    Oblivion

I read the hype, I bought the game. I had played the previous game on the xbox but gave up due to the terrible AI. PC version however, mods can be downloaded, and all the reviews I read, wow!

Please someone tell me why oblivion is so good. I went off exploring, and an hour later I was somewhere in the mountains with nothing to do. I tried doing the main quest, but got trashed. I tried being a magic user, but the hotkey system is terrible so swapping spells in tiresome and annoying. I started a new character, but by that stage I had enough. I need someone to tell me why it’s such a good game before I just sell the game to some unsuspected gamer

You have something to do right from the beginning...
THAT is one of the advancements to morrowind... in morrowind you were sent out with nothing to do.

In Oblivion you have the mainquest from the start on...
When you wander around the (huuuge) world you find a lot of cleverly constructed dungeons...
you can use the map to travel to one of the towns directly...
You'll find a lot of quests in the towns...
you can join one of the guilds...

Kill an innocent person: Netxt time you sleep, you'll be invited by the dark brotherhood
Make yourself liked by some beggar: He'll tell you about the grey fox, leader of the thieves guild...
For the fighter's guild or the magic guild you just have to visit one of the guild houses...
    et cetera, et cetera!!!!
The Hotkey system is very easy... just put a spell or weapon or potion or whatever into the wheel and the particular number-key will use it, equip it, cast it...
You'll have to guess what spell you'll need most and put that active in the first place...
Just going out exploring is not all...
    speak to people...
before trying the main quest you'll have to gain experience...

    whatever...
    it's a good game...

Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't say that the map is that huge. Being able to instant travel to the main cities from the start makes it seem much smaller. In WoW, you have to walk everywhere first (completing quests along the way of course), and even then you have to secure a flight path, giving the impression of exploration.

Something else is the lack of voice actors. To be fair there is a lot of dialog, but after hearing the same voices in every place you get to starts to get annoying. The mage guild quests weren't too bad, and I got so far as completing all the surrounding mage guild quests and securing all the recommendations. Staffs seem pretty useless, they run out of energy so quickly and they don’t actually do any damage. This is a shame as a big deal is made out of a personal staff being made for you in the mages guild.

I stick by not liking the hotkey system. You have to remember what spell is which key, which is constantly changing with new spells being learnt. WoW and guild wars naturally also uses the hotkey system, but also shows the spells at the bottom of the screen which is really useful. This allows smoother play. Oblivion looses out on a feel for real time. I was running away from some bad guys who were right behind me. I got to a locked door, then casually unlocked it as time “froze”. Same goes with choosing spells, items etc, making the game really slow

Maybe the game just isn’t for me :(

You just need to not screw around in the beggining of this game. Don't go exploring until you've got everything ready for the amulet of kings.

  • What can I tell about oblivion? hmmm. definitely it's worst than morrowind :D

  • Game is good but it gets boring after a while.Because all dungeons, caves etc. look same.
I didn't like the ending of the game.We did everything prince got the credit (except the part he turned to a big giant statue:)).

  • Mods extend and increase the game's playtime.

I've played it halfway through until it got too difficult for me and too frustrating to die every 5 minutes.
I really couldn't get into it from the start, though. Like..identify with the characters, etc.

I also missed any dialogue options. Most of the time it just felt like an ego-shooter without shooting. :/
And for that I'd prefer Dark Messiah.

    Oblivion?
It is a good game because you have much freedom. And how can you be trashed in the main quest, the main quest is much to easy, I have done the main quest in one day =/, just always follow the green or red arrow in your compas xD!!!
And idd, oblivion is much more fun when you are a warrior.

    ...
Morrowind is much better. If you follow the story and the main quest, morrowind is one of the most addictive games I have ever played!!! But If you play morrowind for fighting and stuff... You are at the wrong adress, Morrowind is more following the story and solving stuff and searching and exploring.

On a second opinion, months following my firstanalysis of this game, and playing it numerous times, I've decided the only RPG ever worth playing that is not an MMO is Final Fantasy.

    Freedom, is GREAT.
So much freedom in a role playing game is not so great.
Sand box style gaming just doesn't work for RPG's, I think. It works for games like Grand Theft Auto and the less exciting Crackdown because the stories aren't overly complex, there isn't this incredible array of things to discover, you just go where you want to and fire a gun. Oblivion just gives too much freedom to the player in a place where restriction is necessary for satisfaction.

Just my two cents. I will how ever not go to the extent that I wouldn't buy a sequel or an other expansion.

Hmm, have you played Suikoden 2? Chrono Cross? Disgaea? Breath of Fire4?

All of those games have great story, and "restriction" were you may go...
I'm saying that because there are a lot of RPGs "worth" playing, and that aren't FF.

About Oblivion, I played the game about a 100 hours, without even looking at the main quest.
Ok, it is kinda stupid, but, I wanted to do whatever I like in a nice BIG fantasy world, and so... Great game, anyway.

Now that confuses me,...I don't think there are two dungeons or caves alike in that entire game.

Same thing I did in Oblivion - just ignore the main quest for awhile, since there are so many other complex quests to accomplish first. I definitely played 100 hours as well, before doing the main quest ;-)
