    - It's podcasting time! Episode 8 of the Big Scary Podcast is now up online via the Multimedia page of bsmrocks.com and of course iTunes. This one was recorded down a little side street near the Barfly in Camden - as ever, no expense spared - and features interviews with This Town Needs Guns ("I was vommiting into my eyes") and Mimas ("We're kinda hoping to battle with Hercules") as well as music from them both alongside tracks from Tubelord, Meet Me In St Louis, Secondsmile, Pulled Apart By Horses and the demo of the month from Calories. It's the usual 40 minutes of thrills, spills and awesome music so you should download it, like, right now!

Off to lunch with Andrew WK tomorrow. Rock n roll. Check the blog next week for excited rants.

    - Check out the newly updated Friend of The Family website for some hot competition action where you can win copies of the new This Town Needs Guns and Mimas albums, along with the new Tubelord 7"…

  • September y'all

    1. Okt. 2007, 16:40 von setyoursights

As of this month I now write not one, but two blogs. This makes me a real life blogger. Check out my second, almost-daily scribe over at http://blogscarymonsters.blogspot.com - something I'm not ashamed to admit I setup purely for the amusement the title gives me.

September was pretty nuts really, with workloads going through the roof as Meet Me in St Louis' debut album, Variations On Swing' was finally released. Having recorded it early on this year it's so nice to get the thing out and at last start to see and hear the delighted reactions of you all as you realise just how right I was all this time when I said it's a bloody great record. This month we also had the new split album from This Town Needs Guns and Cats and Cats and Cats. Both bands have recorded what I believe to be their best material to date, an opinion shared by NME, Drowned In Sound, Radio One and a plethora of journalists from other magazines. These two new releases can both be bought from www.bsmrocks.com so why don't you just do that, hey?
  • July

    7. Aug. 2007, 13:26 von setyoursights

There's a reason why July is my favourite month, but the weather cerainly isn't it! Rain of biblical proportions saw half of Oxford submerge under water, festivals cancelled and national panic spread as I started to wish my friend had taken me seriously all those years ago when I asked him to build me an arc.

The month started in delightful style though, with the annual Cowley Road festival in Oxford. Anyone who's ever been will know what fun it is, with thousands of people filling the long and varied street, with strange processions (this years included a giant ant riding 6 bikes), loud music, raves in newsagents and a restaurant for semingly every nationality spilling out onto the streets to sell their goods. Whether or not good is a word I can use to describe the squid on a stick I plumped for, I still can't decide.

House of Brothers uploaded a new demo track from his forthcoming EP to Myspace. Slightly different vibe to his previous work, and very much worth a listen.

  • June

    7. Aug. 2007, 13:24 von setyoursights

June was a funny ol' month. It started with me collecting the master CD for the new BSM sampler, 'Record Label Shmecord Label', from the side door of a police station, and ended with Chris Benoit, a famed and much adored professional wrestler, killing himself and his family in somewhat strange and unexpected circumstances. Obviously this had no real bearing on my life, but shocking nonetheless.

A small handful of gigs were attended in June. In London there was Owen/City On Film/House of Brothers at Lark In The Park (where I saw not one band thanks to arriving late, venue being rammed and poorly designed, and me drinking too much flavoured cider) and the first Huckster night with Tellison, Cats And Cats And Cats and some other bands which I unfortunately missed due to two of the above reasons. In Oxford we had two nights running at the Port Mahon, geographically the closest venue to me since the closure of the Zodiac-come-Carling Academy…

First off, Big Scary Monsters Records is delighted to announce that two of it's prodigal sons, Meet Me In St Louis and Secondsmile, will be coming together in a marriage that only musical lovers can dream of: a hand-packaged split 7 single and accompanying short UK tour.

The single features one brand new track from each band, MMISL's 'I've Got Knives In My Eyes, I'm Going Home Sick' (the first song you will ever hear from the new record) and Secondsmile's 'Aspen Fears'. Both, of course, are fantastic. The lovely slab of black 7 vinyl will be in shops from 11th June packaged in a pink and…
  • More March news!

    1. Apr. 2007, 23:17 von setyoursights

Another month down, 2007 is disappearing quickly but it's not all bad news as the clocks tick on to British Summer Time and the nights are starting to show hints of sunshine. Personally, I can't bloody wait.

March has been a crazy busy month despite taking my first holiday in a very long time, enjoying a lovely week lying around in the Spanish sun with Gemma doing nothing but enjoying being back on a beach, drinking in ridiculous theme bars and, well, that was it. Pure bliss.

Data.select.party, the heroes of part 2 of the 6-part Alcopop! 3 CD singles club came to rock Oxford and guess who was in attendance? Elijah Wood. True story.

Meet Me in St Louis entered and two weeks later exited Miloco Studio in Hoxton Square, London, absolutely exhausted. Alex Newport pushed them hard but their grubby little paws now clutch tightly onto one of the very best albums I've ever heard. Two weeks on and I still can't stop playing it. It'll be mastered in the coming weeks, after a couple of very slight tweaks to the mixes…
