Any useful tips for people wanting to travel? The best I can give is, if you want free accomodation, to join www.couchsurfing.com or www.hospitalityclub.org - the second being more reliable in my opinion.
BLEND IN AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Wear similar clothing, and try your best to immatate the local accent without looking stupid (if you speak the local language).
Unless you're there purely for touristy activities, in which case it would be fine to stand out if you want people to feel sympathy for you and possible assist.
The suggestion of the previous poster was good. Although maybe not to the extreme he said. Travelling is most interesting when you can stay with a local family or people you (get to) know there. Just be involved in the daily activities. If possible, learn some important expressions in the local language. Things like greetings, thank you, goodbye, I (don't) like/want ..., etc
