Synaesthesia and your listening habits.

    Synaesthesia and your listening habits.

I’ve been listening to psychill for a while now, and for longer even than that, I’ve had this interesting thing happen to me.

Whenever I listen to something, I can see what the song sounds like. Most recently like thirty minutes ago while listening to Bridges to Shambala.

Apparently it’s called synaesthesia, and is not all that uncommon; the specific form in question here is sound → color synesthesia, in which certain sounds have a color to them. Higher pitches have a brighter color, usually, lower pitches a darker color, and so on. With me, sometimes there is a sense of motion, like a spinning sensation to the sound.

    There’s more information here.

If I’m listening to acid lounge or psychill, it tends to be more pronounced than with other genres, sometimes distractingly so; I wind up having to program my media player’s custom visualizations to get something that at least comes close to matching what I’m seeing in the music. Other times, though, it’s welcome, and exciting.

Though…apparently this is still considered weird. I’ve met a lot of people and gotten to know them well, and most of them looked at me oddly when I told them that the flute solo in “Angela” sounded silvery-blue. (“It sounds blue???”)

Who else has had this happen? And with what songs/artists? I’m curious.

Not only do I listen to music, I play instruments and mix on Fruity Loops. I'm better on an actual instrument. =p

I've always wanted to be synesthestheic (or however you adjectivize synesthesia...). Just seems like an awesome way to enjoy music even more.

  • ya mon

i am with you! Esp. when listening to psychill- I see pulsating colors and patterns - sometimes they form vivid pictures or landscapes
    sometimes just

    o.o

Wow, I was wondering if anyone would respond to this one. xD

The timing seems to affect it sometimes, and I think that psychill is some of the best to listen to for the experience. Psychill that incorporates found sounds like river noise and nature sound seems to be fun too. (Ishq for the win. Just watch that sky while you listen. <3)

Actually I can't imaging listening to music without it. As long as I remember I've been like this; and recently learned that so does my dad. It's probably why we're both as obsessed with music as we are.

I have synesthesia, but it is mostly in relation to numbers that have colors, and months of the years are colors to me too. Its pretty weird. But yeah ...I imagine a lot of light ambient chill as the color pink and purple, the jazzy stuff is a deep pruple or a brown.. etc. certain sounds I see as colors. And it goes beyond that too when I can attrribute numbers to the music based on the colors they have in common... OCD.. synesthesia.. mentally insane.. whatever you wanna call me!

    xD

Apparently no one I know is sure what to make of it when I mention that a song sounds like the color chartreuse (too many seventh chorts >.>)

With me it got to the point where at one point, I was using an older machine to hack Winamp visualizations to see if I could get them to match up to what I was seeing at the same time.

Usually what I see depends on the combinations of instruments; since usually an instrument is the same color all the time, I'm not usually thrown too far off when I listen to something new. (Though Prem Joshua confounds me…any time I listen to his music, the flute sounds lavender…and that isn't right…flutes are ice blue, doggone it)

I see colors and patterns with all music - probably the reason I've usually got my eyes closed at a party is so I can concentrate on what the groove looks like.

  • I know almost exactly what you mean.

I've been referring to songs by the colors of the personality they evoke for quite a while now. From vivid royal purples and deep, dark navy blues all the way to lighter beiges and creams.

Have you ever listen to a live performance by a symphonic orchestra? I swear that the stage before me is a swell of colors splashing together as separate groups of instruments... winds, strings, and brasses hold the floor.

Great stuff. Makes listening to psychedelic music a wonderful experience.

7 is green :-) sometimes it is a dark greenish-almost-bluish, though.
