I wish I'd seen Shindler's List. Instead, we rented 27 Dresses, (should I post this here, or under the Chick Flick thread?).

27 Dresses is a typical formula romantic comedy. They set it up so that the girl meets her intended mate, an at first she doesn't like him. He pursues her, he screws up, she screws up, they realize their folly and they end up together. Same old stuff, different movie name.

    1/5.

Although I never saw Cast Away, wasn't he on the island almost the entire movie? If you liked that part, 2/5 seems a bit unfair.

Ha I had to sit through that movie last week with my girlfriend. I figured it wouldn't be too bad, at least I would get to watch Katherine Heigl for an hour and a half. God, I was wrong...horrible movie.

    Charlie Wilson's War

Movies about politics and the inner workings of government are intriguing to me (though admittedly some of them are pretty inacurate). This is a great story based on real events about American covert operations to arm Afghanistan with weapons to defeat the invading Soviet army, although it is really more a story about the individuals that put the events in motion that would eventually lead to Afghanistan defeating the Russians. Some good performances from Tom Hanks and Philip Seymour Hoffman (not so much Julia Roberts but she's notthat bad.)

So yeah watch this movie if you get a chance.

    The Good Night

    4/5
I really liked this movie. It starts kind of slow and your interest builds. It's really mellow, until one scene that will catapult you out of your seat with suprise! Simon Pegg is fantastic as the aging musician!

    Here's a description from a YouTube page:
In THE GOOD NIGHT, dreaming is believing, as Gary (Martin Freeman) a once successful musician, struggles with his career and an inert relationship with his girlfriend Dora (Gwyneth Paltrow). As his work as a commercial jingle writer spirals into ever more degrading depths, his best friend and former band mate Paul (Simon Pegg) seems to find success at every turn. Gary is depressed and dejected until he meets Anna (Penelope Cruz). She is everything Gary wants sexually, artistically and intellectually--she is the girl of his dreams, literally. But Gary can only be with Anna in sleep which consequently sends him on a quest for more frequent slumber.

With the help of a new age guru named Mel, (Danny DeVito) Gary shuns reality for the comfort of his dreams even as the troubles of his waking life increase. Written and directed by Jake Paltrow. The film also stars Michael Gambon, Amber Sealey, Keith Allen and Finty Williams.

    Evan Almighty

Okay, admittedly, I didn't watch all of this, but watched most of it on HBO last night. It's not a horrible film, but there's not much to recommend it, either, other than Freeman and Carell. It's not funny, is a bit sappy in places, and has many plot holes.

  • saw "beaches" on my laptop. i was expecting to cry but didn't even get teary-eyed, i have a feeling it was because the pause every 10 minutes on youtube kept ruining the mood. i did however enjoy the movie.

    "The Bridge"
A documentary about suicides at San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. A film crew stayed at the bridge for a year and caught about six jumpers. Overall, 24 people jumped off that bridge in 2004. They did interviews with the families and friends of the jumpers and some survivors.
The various shots of the bridge were beautiful, and he film was insightful. I fell asleep though. Watching a bridge and listening to soft spoken memories of leapers' families is like watching paint dry. If this film had lasted three hours, I'd have jumped too!

  • saw "sweet november" on the telly today. story is based on Sara (played by charlize theron). she invites guys into her life each month then gets rid of them particularly because she doesn't want to get too involved because she knows she is dying.
so one november, she meeets this workaholic (keanu reeves), she eventually changes him bla blablabla they fall in love, he finds out she has cancer but he still wants to pursue her. she doesn't want to create any more further pain so ultimately she decides to leave him. there are cheesy and touching scenes throughout the movie.

it copped alot of bad reviews, i know the performance by keanu reeves was quite poor but i personally still liked the movie anyway. it's a film based on life and relationships. made me cry so that's good too. uh... 2 out of 5.

Hi, yesterday I saw The Incredible Shrinking Man and i like so much. The effects are very good despite being from 1957 (and with a low quantity of money inverted).

  • i just recently saw stardust on dvd, 3.5 out of 5. super-entertaining! wasn't a heavy fantasy film like lord of the rings but it was very likeable and charming. this scene with robert de niro cracked me up hahaha

  • planet of the apes. the original. classic.on a scale of 10,i give it a 10.

love is all you need! is there anybody alive out there?

    No chick flicks this week...

We rented the first disc (out of 6?), of the HBO series, "Band of Brothers". It's about group of paratroopers that drop into Normandy on D-Day. I've seen snippets of it on television re-runs. It's pretty good, but it's a big commitment to watch them all!

    First disc: 3.5/5

    My last five movies:

Tron: I didn't like it. It has an interesting approach, but treated about very boring form. 3/10
The Day the Earth Stood Still. 8/10
    La haine. 7/10
    High Noon. 8/10
    Paths of Glory. 9/10

  • I just saw Carlitos' Way, and i rate it a 3 and a half out of 5 - it's a really cool gangster film. strangely enough i like it better than scarface, everyone else loves scarface though. i remember looking at the cover of this dvd and being frustrated at borrowin an al pacino movie. anyway, i used to hate him alot, but after seeing this film he is pretty cool in my books.

I saw it a few days ago and I like, very good film (as good as Sean Penn's hairstyle). Did you see Twelve angry men?

By the way, I've seen too many films recently, like:

Le Voyage dans la lune: from 1902, the first science-fiction movie. Interesting.
Safety Last!: another silent movie, a good comedy.
El orfanato: from my country. I like it, but not very original, it remainds me other films like Los otros (The Others), The Changeling, etc.
Day of the Dead: the third from the trilogy of George Romero. That type of movies is good when you are a child, but now... these zombies don't scare a sheep! And the social critic is so lukewarm and "stereotyped".
Triumph des Willens: a documental by Leni Riefenstahl entrusted by Hitler. Very interesting.
Control: about Joy Division's vocalist Ian Curtis, i saw it with subtitles, such a good film.
