The Throne
The Throne is a hip-hop duo consisting of JAY-Z and Kanye West which formed in 2010. The group has released two singles, “H.A.M.” and “Otis” and will release their debut album, Watch the Throne on 8 August 2011.

A lot of the hype has finally died down from Watch the Throne. After breaking records, producing opinions, and making me want to ride around vicariously in a torn up Maybach, Watch the Throne’s production is what stood out to me the most. Each track’s beat is truly unique. And I’m gonna be honest, if a song doesn’t have a good beat noticeable from the start of the song, I’m probably not gonna make it past the first 30 seconds- a song’s beat is what makes or breaks it for me. Production was carefully crafted thanks to- Swizz Beats, RZA, Lex Luger, Hit-Boy, Q-Tip, The Neptunes and No I.D. to name a few.

If you happen to take notice of the album credit’s, there you will find a plethora of information you wouldn’t have known otherwise. Did you know Kid Cudi is credited on 4 tracks on the album? Sure is. Did you know that LMFAO is credited for mixing some of the songs? Sure are.

Shawn Carter and Kanye West definitely got me on a lot of the lyrical content. When I’m listening to the album, there are certain lines that give me goose-bumps and force me to backtrack on the song just to hear the line again. Overall, I think Jay- Z held it down and kept it 100, Kanye didn’t impress me as much lyrically. The tracks on Watch the Throne may be seen as luxury rap, but when you listen closer, there are SO MANY references to philosophers like Caesar and Socrates, as well as religion and biblical context, which extend way beyond that of luxury rap. I decided I wanted to pull out some of the noteworthy lyrics from the album- just because.

No Church In The Wild

“Human beings in a mob/ What’s a mob to a king?/ What’s a king to a God?/ What’s a God to a non-believer who don’t believe in anything? /Will he make it out alive?/ No church in the wild.”

—Thought provoking, is it not? Frank Ocean on the vocals keepin it smooth. I love the whole feel of this song & the beat follows the theme of it. This song is deep and deserves a close listen because it explores religion & believing from a whole different level.

The Joy

“This beat deserves Hennessey, a bad bitch & a bag of weed; the Holy Trinity.”

—Boom. Yes, Yeezy did refer to alcohol, bad bitches and marijuana as his father, son & holy spirit (Holy Trinity)- get it how you live.

Murder To Excellence

“Giving you respect, I expect the same thing/ All-black everything, nigga you know my fresh code./ I’m out here fighting for you, don’t increase my stress load.”

Why I Love You

“Got a pistol under my pillow/ I’ve never been a deep sleeper.”

—ill punchline. This song is basically a fck you to the haters & a shout out to those that have been loyal.

Who Gon Stop Me

“No lies in my verses, please pardon all the curses/ Shit gotta come some way, fuck, when you’re growing up worthless/ Middle finger to my old life, special shoutout to my old head/ If it wasn’t for your advice, a nigga would have been so dead.”

—This is why Jay- Z is allowed to say he invented swag- he built success from the ground up. But real talk, who is gonna stop Yeezy & Hov? Nobody.
