Best Albums Of 2009

  • I can agree with Antlers - Hospice being a disappointment. Not like I really went into it with any huge expectations, but every time a friend of mine was like "OMG THIS ALBUM" I'd try listening to it again, only to get bored within the first minute of each song. Sigh.

I have Baroness and, same problem -- friend says "top ten of 09, no question". I say, "Okay, intro track. Boring. Skip. Oh, second track -- chuggachug. I guess this is metal." And then I remember I am rarely in the mood to listen to metal. It's a shame, really.

Only because I remember this being an issue with The XX as well, I guess I'll mention them as a disappointment. I really think it's a mood thing, though. I am giving them another try as we speak. We'll see what happens.

Also, wtf, Say Anything has a new album??????? And it's actually good? Questionable but believable.

  • Okay, since I'm noticing quite a few of these, I feel like I should mention them.

List of albums other people are mentioning right now that I felt were really good but never felt like listening to*:

    St. Vincent - Actor
Flaming Lips - Embryonic (toooo long)
    Girls - Album
Holopaw - Oh, Glory. Oh, Wilderness.
Japandroids - Post-Nothing (i was actually in love with this album for a month and just haven't put it on again since)
Black Moth Super Rainbow - Eating Us (same as above)
Future of the Left - Travels with myself and another
    Sun Araw - Heavy Deeds
Volcano Choir - Unmap (same as above)
    Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport
    Converge - Axe To Fall
Pissed Jeans - King Of Jeans
    Russian Circles - Geneva
Nosaj Thing - Drift (listened to this again yesterday and regretted not mentioning it here)
The Field - Yesterday and Today
    Lightning Bolt - Earthly Delights
    Nurses - Apple's Acre
A Sunny Day In Glasgow - Ashes Grammar (too long, but only in terms of the number of tracks. since, i mean, they mostly transition into each other anyway, you know?)
Wavves - Wavvves (listened to this a lottt in the spring and just really grew to dislike it on repeat listens after a month of not listening to it.)

*a.k.a. "if I made a top 50, these would prob all be on it" or "I listened to these albums six times or less so they were way far down in the iTunes smart playlist I made for 2009"

  • And while I'm in the spirit of overdoing it, here's a list of albums from the rest of the decade that I wish were released this year because I continued to listen to them extensively (or I only discovered them this year):

Grouper - Dragging A Dead Deer Up A Hill (and a lot of her other stuff. I would usually listen to Cover The Windows And The Walls and Wide during the same stretch of time as this album.)
Storm And Stress - Under Thunder And Fluorescent Light (I am so glad Bradford Cox publicly professed his love for this album. Made me feel less crazy for enjoying it so much.)
    Women - S/T
Panda Bear - Person Pitch, Young Prayer
Animal Collective - (really, everything, but especially acoustic bootlegs from 2004 and bootlegs from this year.)
The Russian Futurists - Let's Get Ready To Crumble
    Jane - Berserker
Titus Andronicus - The Airing Of Grievances
Deerhunter - Cryptograms, Weird Era Cont (haven't listened to Microcastle since like May, though. Curious...)
Gang Gang Dance - Saint Dymphna
    Nodzzz - S/T
    Flying Lotus - Los Angeles

Note: I didn't make a list last year, but I feel like the albums released in 2008 that are on this list wouldn't have been on that one, because I discovered them or only began to fully appreciate them this year. Exceptions are probably Weird Era Cont, Nodzzz, and Women -- and I don't think I even started listening to the latter two until October or November anyway.

  • Count Drinky a.k.a Diversal's Top Ten

  • countdrinkula, you aren't the only one who did this, so don't take it personally, but --

seriously, dudes, you can't think of just albums that were actually released in 2009? i want everyone who listed Toro Y Moi and/or Surfer Blood to replace them with albums that were RELEASED THIS YEAR

might i recommend the new ECSTATIC SUNSHINE that seemily no one knows about? probably bc i haven't posted it yet... oh well. tshillary.blogspot.com seems to have been set up strictly for that purpose.

and yes this post was more of an excuse to give you guys a heads up on that record b4 i post it on stratosphering the blog than was a legitimate attack against people who listed 2010 leaks. LAST.FM GROUP BONUS

but srsly get those Causers and Astrocoasts outta here. They both won't be released until Feb so the internet has not even "officially" heard them yet

I'm not being original, but here is my top ten :

    LP :

1 - Cymbals Eat Guitars - Why There Are Mountains
    2 - Girls - Album
    3 - Atlas Sound - Logos
    4 - Dälek - Gutter Tactics
    5 - Sonic Youth - The Eternal
    6 - Peter Doherty - Grace/Wastelands
7 - Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillon
    8 - Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue
9 - Beat Assailant - Rhyme Space Continuum
    10 - Wavves - Wavvves / Antipop Consortium - Fluorescent Black

    EP :

    No Age - Losing Feeling
    Pelican - Ephemeral

  • Gbacardi07 a dit :
I love their early releases and would agree that they are a bit more ambitious. However, I think Baroness were maybe trying to prove themselves more on those records and now that they are an established force they are feeling more comfortable with what they are doing.

    I feel ya.

    You feel me? Really? Ha!

You're probably right (I mean, I feel ya too), but the fact is that their first releases were absolutely excellent and imo The Blue Album has some weak parts, especially the guitar work, terrible on some songs (both Bullhead's...).

    ohempyrean a dit :
Replace it by Lucky Dragons - Dream Island Laughing Language

    aww that's '08 again. but AMAZING '08.

Ginar & Patrick... so much violence in your words.

Haha. You know what? I abandon; totally passed through 2K9, not able to give you a decent list.

    volcano choir - unmap
    the xx - the xx
zomby -one foot ahead of the other

    The only order is alphabetical.

Also, anything my friend Anders Nils wrote this year.

  • I don't think bromst is getting enough love, easily my favorite album this year.

    bromst - dan deacon
    post-nothing - japandroids

Is it too early to say Surfer Blood? Everyone has that already right?

Honorable Mention: Antlers, Cymbals Eat Guitars, The Drums... maybe Real Estate??? (that first track just deserves mention)

Also: Woods, Dirty Projectors and Black Lips deserve some love. Although I think that these bands have made better albums in the past, I only started really loving them this year...

    ...Fuck AC and Grizzly Bear
