Do you aspire to be the coolest kid in existence? If so, join now.

So you've all found the best thing in the world, well apart from last.fm itself. Of course by this, I mean www.mainstream.vincentahrend.com

And as obscure and alternative as you think you are, you have suddenly become extremely disillusioned at how mainstream you are.

So what next? Well if you're suffering from pangs of guilt every time you get close to listening to artists such as The Beatles, Bob Dylan, The Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, Blur, and Belle and Sebastian, or if you're verging towards the unhealthy OCD-esque version of this infliction, The Shins, Of Montreal, Cat Power, Kate Bush or Architecture In Helsinki, then this group is for you!

You may join the impendingly infamous Mainstream Challenge at your peril.

Here are the rules:
Listen to the most obscure artists in your music library for a whole week, and compete against someone who is equally pedantic in a race to get the lowest mainstream score in your weekly charts. You must listen to at least 30 artists and preferably, you must scrobble at least one song by each artist. There are no more rules as yet.

The winner doesn't get a prize as such but, the prize is surely pride. The chance to pick up your ego. And also, if you feel the need, to continue the challenge in order to get your overall charts down - this is the ultimate goal.

So if this sounds like you then join RIGHT NOW before the cool kids catch on - you can be super cool. This will be coming to a 'music press' near you soon, surely - but not so much so that my choice obscure artists become popularised, because after all, I can think of nothing worse.

This is what happens from here on in: every time the weekly charts get updated, I'm going to expect you all to be on here posting your ridiculously low mainstream scores! Or else... get out. Get your most obscure artists out from your attic and get them ready to start playing from Sunday at 12pm.

PS A bit of post-irony never went amiss. You shouldn't take this seriously enough to jeopardise your pride, because after all, there is nothing wrong with listening to artists who others like. Although clearly it's not going to make you feel great about yourself.

@rectifyingcalm it matters because, how people will listen to music that appeals to them if they just listen music that are on tv, radio and mtv, those medias dont show a huge amount of sub-genres, genres and artists. A example if a person would really love or if heard, but he has not heard yet because he just look on tv and radio, this mean that he dont listen music that he really like, just the music that he like from the tv, and radio list, that can be really far from the type of music that he would really like if he discovered artists and type of music that are not om media. That is why most of the world people listen the sames thinks, people have different tastes but they listen to the same thing because they dont know anything outside the tv list and have to choose from this list of artists (that is very small)

For a group whose aim is to listen to obscure music I find it hilarious that the two highest artists are The Beatles and Radiohead. However it pleases me immensely to see Pixies so high up.

I'm kind of curious as to what it matters how mainstream an individual is. People listen to music that appeals to them, and engineering charts in some facade of superiority-via-obscurity seems to fly in the face of what's awesome about music. Do individuals just have so little depth to their personality that they feel they can define themselves only by their listening habits? That seems to unnec

I'm back. It's back. But I've lost all my obscure stuff from my PC because it decided to die on me whilst I was on holiday. Please continue, however. Good work, proteges.
