i've sent you this in a PM, but here it goes again so we can discuss it..

my idea is: maybe the generator should count not the tags that other people did, but our own. or maybe get the genre information from trusted source, like for example www.Metal-archives.com or wikipedia.org. i'm saying this because some tags people give doesnt make any sense (to me). like for example "seen live". what if i havent seen them live? or "female vocalists" and "female fronted". i have them counted separately by the way. it can be any band from Ot3p to Black Eyed Peas...
and why not add together similar tags like "finnish" and "finland"; cuz thats the same, but is counted separately.

    http://blog.last.fm/2007/12/07/client-14-released-fingerprinting-begins

there is a beta fingerprint system by last.fm.
its affecting the name but iam not sure if the style like rock or is it alternative is affected :)

adding tags together sounds like a good idea to me but i have the feeling thats its difficult to implement...

  • i'd like to see the historical charts/graphs back in action. dunno why it was disabled. (oh well maybe server load :>)

DeadGirl7 good idea, but wikipedia etc. also have a mistake... np. Cascada - techno, dance, vocal trance. Dance - OK, but techno...? vocal trance...? Decidedly no... Somebody must know very good music style that write this tag (OMI).

Maybe I'm destined to be alone?
Or maybe there's someone who will understand, that I'm not able to share my world?
I'm still running away... It's crazy, I know...

    Hallo!

Yeah ist a good idea with a tag-filter, but not for version 1, because its a horrorible work...
The OMI Databse has now 324.707 bands with over 25.000 tags... :(
I hope in the OMI version 2.0 we can use the fingerprint system of last.fm, or we can make a special OMI filter.

Here are the top 1000 tags:

at the end we are at the same point like all the time(free translated from german to english):

trust nerver a statistic if you didnt fake it on your own ;)

as so long the formula is "opensource" how the statistic is calculated i think there is no problem of doing that, and maybe there could be different calculations for different meanings

maybe its a idea to create a forum for calculation formula ideas or so

but it should be just one formula which calculates the OMI

and maybe there is the OMI Month and OMI Week index as well?

    somehting like that

Instead of having a "cool-of" for the OMI calculation of one month (Now: if I calculated it on March, 20th, I'll have to wait till April, 20th) could we make it once-a-month: so, if I calculated it March, 20th I can calculate it again April, 1st (or April 3rd or 4th, after my charts updated), but not twice in the same month. Or is there too much danger of crashing the server when the charts are updated in the beginning of the month and everyone recalculates their OMIs? ^^

Hey. I've got excellent idea. Instead of 'ingore tags' feature could you just introduce 'merging' feature? It means that fo example progressive rock and progressive metal would be counted as one and so on.

I have an idea I'd like to see implemented.

I listen to a lot of video game music, and a lot of junk tags get associated with that. It's the reason I never used OMI before, because it just gave a bullshit graph. I recently saw you added a tag ignore feature, so I thought "Great, now I can ignore 'game', 'game music', etc., and make room for my metal tags."

Of course, that wasn't the case. After I ignore everything I want to ignore, it just says 30.0% video game music and 67.7% (wait, wut?) other.

That makes for a pretty boring graph. Any chance implementing a way of bumping those other tags up? Like giving people a choice of how many tags should be used in the graph.

    I would be very grateful.

As for the problem with the tags:

Lets make an official OMI tag list, consisting of only the most common genres and sub-genres (lets keep it simple to around 200 tags) and then lets associate the tags in the last.fm system with that list. This would allow OMI to filter all the wrong tags (seen live, mistagged artist, etc.) and all the misspelled tags.

This would also allow to make a wider base of tags with root tags. For example Jimmy likes listening to Nile, which is considered Brutal Death Metal. In the current situation, Jimmy has his Nile scrobbles counted as BDM, but Nile could easily be considered death metal as well as just metal. Thanks to The List we could keep track of this and count Nile as BDM, DM as well as the root - Metal.

@koji7- compare for example Drone Metal (like Sunn O))) ) and Death Metal, and answer the question: are they so similar that can be counted as just "Metal"?

i know that this is strange music, but there are ppl that listen to it, and I think that they are far from "standard metal"

MY suggestion: a better captcha. Really, I dunno if it's just me, but Musickum's captcha is the most human unfriendly captcha I've seen on the internet. Once every 10 times I get it correctly.
It feels like it was designed to protect the script against humans lol.

  • I have some suggestions. This is about weighing the tags.

    1. The dependend tag problem
As described above Death Meatl is Metal and Power Metal is also Metal, but most Death Metal isn't Power Metal.
    Solution:
Compare the bands that are tagged as both with the ones tagges as one. I.e. if you have 1000 bands tagged as Metal and 100 as Death Metal and 90 of them tagged as both. You get the probability of 9:10 that a Death Metal tag is a Metal tag and the probability of 9:100 that a Metal tag is a Death Metal tag. So the the tags must have such a weight for depending.

    2. The difference of independent tags
Metal and Rock are not the same, but how much it is not the same ? Somebody who listens to Metal and Rock is surely less open minded that somebody who listens to Metal and Country.
    Solution:
With double-tagged bands one can construct a graph between all tags with weights of difference of both. Following the ways from a source tag to a target tag will show how different both are.

    3. Underground tags
Listeres to Underground music are mostly more open minded than listeres of mainstream.
    Solution:
A often scrobbled tag has less weight. But it also depends of the number of bands that have this tag. A tag with more bands must have a higher weight. So a Bon Jovi-tag has much less weight than a Power Electronics tag if the same amount of listeners listens to PE and Bon Jovi. Also less scrobbled band should have a little more weight than big bands because someone who listens to unknown bands is often more into this scene than someone who just knows one bands of a special style and only listens to that one.

    4. Different songs
Some one who listens to a Jazz and a Metal album is more open minded that someone who listens to one Jazz and one Metal song ten times, because he is "more into it".
    Solution:
If a top 50 band has a top 50 song the band will get less weight.

I hope this thoughts could be an inspiration for you.

  • The Pie charts that are produced by the OMI are currently quite uninformative as far too many slices are shown. Pie charts are superb for showing size and preference relations when only few tags are shown though.
Thus I would recommend that while 'other' tags are shown in the text summary below that they are not to be included in the Pie chart. (for people with high OMI the chart might still be too crowded, but it would be a start :D

    tag filtering

i'm also for tag filtering. Why is open minded (146) someone with doom metal, black metal, progressive metal, folk metal, gothic metal, metal, avant-garde metal, grind metal, gore metal, death metal and similar in the chart?

    • lytron2 schrieb...

Please remove at least the "seen live"-tag out of the OMI-calculation, because... it simply makes no sense. I am not "openminded", because every artist I listen to has been seen live by a few persons?
It would be nice, too, if the "indie"-tag would be removed, but that somehow even describes a special kind of music (though it is wrong, because "indie" is in its original definition no music genre. But now it is even tagged on Bloc Party who are >not< on an indie label).

So, the indie-thing would start a looong discussion, but I think it would be pretty clear to everyone to remove the "seen live" thing, aye?

  • more of a statement then an idea, but, how about easier embedding to HTML (facebook/myspace)

but to convert this to HTML:

<IMG SRC="whatever the link for your image is..." ALT="idk..something random">

Here's an example (only problem is they won't stack):
    <a href=http://omi.musickum.com/index.php5?username=seoulspirit&skin=8>

    <IMG SRC="http://omi.musickum.com/graphics/mmt/s/8_seoulspirit.png"; ALT="seoul">

    Example so it's stacked

  • Hi,

in the FAQ stands that OMI only uses the top50 artists of the last 12 Months... but what about people which would like to know their all-time top50 artists OMI?

For me it doesn't matter know, but maybe in 2 Years or so, because I listen to much music und many genres. I think also that my musical taste is stable and it wouldn't change so extremly that I would stop listen to some kind of music from one day to another day.

I think a solution of that could be, to let the user choose between "alltime"- and "last 12 months"-OMI.

The effort to implement this functionality is in my eyes not to big... maybe only saving the information which kind of OMI und using different databases.
What do you think about this?

I think all the metal tags should be merged, or at least some of them. I mean, I've seen people with OMIs of over 170 who have listened to nothing but various different types of metal, which devalues it for the people who actually do have diverse tastes.

  • Wie wäre es mit einem OMI für Gruppen? Speziell für die OMI Gruppe würde mich die Zahl mal interessieren. ;-)
