FacelessShadows Though I'll admit I don't like the fact that heaps of newer Progressive Rock bands seem to exclusively base themselves upon Pink Floyd

FacelessShadows Wow, musical snobbery on last.fm, so surprising.

sobreviviente11 I agree that Pink Floyd is less progressive than KC or GG, but progressivity doesn't mean only complexity of composition. Progressive means also using new techniques, instruments, combining instruments and styles that haven't been combined before (Atom Heart Mother? hello?). And, maybe the most important, ambitious attitude for making music. Long compositions, concept albums, influences from surrealistic music and classic (aleatoric, to be specific). And for the love of no-god - PF commited only two questionable albums - Momentary Lapse Of Reason and Division Bell (and maybe Final Cut), and they are NOT known and worshipped for THESE works, so this group is just stupid, although I totally agree that neo-prog like Marillion is crap, and listening to them makes me vomit.

M-Phase-I-Saw "Of course I'm talking about later stuff." <- How about putting a bit more emphasis on that? Still, I won't let music like their four big albums be called "primitive" as in flat or uninspired. I admit, personally, I've defined the prog genre via its complex rhythm and virtuoso use of sound spectra for a long time. But I've come to look at those artists as expressionists of their complexity within, which may also include simple sound patterns (such as ELP's "Lucky Man"). To me, the Floyd's early works reflected a true spirit of experimentalism and virtuosity. Technique is only as authentic as the spirit beneath it.

UserNameMissing Hello! Prog rock is not only ''complex music''. It's also about lyrics, variety of instruments, different song structures (doesn't have to mean thousands of different time signatures) and so on... Probably nothing new here, but just had to say something...Thank you.

MishMog http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Progressive_rock http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive-rock.asp#definition http://www.progressiverockhalloffame.com/ http://www.progressiverock.com/timeline.php etc etc etc etc etc... You may very well have YOUR SUBJECTIVE OPINION on progressive rock, defining it purely by complexity, my friend... Still, there are tens of millions of hardcore progressive rock fans out there in the world, whom by no means whatsoever agree to your opinions. If your mission truly is nothing but to provoke, you are doing a fiiiine job indeed, But if you're actually looking to rewrite history of music... I humbly think you need to take a reality check. And I'm not even a great Pink Floyd fan, I prefer Van der Graaf Generator, Premiata Forneria Marconi, good old Genesis and tons of other progressive rock bands, though I might as well listen to Justin Timberlake, The Roots, DJ Krush, Amon Tobin, Nino Nardini, Kaija Saariaho, m-flo or Plaid, so this is not defensive in any kind.

Haldarious Your definition of Prog is weeeeeird, dude. Pink Floyd have long form, unconventional sructures, eclectic sounds and other elements that define Prog. From what you've been saying, I'm not sure if you even paid attention to the music at all. Hell, Pink Floyd are PART of the definition of Prog. In fact, every single source I've ever read on Progressive Rock cites Pink Floyd as one of the major innovators and fathers of the genre. You pretty much don't have a working definition of Prog at all. It'd be cool to learn a bit about something before you deliver an ultimatum on it. But if you dislike Pink Floyd, you could've just said so and left the genre alone. :p
November 2009 -
dAJaro progressive music != prog. progressive rock = prog (rock). progressive rock != doing new stuff all the time. progressive rock does not have to be complex. progressive rock is music that (is structured and) sounds like the original progressive rock band wave from the late 60s and early 70s + all the canonized bands. this includes pink floyd :p

dAJaro what's worse than not aknowledging that PF is prog, is stating at the top that non-prog music is primitive. i think 99.99% of all musicians that touched prog during their career would disagree, strongly.
November 2009 -
Tenozuma Progressive doesn't mean complex. Also, I think you'll find if you try to play their music that it's a lot more subtle and intricate than you realise. Same with The Beatles.
November 2009 -
mattCrimson why has this group not been deleted already...
November 2009 -
Duplode "PINK FLOYD (of course i'm talking about later stuff) = PRIMITIVE". The comment within the brackets is self-defeating.
November 2009 -
spirit154bone lol this is retarded. Progressive does not mean complex. Progressive refers more to a song's structure. A song that starts in one space and weaves through many other completely different spaces (I.E. not verse chorus verse chorus formula) is what makes something progressive. Music does not have to be complex to be progressive, however, being a composer studying at Berklee College of Music, I can tell you that Pink Floyd can sometimes get much more harmonically complex than most other bands. This group is retarded. Fail.

EddoeAntonio November 2009 -
gildermershina I think the misconception here is the word progressive, which has been retconned into a specific style of ambitious music from the late 60s and 70s, but the differences between a band like Pink Floyd and a band like Yes and let's say King Crimson to keep it well-known, are stylistically vast. The common thread is ambition, structurally, musically, conceptually, artistically. Progressive Rock was just an area of rock that tried to go beyond just "rocking out" and "having fun" and be much more "serious" and formal about the music. But hey, that's just common sense, right?
