    Reformation, if you will

for those not in the know, the above link is one of Robert's aliases. Sounds like a return to more guitar-oriented Main. My guess is probably more akin to Firmament-era than Hydra/Calm-era.

  • I think it could be great. I just take it to mean he's going to be doing more group/guitar-based material, rather than solo/laptop stuff. I'd be delighted to hear an updated version of the Motion Pool sound. Seefeel have set the bar pretty high for UKPR reunions, so he'd better bring it!

Did a little blog post about this here:

I certainly hope that's the case. Although I do like the post motion pool ambient stuff, I always hoped he come out with far more music in the vein of Rail and Crater Scar etc. Admittedly there were a few tracks of that type on the Hertz EPs (but not nearly enough).

  • anyone have any bootlegs of their early live shows?

  • No but... WOAH! Just read this on Stephan Mathieu's Twitter:

"Robert Hampson and I are collaborating on a live incarnation of MAIN. We are currently looking for concerts, please be in touch with ideas."
    http://twitter.com/#!/stephanmathieu/status/60704923406434304

This is totally unexpected but extremely exciting news. For those of you who aren't already massive Mathieu fans, I highly recommend The Sad Mac, A Static Place and Heroin, his collaboration with Ekkehard Ehlers.

  • Interesting news! By chance I've been listening to Stephan a little bit recently and enjoying his stuff without knowing a great deal about who he is. Cool stuff.

  • I'm totally addicted to A Static Place right now and Stephan Mathieu is gradually working his way up my Last FM charts, so I couldn't be more delighted to hear that he's involved with the reformed Main. Hope I get the chance to see them play.

  • Talking of which, just read this on Stephan Mathieu's Twitter:

"MAIN (Robert Hampson +Stephan Mathieu) is available for US and Canada shows between OCT. 01-12 and 15+16. 2011 | Please be in touch"

  • There's a piece by Neil Kulkarni on Main on the Quietus site today:

    http://thequietus.com/articles/07056-a-new-nineties-an-introduction-part-one-main-feed-the-collapse

  • Great article! The only thing that bugs me is that he doesn't use the term "post-rock", which is pretty cowardly and frankly weird given that the whole Q&A can be read as a detailed explanation of what the term was originally supposed to mean. The editor responded, calling me "fucking rude", which certainly wasn't my intention.

  • Haha, Doran does seem to have a bit of a short fuse sometimes, so I wouldn't worry too much about that. Thought it was a fair point myself! BTW apparently the next piece in the series has a new (and I do mean new-new not new-old!) interview with Ian Crause.

  • Kulkarni replied to my comment. Pretty weakly, unfortunately. I'll respond when I have time.

  • Main playing Primavera

also lists Mark Spybey (Download, Zoviet France, Dead Voices On Air, etc.), Gordon Sharp, and even Scott Dowson as contributors to new Main recordings.

  • Holy crap, that's actually really exciting. Obviously, I'm a huge Stephan Mathieu fan. Gordon Sharp is the Cindytalk guy - his last album was amazing. Scott Dowson was a founder member (Was he in Loop? Sorry for my ignorance, I guess I could just Google it). And I think Mark Spybey is from here in Vancouver. There's some debate as to whether he was ever in Zoviet France, though.

  • yes, Scott was the last touring guitarist for Loop*. I don't know much about Spybey. I have some DVOA and Download stuff, but never really looked into z*v.

*I get a lot of conflicting information about whether or not it was solely Robert doing guitar work on Loop's studio albums. Can anyone clarify this? He was doing lead guitar in the Nail Will Burn on 120 Minutes at least...
