what is non-classical music ?

the term 'non-classical' does not mean "everything else than classical (jazz,
pop, rock, folk, etc.)". non-classical is the range of art music which has
overcome the classical boundaries (compare to non-classical mechanics or
non-classical logics). in this sense, non-classical music begins with 19th century
impressionism and ends with contemporary avant-garde music. in some sense, it's
20th century "classical" music but without the true contempory classical composers.

@Nevermoreraven: "And I realize that it may not really be 'Rock' in a certain sense". you're right, that is what i actually wanted to point out. but is 'rock' a well-defined ensemble of musical styles? maybe the reason Popol Vuh's music has been considered 'rock' is, like many others, that the discourse about their music took place in the rock community, not, say, in the 'classical' scene. to a high degree, what people consider X is a matter of the social discourse that includes X. as far as i know, it was Virgin Records who popularized "krautrock" (a 1973 track title of Faust) as a genre identifier for *german* rock (not confined to any style, and not necessarily experimental). personally, in the early 70s when i lived in germany, "krautrock" was a weird term referring to the Puhdys, for example, definitely not to Guru Guru or Kraftwerk.

Non-classical music is a construct of elitist pricks like Alec Hendrix, striving so overly hard to fit everything into a nonsensical label that they forget why they're listening to the music in the first place. It's terribly ironic that this Alec Hendrix hypocrite dedicates a large amount of his Lastfm posts to criticizing musical tags and claiming that all pigeonholing of music is ignorant. He is a self-proclaimed genius that cannot decide whether he wants to classify music or not; in other words, he is a complete idiot. However, there is a group you can join called Anti-SirAlecHendrix; Its motives are quite noble. 1/10 for this Alec Hendrix idiot.

compare with Popol Vuh's Ah!, mistakenly considered "krautrock". but in fact, isn't it a kind of 'contemporary classical' music?

If alban berg is a connected artist wouldnt it make sense to connect the rest of shoenberg's school? Even some of stravinsky's later compositions might fit. Dunno thought not entirely clear with what you mean by non-classical. Would love to be enlightened.
