    Fugazi

    Pretty much!

  • I had a really really good friend my sophomore year in high school. Her favourite band was Heavens To Betsy. Needless to say, H2B is in my top favourites of all time. Enough to emphatically buy out of print vinyls for ridiculously large sums of money that I don't have.

That and I just fell in love with the message all riot grrrls have.

And if you don't like Hole then FUUUUUUUUUCK yoooooooouuuuuuuu

    Doll Steak/Test Meat

We Don't Know So We Wait Till Tomorrow
  • The first band I was obsessed with was Nirvana when I was 13. Doing some research I met Hole, I liked it, and looked for more female-based bands of the 90s. At 15 I would listen to Bikini Kill all day... Then it stopped. Feminist expressionism was important to me back then, and it would affect my musical choices, now I care more about melody and the music itself despite politics. I know all riot grrl hymns by heart though. It was fun, but I had to grow up.

  • Punk+Feminism=pretty obvious conclusion in the Riot movement. So, I guess other related interests kind of fused together... or something

I went to a Beat Happening show in Minneapolis and they had a copy of the Bikini Kill activity book zine. I started trading my zine Holy Titclamps zines with Kathleen and got the BK demo tape and traded Girl Germs with Allison.

I've always been a strong supporter of Femenism and riot grrrl movements are pretty cool. Girls armed with guitars usually end up making pretty awesome music, too. =P

The raw power and emotions of the music and lyrics from females... It was great to see equality, and not just the guys out there making some noise. I'm a huge fan of female vocals, so that's another big reason...

Beeing and active feminist and Sonic Youth fan, the move to Free Kitten and over that to Bikini Kill and such felt natural. Just love it.

  • Uh yeah... mostly moved from liking Mudhoney and grunge/math bands that seemed to mock masculinity to Nirvana and related K records bands that seemed to be living an alternative of it out. Queer people making tuff music. Bikini Kill is my Sex Pistols.

  • i'm a homo, i don't think it's a prerequisite for listening to riotgrrl but it certainly gave me empathy for what they were doing. it was/is great to see "girls" attacking societal ideology with rage and anger or expressing their sexuality without becoming passive wank objects for white middle class hetro males.

    I'm an Anarchist

Every Anarchist is necessarily a feminist. Patriarchy, like all forms of hierarchy, must be abolished.

Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History. I need a riot grrrl.

    Viva la revolucion!

Don't patronize. Just because your tastes changed doesn't mean that riot grrrl is immature.
