This is the group for people who enjoy music and don't see this site as a method of proving their dedication to one band.

Listening to music is not a competition!

Last.FM gathers a lot of stats on music usage to match you to similar artists. The byproduct is that it can find who is the most focused on one type of artist. This Top Fan stat doesn’t really affect Last FM in any way, it’s just a leftover result of a computer algorithm.

Some people see this as more than it is. They may be a fan of a particular band and they feel the Top Artist title proves to the world that they are the biggest fan of that artist. And to get to the top they’re willing to skew their last.fm profile to make it look like they listen to their band more than they do. Often by playing songs on repeat at night, when they’re not home, or with the mute on; it's ironic that any artist wouldn't consider their top fan somebody who plays their music with the mute on.

The affect this has on the last.fm community is hard to define. It doesn’t affect overall band popularity but it may match you up with somebody with a faked taste in music. At the very least somebody cooking their play count wastes server cycles that could better be served matching the rest of up to new music. Regardless of the problems the message of this group is clear.

Music isn’t a competition.

The Top Fans have become abused. "Top Fans" are doing themselves a disservice; if this site is used correctly you’ll find out there your narrow taste in music isn’t as narrow as you think. Soon the thought of being restricted to one artist will be unthinkable.

Join up now. You won’t get another pony but people will know that you’re not at this site to prove yourself to others, you’re here to enjoy music.

Music isn’t a competition. [4] Listen the music because you are knowing the discography of the artist is a thing but just listen for listen is ridiculous.I know two crazy who do this: they keep the pc turned on and playing when they aren't at home and stuff.Crazy things ._.

kennorth: Which is just freaking stupid because it doesn't help bands on the charts. It only drives the total playcount up. Artists' song charts and group charts as well as the total charts are made such that it counts only the number of users who have scrobbled a song/artist within a certain week, not how often they have scrobbled the song/artist. You can scrobble one and the same track 20,000 times a week and it won't change the charts one bit.

delete top fans and plays,im mostly here to discover new shit. I can find out 10 new bands in less than 5 minutes. I go to torrent and download them and thats it. But yea if i like a song ill put it in repeat and change it when i feel like.

Sometimes I have a few tracks from one artist on replay, but only because I like listening to them ._.

I'm a top listener of Vex Red, I didn't do it by 'skewing'. Good band, few little listeners, and I believe the album's now rare as....

This is a really good idea for a group. Just out of curiosity/suspicion, I looked at the plays for one of Sonic Youth's top listeners - the dude had supposedly been listening to music nonstop for days. Pathetic!

I don't think a lot of people do it to get top fan status - I know a lot of people who do those things to get their favorite bands higher up on the last.fm charts

A few weeks ago I saw a bunch of fake profiles as top artists of Banda Calypso I couldn't believe it. It's not as if they have a huge listenership here anyway. It had to be one goofball who did it because of the same join date. One listened to them 44 times, the next 43, and so on, and it was the only band they ever listened to. I guess there were about 15 of these fakes lol.

I spend like 90% of my time listening to the same band so it kinda annoys me that you make it sound like noone listens to bands that much. But I do like other stuff too. I acctually have more varied music tastes than a lot of people. However you're right about how stupid the people who put songs on repeat at night or on mute or whatever are.

idk, I'm a Top Fan of Kim Yoon Ah (e.g.), because there are only a few hundred fans of hers on last.fm, and when I get into a listening kick, I'll listen to her on repeat for a good part of a week (or longer). So she'll get like 400 plays in my weekly chart. Same goes for The Divine Comedy. I like using my last.fm profile to give some favourite lesser-known bands or artists greater exposure.
