Everything is a mess with Greek tags on last.fm - in this group we discuss about ways of cleaning up the mess and about the correct or best ways to tag Greek artists and bands. Anyone is welcome to join whether he/she speaks Greek or not. The discussion is done mainly in English - as far as this is possible anyway.
Unfortunately, people tag their music in every possible way. So, for example we have Μωρά Στη Φωτιά, Μωρά στη Φωτιά, Μωρά στη φωτιά, μωρα στη φωτια, Μωρα στη φωτια and of course Mora Sti Fotia. See even more variations here! O_o
That last one (Mora Sti Fotia) is what's called "greeklish" i.e. writing Greek words with Latin characters and it actually has two forms:
- writing Greek with Latin characters trying to approach the way a word is pronounced in Greek,
- and writing a word with Latin characters trying to approach the form that the word has with Greek characters - which is of course totally confusing to people who don't know Greek. For example writing "θήτα" as "8hta", but which is pronounced something like "theeta". In the example of Μωρά στη Φωτιά, Mora Sti Fotia would be closer to the right pronunciation but many people tend to tag the artist as Μwra Sti Fwtia trying to approach the Greek "ω" with the English "w".
Although there are some rules for writing Greek with Latin characters (see Romanization of Greek) few people really follow that rules so it ends up really confusing when it comes to our matter - tagging that is. You don't want to know what is happening to the songs titles :-( That's why we think tagging in Greek is the best way. Last.fm also wants to adopt the artist's native script.
Want to help? Use MusicBrainz to tag your songs correctly. There are not many Greek releases in MusicBrainz but you may also consider adding some if you have an account - or even consider creating an account in order to add some releases... =]
Also: Vote for the correctly tagged Greek artists. How? See this thread.
Take a peek at the connections of the group to see what we believe is a correctly tagged Greek artist.
And here is a good answer from zexpe to people who believe we should stick with the Latin characters for Greek artists because it makes it easier for people who don't speak or read Greek:

...I like the idea of finding a "correct" English tag. However, last.fm want a single page for a given artist - not two - and I understand that trying to find a single English transliteration for every non-English artist name is very tricky. So I see why last.fm want to adopt the artist's native script and I support their decision. It is after all an international website with various language versions - why stop at just English transliterations? They'd have to find Turkish, Russian, French etc. transliterations for every artist too! Also don't be put off by searching. When the redirects are in place, a search with the English transliteration will lead to the page with the artist name in Greek, which will surely be a worthwhile education for English speakers, no? The wiki will still be in English in the English-language version of the site.
A lot of people get hung up on the issue of search when it comes to native script artist names, so I thought I'd give a demonstration of how this works and why it's not a problem: Do a search on the English transliteration, Alkinoos Ioannidis, of the Greek-Cypriot artist: Αλκίνοος Ιωαννίδης. You'll see the first entry to appear is the Greek artist name, Αλκίνοος Ιωαννίδης. Hover your mouse over the Greek text and you'll see the English transliteration, Alkinoos Ioannidis, as a mouse tip. This feature also works if Αλκίνοος Ιωαννίδης is listed in your recently played tracks or in your charts. You'll also see in this first entry in the search results an extract of the wiki page: "Alkinoos Ioannides (Greek: Αλκίνοος Ιωαννίδης) is a Greek Cypriot composer". How is this a barrier to Greek music for English speaking people? I think it's a nice compromise for an international website. Most artist pages do not redirect to the native script version of the artist name yet, but when they do it will work like this. The following table is for non-greek speakers who might like to have an idea of how the greek alphabet is and how the letters are pronounced. =]

Important: Check The Auto-Correct Correction Brigade group if you are interested in making the auto-correction system of last.fm better. And if voting for all these mistagged artists seems a lot of work to you then check this batch voting script in order to vote, among many other, for over 600 Greek artist name corrections automatically! See also the Greek Tag Corrections thread if you want to help by submitting mistagged artists.
