Do you aspire to be the coolest kid in existence? If so, join now.
So you've all found the best thing in the world, well apart from last.fm itself. Of course by this, I mean www.mainstream.vincentahrend.com
And as obscure and alternative as you think you are, you have suddenly become extremely disillusioned at how mainstream you are.
So what next? Well if you're suffering from pangs of guilt every time you get close to listening to artists such as The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, Blur, and Belle and Sebastian, or if you're verging towards the unhealthy OCD-esque version of this infliction, The Shins, Of Montreal, Cat Power, Kate Bush or Architecture In Helsinki, then this group is for you!
You may join the impendingly infamous Mainstream Challenge at your peril.
Here are the rules:
Listen to the most obscure artists in your music library for a whole week, and compete against someone who is equally pedantic in a race to get the lowest mainstream score in your weekly charts. You must listen to at least 30 artists and preferably, you must scrobble at least one song by each artist. There are no more rules as yet.
The winner doesn't get a prize as such but, the prize is surely pride. The chance to pick up your ego. And also, if you feel the need, to continue the challenge in order to get your overall charts down - this is the ultimate goal.
So if this sounds like you then join RIGHT NOW before the cool kids catch on - you can be super cool. This will be coming to a 'music press' near you soon, surely - but not so much so that my choice obscure artists become popularised, because after all, I can think of nothing worse.
This is what happens from here on in: every time the weekly charts get updated, I'm going to expect you all to be on here posting your ridiculously low mainstream scores! Or else... get out. Get your most obscure artists out from your attic and get them ready to start playing from Sunday at 12pm.
PS A bit of post-irony never went amiss. You shouldn't take this seriously enough to jeopardise your pride, because after all, there is nothing wrong with listening to artists who others like. Although clearly it's not going to make you feel great about yourself.
