    12.02.02 FEBRUARY
Hey folks! Sorry I'm a day late, had some ISP issues here.
For new members, here’s how it goes. Below there are some themes and a list of pairs. Pick a theme, find your name, and make a mix for the person you're matched with. You can discuss the theme beforehand with your partner or not, it’s up to you. Easy as that.

Please read the Important Post in the Forum if you want a refresher on technical stuff and membership policy. (http://www.last.fm/group/The+Monthly+Mixtape/forum/45288/_/221537 )

Every month, we have four optional theme categories. Categories stay the same, themes change monthly. Consider them suggestions if you don't know what kind of music to put together. Interpret the theme however you like. But most of the longtime members are fanatically creative in applying a theme.

    Share your theme ideas!

This month’s Alchemist is muzikizum, who stunningly posted a mix on Jan. 2, less than 24 hours after themes were posted. What’s more, he combined the CREATE A STORY theme with one that had been discussed in the forums a while back, BIBLE. Muze, true to his inner mixtaping alchemist, or his contrarian leanings, did this after the BIBLE took a thumping in the forums. No love for religiosity mixes over there - either that or everyone assumed BIBLE MIX = gospel / hymns & their library was sorely lacking. Jesus wept; Muzikizum mixed. Well done.

    Our themes this month are:
    1. "Elementary" (is this too easy?) - (76% of the vote) -
    .....PICK AN EMOTION.....
    2. "Elixir of Life" (a.k.a. immortal themes that will not die) - (tie) -
.....GEOGRAPHY..... tied with .....BOY / GIRL NAMES..... so take yer pick
    3. "Hermetic Order of Alchemists, no. 2: muzikizum - (67%)
.....TRAVELOGUE..... Songs with places, landmarks, etc. in the title
    4. "Philosopher's Stone" (more challenging) - (56%)
.....LAST THINGS FIRST..... Last word in title of track 1 = first word in title of track 2. Wraparound bonus points if the last word in the last track = the first word in the first track.

And then there were 29. We lost several members in January, some of whom I will personally miss. Am I presiding over the groups' dissolution? Is it all too much? Perhaps. Some said they had no more time to mix. Yeah, being a grownup sucks. Some left silently. Others got booted after not showing up at all in January. Tell you what, when it's down to just us four (you know who you are), I'll post one last discussion for throwing mixes into.

The gyre widens. The center cannot hold.

For you visual types looking for inspiration, here's the picture of the month

    Now, for the pairings:
    01010100- crazystargrl
    blackadder_de - ponchosqueal

    The Return

I'm back after a two year hiatus.
Yes it sucks to grow up. I turned 30 this year.
That just mean you have to work to make time for the things you enjoy because if you don't you'll find that you're not having much fun doing all the grown up things.

I joined too late for a partner this month so here's a mix for everybody.
It should be real easy to see which theme I chose.

    Good to be back :)

i went with the Philosopher's Stone challenge again, because i had a blast with it last time around.

anyone who's done this one before knows it's always a crapshoot, you never know what you're going to end up with and it's impossible to plan out where it will lead you. it took me four tries, but i finally nailed it. i wasn't able to loop it all the way around, but i was able to keep my usual formula as well as put together a mix i think Karlientjeuh will actually enjoy. and not to brag, but the flow of this one is remarkable, and would be remarkable for any mix, let alone one with such tight guidelines.

    so enjoy!

    Here We Go (Again)
    01 Ulver: Fuck Fast
02 The Flashbulb: Fast Forward to Here
    03 Samples: Here We Go
    04 Jonsi: Go Do
05 Animals as Leaders: Do Not Go Gently
06 The Mercury Program: Gently Turned On Your Head
07 Nine Inch Nails: Head Down
08 Radiohead: Down is the New Up
09 The Fiery Furnaces: Up in the North
10 Fionn Regan: North Star Lover
11 Bright Eyes: Lover I Don't Have to Love
12 Cold Cave: Love Comes Close
13 The Cure: Close to Me
14 Brand New: Me vs. Madonna vs. Elvis

    TRT: 54:15

listen to the noise i make and leave me a comment about it.

  • This is my mix for Tom_Meade.

I went with the 'Last Thing First' theme, and much to my surprise this thing turned out pretty well. You'd think random songs tied only by their names would have some glaring missteps, but there's a flow that, while not always perfect, works throughout the thing, while bouncing all over the place. I'm pretty happy about it.

The fun of this thing was following down your path, like those Choose Your Own Adventure books back in the 80s, that would either continue your story or drop you down a pit, depending on what choice you made. Or for those for whom that particular cultural reference misses, like doing a maze and hitting a dead end because it wasn't immediately obvious. You make one choice, go three songs down the line and hit a wall -- and you have to backtrack to try to create a new path. That didn't happen as often as I originally feared it would, but it did and it was not fun.

And then when you get it all straightened out, other issues will rear their ugly heads. There was a file which seemed to be a bad rip, and I couldn't track down a clean copy. Of course, this was smack in the middle of the set, so it threatened to derail everything...until I decided to clip some of it and throw in a fade out. Yes, I know, cheating, but I don't care. Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do to get it done.

Anyway, hope y'all enjoy, and lookin forward to your mixes!

Hi all! I haven’t made a mixtape for yonks, so I chose the Last Things First theme, in hopes it would make it a bit easier. Yeah. This theme is crazy-making, yet addicting. I had to redo it many times over, and this is the attempt that I thought had the most coherency, even though I couldn’t get past ten songs.

    Here’s my mix, for rivermint:

    Ouroboros

    1. Woven Hand - Truly Golden
    2. The Low Anthem - Golden Cattle
    3. Jay Munly - Cattle, I Will Hang
    4. Scott H Biram - Hang Your Head And Cry
    5. Grayson Capps - Cry Me One Tear
    6. Lucero - Tears Don’t Matter Much
    7. Sharon van Etten - Much More Than That
    8. Slim Cessna’s Auto Club - That Fierce Cow Is Common Sense In A Country Dress
    9. Jason Isbell - Dress Blues
    10. Cotton Jones - Blues From A Nest

Head And The Heart - Heaven Go Easy on Me
Barry Louis Polisar - Me and You
Frank Sinatra - You Make Me Feel So Young
    Enjoy :)

I was very impressed with Jewce's continuous loop in 9 tracks.
So of course I looked for a continuous loop in fewer tracks...
and came up with this in 3:
Stars - What I'm Trying To Say
Weezer - Say It Ain't So
    Pink - So What

or I guess you could cheat and do it in 1:
Hall & Oates - One On One

OR really cheat with a one-word-one-track mix - don't do this unless you haven't heard from your mix partner yet :)

Red Hot Chili Peppers - If

Nice work this month, folks. Keep mixing !
