  • Good lists so far. However, while I love Tobacco's Fucked up Friends, it was in 2008.

EDIT: I forgot my 3rd favorite album of the year, believe it or not. The amendment has been made.

Top three of the year are labeled, the rest are in no particular order whatsoever. They could be, but I don't have the hours that would be needed for me to decide and undecide countless times:

    Kylesa - Static Tensions
    Converge - Axe To Fall
Pulling Teeth - Paranoid Delusions/Paradise Illusions
    Cobalt - Gin
The Thermals - Now We Can See
    Mount Eerie - Wind's Poem
Sunn O))) - Monoliths and Dimensions
    3) Pissed Jeans - King of Jeans
    2) Mastodon - Crack The Skye
    1) Baroness - Blue Record

some records not in my top 10, but still got heavy listening on my part:
    DOOM - Born Like This
    Dan Deacon - Bromst
    Why? - Eskimo Snow
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
    Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
    Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport
Black Moth Super Rainbow - Eating Us
    Russian Circles - Geneva
    Behemoth - Evangelion

Haha. Maths is for nerds, but I accept this rectification. Replace it by Lucky Dragons - Dream Island Laughing Language, or Mary Ann Hobbs - Wild Angels (is Dubstep gorgeous?)

  • copy/pasted the list I posted a few days ago on Collected Animals:

(when I post it on the blog maybe it'll be in order)

    obv: Anml C, Drty P, Blck D, Atls S, Dan D, Grzl B

    slightly less obv:

    Real Estate - S/T
Eric Copeland - Alien In A Garbage Dump
    M. Pyres - Cast Off / Cold Months
Here We Go Magic - S/T
    Ganglians - Monster Head Room
    Inverness - Forest Fortress
    Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue
    Bygones - by-

maybes (fond, but not in love):

    Woods - Songs Of Shame
    Ilyas Ahmed - Goner
    Emeralds - What Happened
    Oneohtrix Point Never - Rifts
Cymbals Eat Guitars - Why There Are Mountains
    Hermit Thrushes - Slight Fountain
    Wet Hair - Dream
    Mount Eerie - Wind's Poem
    Magik Markers - Balf Quarry
    Lightning Bolt - Earthly Delights
    Thee Oh Sees - Help
    Ducktails - S/T

listened to a lot way back when but haven't been in the mood for in the past several months and wouldn't have thought to mention it if it weren't for other people's lists or my last.fm and itunes play counts: Wavves, Why?, Hey!Tonal, Neon Indian, Akron/Family, Health, Sunset Rubdown, Cold Cave, Vivian Girls, White Denim, Pterodactyl

  • here are the albums i'll think of whenever i think of 2009. not really any order, different degrees of 'favorite'.

Emeralds - What Happened (this album was a milestone in my appreciation of sound/music)
Tim Hecker - An Imaginary Country (again, this and emeralds opened a whole new world of music to me)
Passion Pit - Manners (Folds in Your Hands is my song of the year)
Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest (i chugged haterrade on this for so long... but one day it just revealed itself to me, like the ugly girl taking off her glasses and letting down her hair for the first time. deserved all the hype IMO)
Nosaj Thing - Drift (flying lotus absolutely blew my mind last year, but he didn't release anything officially this year, but this guy carried the torch for him through '09 just fine)
Here We Go Magic - s/t (definitely my sleeper fav of '09. such an unassuming little record that i played the shit out of without even realizing until late in the game)
Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue (wasn't a huge fan of his older records at all, and thought this was too forced of a style change at first... but it grew on me hard)
Thrice - Beggars (totally thought i had outgrown these guys, especially after the weak 'experimental' phase with their 4 element EPs. checked this out hesitantly and discovered a warm and intimate, yet raw record. like finding out your friend from HS who went off to some weird college is still a great dude.)
Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca (i have to admit that i really can't stand any of their previous records, but watching them play these songs live on a gorgeous, warm summer night in downtown Chicago ignited something within. another overhyped album that deserves to be overhyped IMO)

some others that had a lesser impact but i still played a good bit:

Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (was there anyone not bumping this?)
Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavvy (see above)
Atlas Sound - Logos (this was like my favorite record of all time for about a week and i've barely touched it since. still great though)
White Rainbow - New Clouds (if this had been released earlier and i'd had more time with it, it probs would have cracked the above list)
Black Dice - Repo (mostly because it got me into older BD, but i always threw this album on when i was super wasted for some reason)
The Dear Hunter - Act III: Life And Death (not really my style of music at this point in my life, but they're my friends and some of the best people and i always have to show love for what they do)
The Pains of Being Pure At Heart - The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (every song on this album could have been a single. it was like the twee version of FutureSex/LoveSounds)
Air France - No Way Down (too short and fleeting to make a huge impact, but damn these are some great tracks, esp. No Excuses)
Woods - Songs Of Shame (i crapped on the vast majority of lo-fi garbage that got huge this year, but Woods were the one of the extreme few who i thought nailed it and used the method correctly.)
Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport (i have to respect FB for expanding their pallet, but honestly, i missed the distortion and screams. still a great album though)

looking through this list, i realize that it's actually sort of unrepresentative of my phases in taste that came and went throughout the year. mostly i'll remember 2009 as the year i moved away from guitars and drums and towards drones and beats.

    1) Baroness - Blue Album

This particular album could be my greatest disappointment...

Really? Why so? I am interested as to your reasons.

    Well, it's a bit exagerated.
The Red Album and their earliest releases were rough but extremely ambitious.
The Blue Album is tight but less hazardous; I mean, this is a great piece, but I've been bored with part of this album.

I love their early releases and would agree that they are a bit more ambitious. However, I think Baroness were maybe trying to prove themselves more on those records and now that they are an established force they are feeling more comfortable with what they are doing.

    I feel ya.
