UK Post-Rock Sharity

  • UK Post-Rock Sharity

A lot of the albums that get mentioned on this forum are no longer in print. Some of them are so obscure that they rarely even show up on file-sharing networks like Soulseek. Therefore, the only way most people can access a good deal of classic UK post-rock is via full-album downloads on "sharity" blogs. I'm starting this thread so that UK Post-Rock Group members can let us all know about UKPR sharity downloads they've discovered.

    Here are the ground-rules:

    1. Please don't post anything that's still in print. If an album's available, please support the artist by buying the CD or (preferably) the vinyl.

    2. Please don't post "The Five EPs" by Disco Inferno as that's rumoured to be getting an official release later this year.

    3. Please don't post direct links to downloads. Link to the original blog posts, so that the blogger responsible gets some traffic. Leave a nice comment, saying "thank you".

    4. Don't feel obliged to limit yourself to UK post-rock as such. If you think a sharity blog post will be of interest to group members, let us know.

    5. If you're a blogger and you want a link removed, let me know and I'll do my best to make it happen in a timely manner.

    6. Remember that a lot of these things will be posted on slightly sketchy file-sharing services that may produce a lot of pop-ups and other stuff that may interfere with your computer (particularly if you're a Windows user).

Okay, having got that out of the way, here are a few that I've discovered or been otherwise turned on to. Big shout out to group member Joe Morris, who posts a lot of this stuff on his blog The Blackened Air (http://theblackenedair.blogspot.com/).

id like to thank you :)
for introducing me to disco inferno
i'd never heard of them and their great

  • Yay for Disco Inferno!

Maybe they'll get back together. Check the comments on this YouTube "video":

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kkoB6tPygv0

In the meantime, does anyone have any actual Disco Inferno videos? Or any UKPR vids, for that matter?

  • Terminal Cheesecake - "King of All Spaceheads" (Pathological, 1994)

Courtesy of a harsh noise-centric blog called Sickness Abounds.

    Hit it here:

    http://sickness-abounds.blogspot.com/2009/02/terminal-cheesecake-king-of-all.html

  • I know a fellow who spent some time in terminal cheesecake but I've never checked them out.

  • Papa Sprain - The Peel Session

As far as I know, this has never existed in digital form. FortDax sent me a tape he made from the radio when it was originally broadcast and I ripped it as a series of high-quality MP3s. An absolutely essential piece of UK post-rock history, featuring members of A.R. Kane and Butterfly Child. Hit it here:

    http://rapidshare.com/files/229316687/Papa_Sprain_Peel_Session.zip.html

It should also be on The Blackened Air soon.

There's rumoured to be an unreleased full-length PS album out there somewhere. If anyone has a copy in any format, please let me know ASAP.

  • Every Day Shines: UK Post-Rock Volume Four

My latest UK post-rock compilation, featuring Bark Psychosis, Disco Inferno, Hood, Amp, Moonshake, Flying Saucer Attack, The Hair & Skin Trading Company, Long Fin Killie, Papa Sprain, Butterfly Child, Piano Magic, Spoonfed Hybrid and Earwig.

This one puts less emphasis on electronica influences than previous volumes did, highlighting post-rock's place in a continuum of left-field British indie rock.

    Hit it here:

    http://rapidshare.com/files/230813353/UK_Post-Rock_Vol.zip.html

You can find the track-listings of the previous volumes on my old blog. Let me know if you want me to upload any of them.

  • holy crap

i have like been looking at this page all day and i am blown away. def that AMP track and Butterfly Child stuff, is freakn amazing!

  • More great stuff

FM Shades is one of my favourite sharity blogs and the mysterious Mr. Shades has really outdone himself by posting Popol Vuh's 1976 classic Letzte Tage - Letzte Nächte. This is a precursor to the Godspeed/Sigur Ros style of epic post-rock rather than the earlier British stuff but - what the heck - it's great! You should definitely pick up the Think Progressive 180g vinyl reissue, if you can find it. In the meantime, hit the download here:

    http://fm-shades.blogspot.com/2009/02/popol-vuh-letzte-tage-letzte-nachte.html

Totally Wired is fast becoming another of my favourite sharity blogs. The mysterious Ex Lion Tamer has done us the favour of posting a real pre-post-rock classic, the A.C. Marias' One Of Our Girls (Has Gone Missing). You can get it here:

    Oh lord...

"2. Please don't post "The Five EPs" by Disco Inferno as that's rumoured to be getting an official release later this year."
I sure as hell hope so! I mean, the FLACs I grabbed from What are good and all, but I'd love to actually buy the EPs... Preferably on vinyl :-)

  • I believe that the re-issue is going to be CD-only, unfortunately. I just have the original EPs on CD and my "Summer's Last Sound" has succumbed to CD-rot. They're rare as hell on wax. The only one I've ever laid eyes on is "Second Language".

Now, if you're a big DI fan, you'll be wanting to contribute to the Five Favourite Disco Inferno Songs thread.

Heh, I'm saddened to say that

I only have the EPs; I'm woefully unacquainted with their album material. Might see if I can find any of their CDs in Spillers, when I'm next in Cardiff...

  • To be honest, even if you'd heard the albums, you'd probably end up picking songs from the EPs for your top five. It's not that the albums aren't great, it's just that the EPs are SO great.

    Hear hear! 100% true.

A CD-only Five EPs is better than nothing, in my opinion.

  • UK Post-Rock Volume Four re-post

By popular request, I've re-uploaded my latest UKPR compilation.

    Here's the new link:

    papa sprain demos

  • These Papa Sprain demos are great! I'm going to say they're the band's first recording, pre-dating the Flying to Vegas EP. There's something a bit "learn-the-guitar-in-a-day" about a couple of the songs.

  • Now will someone please upload the legendary unreleased album?

  • UK Post-Rock Volume One

After getting some good feedback about the last UKPR compilation I posted here, I swore to go back and post all of the previous volumes here too. Well, I've finally got around to posting the first volume and you can get it here:

    http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=f41af07f23e4c3fe75a4fc82078ae6c8e04e75f6e8ebb871

    This is the track listing:

    1. Disco Inferno - "Summer's Last Sound"
    2. Butterfly Child - "Nymphs Sing the Blues"
    3. Insides - "Darling Effect"
    4. Laika - "Marimba Song"
    5. Moonshake - "Your Last Friend in This Town"
    6. Flying Saucer Attack - "Feedback Song"
    7. Bark Psychosis - "Street Scene"
    8. Scorn - "Silver Rain Fell"
    9. God - "Bloodstream"
    10. Main - "Reformation (Expansive)"

I'm hoping this will expand a few people's horizons beyond Disco Inferno and Bark Psychosis. Please feel free to use this thread in order to discuss what you hear.

More volumes to come in the future.

Oh and let me know if you have any trouble with the download.

  • Downloading...(dots moving)

I'm not listening to Disco Inferno since 2 years ago, i just remember that i have lots of dusty records on my closet. Boxes and boxes, i've been moving to much this last year.

Thanks to you all you sharing and caring people.

    Greetings.

    Papa Sprain Full-Length...

Regarding the mythical Papa Sprain full length, I recall reading a blurb about it in the Melody Maker way back in '92. From what I gathered, the whole project was a bust. Basically, Gary McKendrie submitted a tape to Rough Trade that contained nothing but grating feedback and noise. Rough Trade deemed this unacceptable and unreleasable, so McKendrie submitted a second tape, identical to the first save with the addition of him occasionally quoting from Joyce's "Ulysses". And that was the end of the affair, or, at least, the last I heard of any pending release. After the Rough Trade Singles Club 7" ("tech yes, etc."), nothing....
