnation] Noiseaux - They're so fucking goofy. It's because they're German. I worry about whether anyone will really *get* them in the US. (I <3 you guys! Please don't kill me)

    9) Lamb - Man, I don't know. They came out of the British trip-hop wave. Oh, I know. They're one of those bands that couldn't quite recapture the greatness of their debut album. Lou's voice was never as big; the songs were never as expansive; the lyrics got so dumb as to be painful in some places.

    10) Beck - He's been around so long that some are worried that he is starting to repeat himself. Lyrically? Yes. And what uplifting lyrics they are. (Fun game: listen to a Beck album and count how many times he says 'funeral' or refers to death. Don't be fooled by happy-sounding songs.) Musically? Eh, from time to time.

    11) Sade - Lol! There is nothing bad about Sade. Are you kidding? They get pigeonholed as a smooth jazz band. But they're actually, you know, talented.

    12) Ani DiFranco - She may have made the modern 'all lesbians must play acoustic guitar' movement popular. No, I don't like it one bit. (Well, a little.)

    13) The White Stripes - Goddamnit, Meg White. Your sketchy drumming is crucial to the raw & drrrty atmosphere that is a WS song. But do you *actually* know how to drum?

    14) Beirut - I will tolerate no negative feelings toward Beirut. If people can't handle European-tinged orchestral carnival music, that's their own problem.

    15) Stars - Sometimes it feels like they're being a bit *too* earnest, if such a thing is possible (I mean you, Torquil). Though if it is, is it necessarily a negative thing?

Which song describes what would occur between you and a prostitute?: Stan Getz - Soul Eyes
Your lover on the side?: The Killers - SpielenRead My Mind
The teenage queen and the loaded gun, the drop-dead dream, the chosen one. A southern drawl and a world unseen, a city wall and a trampoline. I don't mind if you don't mind, 'cause I don't shine if you don't shine. Before you jump, tell me what you find when you read my mind. Slipping in my faith until I fall, you never return that call. Woman, open the door. Don't let it sting. I wanna breathe that fire again.
How about your wife or husband?: Ted Leo and The Pharmacists - SpielenParallel or Together?

Which song best describes your parents?: My Chemical Romance - Cemetery Drive

I don't want to hold back. I don't want to slip down. I don't want to think back to the one thing that I know I should have done. I don't want to doubt you, know everything about you. I don't want to sit across the table from you wishing I could run.
Which song best describes your friends?: Andrew Bird - SpielenImitosis
Which song best describes your school?: Rilo Kiley - Close Call
She was born on a brightened pew to a gypsy mother in a bucket of tears. Her good looks could have sailed a ship, but her will alone could have sunk it. Funny thing about money for sex: you might get rich, but you'll die by it. It's gonna be a close call.
Which song best describes your public personality?: Jack Off Jill - SpielenNazi Halo
Bring your IQ and try to understand. Just 'cause I'm listening don't mean we're still friends. Can't fix my problem: you've crossed a thin line. You can't just work it out. Not with me, this time. You go solo: your faggot rainbow, your junkie ego, your tragic disco, your Nazi halo won't save you this time. You're so predictable. No shadow of doubt. When you are suffering, know who sold you out. Fuck your opinions. Fuck your lack of spine. When you are miserable, know that I'm just fine.
Which song best describes your private personality?: A Perfect Circle - Passive
Leaning over you here, cold and catatonic, I catch a brief reflection: what you could and might have been. It's your right and your ability to become my perfect enemy. Wake up and face me. Don't play dead, 'cause maybe, some day, I will walk away and say, "You disappoint me. Maybe you're better off this way." Why can't you turn and face me?

What is the story of my life?: Bright Eyes - The Difference in the Shades
What is/was high school like?: Sahara Hotnights - Quite a Feeling
How can I get ahead in life?: The Mountain Goats - San Bernardino
We got in your car, and we hit the highway. Eastern sun was rising over the mountains, yellow and blood red beams, like a kaleidoscope. And flaming swords may guard the garden of Eden, but we consulted maps from earlier days, dead languages on our tongues, holding on to our last hope. And the day was bright and fine, and the highway sign said, "San Bernardino welcomes you."
What is the best thing about me?: Gregory and the Hawk - Isabelle
And the ground's already hard where it's been dug in. I've gone this way too many times, but the pick keeps going deeper and I'm not turning back, so Isabelle, try to understand. I know just what to say, but it's incorrect to say it. How do I break it to him, the death of one who's staying? And all I think of now is a way to get under and a way to get out. Isabelle, what can I do for the naive pain it's causing you?

How does the world see me?: Jack Off Jill - SpielenStrawberry Gashes
I lay quiet waiting for her voice to say, "Some things you lose, and some things you just give away." Scold me: failed her. If only I'd held on tighter to her pale white skin that twisted and withered away from me. Watch me lose her. It's almost like losing myself. Give her my soul and let them take somebody else. Get away from me. Watch me fault her: you're living like a disaster. She said, "Kill me faster, with strawberry gashes all over, all over me."
Will I have a happy life?: Wilco - Side With the Seeds
What do my friends really think of me?: Placebo - Slackerbitch
Your memory will fade. I didn't mean it. You've always had it made. I didn't mean it. I know you feel betrayed. I just wanted to get laid. I didn't mean it. Slackerbitch, fag-hag whore, looks real cute for lips so sore. Always knocking on my door. You come across impure. I didn't mean it. Goddamn immature: I didn't mean it. You act so insecure. You hate me now, I'm sure. I didn't mean it.

Losing Virginity: Yeah Yeah Yeahs - SpielenSoft Shock
Fight Song: Tegan and Sara - Call It Off
I won't be out long, but I still think it better end. You take your time coming over here. I think that's for the best. Call, break it off. Call, break my own heart. Maybe I would have been something you'd be good at. Maybe you would have been something I'd be good at. But now we'll never know. I won't be sad, but in case I'll go there every day to make myself feel bad. There's a chance I'll start to wonder if this was the thing to do.

This journal post does not contain any reviews!

Apologies for it appearing in the reviews section of these gigs but I had no idea that last.fm is set up to do that simply because I linked to each gig from this journal post. This post is for my own reference really and it's taken too long to write it out for me to be bothered to take it down or remove the links.

Yeah...this is a list of bands I've seen live. This is just a way for me to keep track. I don't care if you don't care.

There are a few local shows missing here, because they were so long ago that I don't remember who was playing. Any bands missing links are local, unless they happen to be well-known enough to have a Last.fm page. I'll add more as I go to more shows.

    For all who love Saint-Petersburg

We try to defend our beloved city from Gazprom attempts to install huge and awful gazskribe/skyskribe in the heart of it. Installation of gaz symbol higher than church crosses and angel, which for centuries guarded our sky, is the devil idea.

In former days at the place, now occupied by Gazprom, were located old towns Nien and castle Landscrone, churches and cemeteries near them. In 1970 on this place was erected monument (4,5 m high granite rock with bronze desk) devoted for those, who struggled in Second World War, who work and died during the cruel Siege of Leningrad. For our citizens who all long 900 days died from hunger and bombs but not betrayed their native city.

This monument missed – and all remains of our Great Past had to miss under devil Gazprom tower too. Include human bones, which were finding in this ground by archeologists, and now lays in boxes at the place Gazprom so severe want to grasp.

Gazprom is the richest company but we do not give in.

Help us in this struggle to save the beauty of Saint-Petersburg! Put Your sign at site http://bashne.net/. (http://bashne.net/?page_id=74)

  • how I discovered my top 15

    12. Okt. 2009, 11:42 von NightlarkSong

    1. Modest Mouse
in 7th grade, the song "Float On" was getting major airplay on hit radio stations in my hometown, but I hadn't paid attention to it. then I heard a DJ say "listen to this song. it's weird, but you'll love it if you really listen." it was true! I loved it, quite a lot. in 8th grade I got hold of a live version of the song "Black Cadillacs," then moved on to a few of their more popular/recent songs later in the year. I got most of their discography in 9th grade and managed to obtain all of it in 10th grade. now they're my favorite band.

    2. Regina Spektor
at the end of 9th grade, I was getting a ride from a senior girl who was playing a song off "Begin to Hope" on her car stereo. she mentioned it was great warm-up music because we were both in choir, then said my singing voice was a lot like Regina's. I was curious so I downloaded a few songs off Begin to Hope. I loved them, so I got hold of her earlier work and loved it even more.

    3. The Beatles
um, the first time I can remember hearing the Beatles is when watching "The Parent Trap" (the crap version with Lindsay Lohan) over and over in elementary school- "Here Comes the Sun" was on that soundtrack. then in middle school my mom played several songs of theirs on the hour-long drive to school in the morning- "Yesterday," "Rocky Raccoon," "Blackbird," "Ticket to Ride", etc. etc. plus this gorgeous, a cappella version of "Because" that I haven't been able to find anywhere since. I didn't really start listening to them until the summer after junior year, though. I got their whole discography, listened to the whole thing in 2 nights, and listened to nothing but them for another week more.

    4. Animal Collective
back in 10th grade I got hold of a few tracks off "Strawberry Jam," which I sort of liked but they certainly weren't one of my favorite artists at the time. I came across them randomly, either on last.fm or on a recommendation, I'm not sure which- guess it wasn't too memorable. but then I heard "The Purple Bottle" which became, almost immediately, one of my favorite songs ever. I played pretty much nothing but that song all of summer 2008. then I got "Feels" and it was one of my top 10 albums ever. by the time "Merriweather Post Pavilion" came out I was a diehard fan and caught up in all that hype. didn't disappoint by any means. I played almost nothing but MPP for January 2009. when "In the Flowers" kicked in for the first time, swear to god it was nearly a religious experience. it was that awesome.

    5. Iron & Wine
my favorite song, of ever, is "The Trapeze Swinger" by Iron & Wine. I actually heard about it on an internet forum back in 8th grade (2006) downloaded it, thought it was too quiet, forgot about it. in September 2007 I came across it again and decided to give it another try. uh, probably one of my best decisions ever, seriously. I fell in love, played it nonstop for a while. I got a few more of his songs and was a bit disappointed- they were amazing, but nothing really compares to "Trapeze Swinger." anyway, eventually came to appreciate all of his stuff and I listened to it a lot throughout high school.

    6. Mindless Self Indulgence
alright, confession time: I think MOST of the music I listen to is pretty good, by everyone's standards, but I have a soft spot for the shit I started listening to in middle school (Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, My Chemical Romance etc.) anyway: the bassist for MSI, Lyn-Z, is married to the singer of MCR, Gerard Way. I heard a lot of fans talking about how awesome MSI was (after discovering them through the new MSI/MCR connection, I guess) and I decided to give them a try. they kicked ass. so hard. I met a girl in 10th grade choir class (yeah, seriously) who loved them as well, which made me seek out all of their albums so we could talk about them.

    7. Ani DiFranco
I barely remember how I discovered her. I just recall that "As Is" is the first song I heard, and that was September 2007. then I moved on to a few songs like "32 Flavors" and "You Had Time". I didn't listen to her that much until late 2008 and had another period of listening to her a lot in May-August 2009. I introduced my best friend to her, and my bestie adored her music as well, so now we both listen on a regular basis and talk about how awesome she is!

    8. The Killers
oh my god, The Killers. I have such a weird relationship with this band. okay, imagine: it's the summer before 7th grade, and "Somebody Told Me" is all over the radio. I like it, a lot, and I spend a lot of time watching the music video for it. now picture this: it's 7th grade, early 2004. my household never had cable TV before this point. when we finally got it, on weekends, I would stay up literally all night, waiting for MTV to play that glorious, non-stop, hour-long block of music videos. when I first saw the video for "Mr. Brightside", it was like this shimmering phantasmic amazing THING on my TV screen. it was all glittery and strange and gorgeous and omg, I'm gushing, but I fell in love. (with Brandon Flowers.) haha, and the song. I downloaded most of "Hot Fuss," fell in love with the whole "murder trilogy" idea. for some reason I didn't get Sam's Town or Sawdust until years later, but I snapped up Day and Age as soon as it came out. I liked it all but nothing has compared to that moment at 3 am on a weekend night in middle school, watching Mr. Brightside for the first time, mouth hanging open and eyes wide.

    9. Beirut
I downloaded 3 Beirut songs in April 2008: Nantes, The White Whale, and Postcards from Italy. "Postcards from Italy" turned into one of my favorite songs. when I first heard it I felt glued to my computer chair, it was one of those stunning moments where you hear something lovely for the first time and you feel like you're soaring. that moment where everything drops out but his voice and the horns, then the drumbeat comes back in- still floors me. anyway I listened to this constantly in spring 2008, while driving in the mountains and sunning at a watering hole one time in particular, that sticks with me. then downloaded the rest of his stuff and listened all through that summer and 11th grade up until now.

    10. Fall Out Boy
oh, Fall Out Boy. I love this band and I hate this band, both in equal measures. seriously. I saw the video for "Sugar, We're Goin' Down" on the same run of late-night MTV videos that I mentioned before, loved the song, thought the video was boring and stupid in general. (still think that to be honest.) so that was 7th grade, and in 8th grade "Dance Dance" comes out as their second single, and I fell in love (ferociously.) I was madinlove with Pete Wentz, as a lot of middle school girls were at the time, and I remember researching them on the internet, confused to find Pete wasn't the singer (who the fuck is Patrick Stump? I thought. haha oh wow. irony! two years later he was one of my favorite vocalists in modern pop music.) and had this SRS DISCUSSION of "wow, I love how high his voice goes!" (in Dance Dance) with my best friend in 8th grade. I downloaded their whole discography at the time and mainly focused on "Cork Tree," but I also dug the older rougher-sounding EPs. I loved them through 9th grade then entered this period where I was like, oh my god, this band genuinely sucks, and stopped listening to them. but I just can't give them up, you guys. they are awful and they are adorable. jesus.
