Helsinki, Finnland (1990 – aktuell)

Amorphis ist eine im Jahr 1990 gegründete finnische Metal-Band aus Helsinki.

Der Stil der Band unterlag seit der Gründung einem steten Wechsel. Zu Beginn spielte die Band Death Metal, den sie jedoch bald mit Progressive-Metal-Elementen und Einflüssen aus finnischer und arabischer Musik weiterentwickelte. Mit dem Verzicht auf Growlgesang wandte sich die Band vorübergehend vollständig vom Death Metal ab. Erst auf dem Album Eclipse verband Amorphis wieder Growlgesang mit den progressiven Elementen der Vorgänger. Neben der Musik sind auch die Texte von der finnischen Kultur inspiriert, einige davon entstammen der finnischen Gedichtsammlung Kanteletar oder dem Nationalepos Kalevala.

Amorphis gilt als eine der erfolgreichsten finnischen Metal-Bands. In ihrem Heimatland erreicht sie seit zehn Jahren mit nahezu jeder Veröffentlichung eine Platzierung in den Top 10 der Charts. Im Juni 2009 erschien das neue, insgesamt neunte Album Skyforger.
Bandgründung (1990–1996)

Amorphis wurde im Herbst 1990 von Jan Rechberger, Esa Holopainen, Tomi Koivusaari und Olli-Pekka Laine gegründet. Die drei Erstgenannten hatten Ende der 1980er zusammen in der Speed-Metal-Band Violent Solution gespielt, die sich jedoch im Laufe des Jahres 1990 aufgelöst hatte. Koivusaari war seit 1989 außerdem Mitglied in der Death-Metal-Band Abhorrence gewesen.

    'Circle' is definitely better than 'The Beginning Of Times', but that doesn't really say much since 'TBOT' was, strictly speaking, the worst album in 20 years of Amorphis history in my opinion. I still cringe whenever I hear "You I Need" or that horrible abomination called "Song Of The Sage", that I still feel like it might be a troll attempt from the band. Still, I bought 'Circle' yesterday, gave it a few listens and I must say they seem to develop pretty nicely. I like the addition of more black-metalish vocals here and there ("Nightbird's Song") and some heavier riffs, but the melodies (especially the piano ones) are also better than the ones on 'TBOT'. All in all 7/10 album, 'Silent Waters' is still better.
