Beschreibung:
Jazz music took an amazing spiritual odyssey beginning at the end of the 1960s.

“During the year 1957, I experienced, by the grace of God, a spiritual awakening which has guided me to a richer, fuller, more productive life. At that time, in gratitude, I humbly asked to be given the means and privilege to make others happy through music. I feel this has been granted through His grace. ALL PRAISE TO GOD.”
-John William Coltrane, 1965

In 1965, John Coltrane, established at that time as one of the most respected names in contemporary jazz, released an album called A Love Supreme. It was conceived as a four-part devotional ode expressing not only Coltrane's love for God, but also serving as a bellwether of stylistic changes Coltrane was making in his music in order to not only use the music as a catalyst for the message, but to make them indistinguishable--to musically envelop the listener in God's love.

Over the next several years following Coltrane's death in 1967, many were profoundly influenced by the spiritual and musical direction of this record. A select few followed in its footsteps and created a jazz genre now known as "spiritual jazz" and sometimes "kozmigroov." Elements of it became associated with black nationalist movements and pan-African thought, spawning tiny independent record labels for distribution of both music and ideals.

...but you don't need to know any of that to feel the power of this music. Coltrane and many of his followers were far more successful in their goals than history presently remembers. Come listen with us and help change this.

@beezer I always feel like I'm missing something with chene noir, like the theatrical elements and the music were totally interreliant but one is missing when you listen. and well said @russellchap...

Music is a universal language and as such can unite different people. It's also a universal energy uniting the individual with the cosmic. This is why music is spiritual.

this music makes me feel spiritual, to be sure, but i do not believe in any deity. but if this music gave you god, and god makes you happy, then i support you.

I don't think you need to be religious for this style of music to "work" for you. Personally, I'm an atheist, but believe that "God" is something inside of us. The feelings associated with religious enlightenment are legitimate, and it's understandable to associate it with some deity of some kind. But as an atheist, I feel God with this music.

Hmmm. I was looking at it as a Joe Bonner fan mainly and thinking that it might not be too straight. It also seems quite scarce on LP.

@beezer it's solid. the grubbs brothers are great players, definitely influenced by trane (both of them), and it's produced by cuscuna. it's not the most innovative--that one is their last as the visitors, from 76, and they had just started to get into the spiritual jazz thing, doing standards up until like 72--but it's good playing. I like their earlier sides too.
