A few months back, my computer's CD burner broke down which has given me the gift of rediscovering the fucking JOY of making mix tapes, and I thought I'd start sharing some of my better ones on last.fm. And what better way to start than with a mix that's sure to eradicate any metal cred I once had, but an ABBA
compilation. Besides consisting of (most but not all) my favorite songs by the Swedish pop masters, the tape is also divided into two halves: shit you can--and should!--dance to, and shit you definitely can't dance to. This wasn't deliberate when I was picking out songs to put on the tape, but after I'd accumulated 90 minutes' worth of tunes, I noticed that about half of it was upbeat, 4/4 tunes, the ABBA shit everybody knows and loves. Conversely, the other half of the songs were by and large the type of moody, depressing ballads that a fourteen-year old girl living in 1976 would listen to cheer herself up after she'd had her heart smashed to bits by some upperclassmen football star.
