Integration to mine, just easier to dump somewhere so the bot can pick it up. sorry for the confussion.

I might want some recommendations after I finish adding these to my playlist :D

then i will get the bot out to find 'similar' artists around the web and bobs your uncle i have another zillion artists that you may or may not know.

  • You'll well mark that of ~920 plays I have ~620 artists. Two out of every three plays are artists not in my library. I don't double back much, nor do limit myself geographically or temporally. And you can bet money that if I see somebody as champion who might know any significant fraction of things I have played before, I'll hit up the next thing in my mental 'to do' list of genres and it'll be from out of nowhere. (I know Alainn's been in my library, so watch where I go when he's champion after the break.)

    As for recommendations:
Alash Ensemble does badass Tuvan music.

alex mauer is an up-and-coming chiptuner who was featured heavily in the first season of Penny Arcade's autodocumentary "Penny Arcade" from PATV.

Alexander Brandon did many tracks to the background music in the original Unreal Tournament for which I have a nostalgic soft spot.

Anestis Delias was a true rebete who sang about prison and narghile like any proper dispossessed taverna singer.

Bai Guang and Bai Hong were both among the qi da gexing, the seven great singing stars of Shidaiqu, the Shanghai-centered jazz movement of the 1930s.

Bart Klepka does remixes of tracks from computer and video games. His Dune Arrakis wormsign mix is awesome.

Basil Poledouris has a place in my heart for his soundtrack to Red October. It's the best thing about that movie after Sean Connery.

Bei Bei ... IF THERE IS ONE ARTIST YOU LISTEN TO IN THIS IT SHOULD BE BEI BEI. She is the greatest guzheng player of the new generation, and she is working to move the guzheng into modern music without compromising the integrity of the depth of the instrument. Her work is sublime and transcendent and she deserves a thousand times more recognition.

Cao Zheng SUCKS and you should ignore his music. Holy crap, his interpretation of Fisherman's Song at Dusk is THE WORST I have ever heard. Not "among the worst" -- THE WORST. Fucking gradeschoolers can play guzheng better than that.

Charles Earland was a master of the electric organ and its application in funky jazz fusion.

Chocolate (- String Ensemble) same artist in both cases, just messy tags, but this group plays gayageums, the Korean descendant of the guzheng, with divine alacrity.

Conjure One does some very melodic vocal electronica, but I haven't heard their new stuff. Tears from the Moon was kind of the soundtrack to my last major breakup, cheesy as that may be. I really like the message of Center of the Sun as well.

Corky and the Juice Pigs should be well-known enough to be pop I think, but on the off chance you haven't heard of them, they were a Canadian satire group that did some really hilarious shit like Phone Sex Girl and (my favorite) Captain Greg, but they're best known for Only Gay Eskimo.

Curtis Mayfield is also well-known, but in my opinion he was even funkier than James Brown.

That takes us through the C's... maybe more tomorrow.

  • Yeah the Overlord 2 theme is both grandiose and whimsical.

Since we're talking about game OSTs then Jeremy Soule's work on Total Annihilation was freakin' awesome... even if that was more than a dozen years ago now.

The 12 Most NSFW Videos Of 2010

Link - I won't embed them here since Stereogum has made a great list, especially the video by Health is a horror flick in itself.

  • Tsk, tsk. Jeremy Soule?

Organic life is nothing but a genetic mutation, an accident.
Your lives are measured in years and decades.
    You wither, and die.
We are eternal, the pinnacle of evolution and existence. Before us, you are nothing.
Your extinction is inevitable. We are the end of everything.

D Fast used to do some awesome DnB back when he was on (now extinct) traxinspace, but I'm underwhelmed by his newer stuff.

Dubmood & dustbin are both great chiptuners, dubmood is fairly internet-famous since his excellent Ninjaflood Starts School has been made the background music to tons of flashes on 4chan etc. I frequently use dustbin's stuff for my phone ringtones and alarms.

E Nomine is fairly well known but they're something of a guilty pleasure purely for the fact that they mix Latin and German in most of their work, which were the only languages I formally studied, and I love the German guys who do their voice-overs. They growl their way through the lines exactly the way German should sound.

Etsuko Chida plays the koto, a Japanese descendant of the guzheng, with all the sublime, meditative austerity associated with its performing traditiion, but with clear skill and passion. (Some of my other favorite koto players are unknown to last.fm such as Michio Kimoto and Sawako Fukuhara, examples below respectively.)

Franco Micalizzi (I realize I put his name in wrong when I added him when I opened the account, it's less one 'l' plus one 'z') is a lesser known spaghetti western composer... I can't help but love some of his rat pack-esque cheese like this:

Guan Pinghu is the best guqin (guzheng predecessor) player of the last century or two. There is a reason why he was chosen to represent Chinese music on the gold record included with the Voyager probe. His version of Flowing Water is the best I have ever heard or am likely to hear. Sad that it seems guqin music has practically died with his generation. Contemporary guqin players all seem to treat their instruments like dead things, Master Guan's performances exuded life and dynamism, not a constant mindless drone of cold austerity. Makes me want to go to the guqin associations and shake the members around and admonish them, learn! Learn from your ancestors! Guqin is the oldest zither in human history and its relevance is dying now because its performers are killing it. It is disgraceful.

    Uh... ahem...

Hou Yanqiu is a talented suona soloist. The suona is a type of shawm that is very loud and might sound obnoxious to Western ears, but it is really quite lyrical in its application. In Chinese music it frequently represents an abstraction of the human voice or the songs of birds. The former is represented below:

As an example of the latter I present another artist last.fm doesn't know exists, Hao Yuqi:

And with that I will take another break.

    上得山多终遇虎

You'll well mark that of ~920 plays I have ~620 artists.

You will understand myself soon enough. Nothing gets passed me. :D

If I keep doing things I haven't done before, you can't know I'm going to do them.

(Which really wasn't exactly what Master Sun meant, but my usage was poetic license. His context was more along the lines of 'if the structure/arrangement of an army is intangible/invisible then it cannot be accounted for by an opposing force.')

oh ok. but if i am going to get similar artists of all my artists i have on my list, that means the probability is slimer than if a guy without a similar bot will do :D

Anyone else remember Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri? That quote was used for the Hunter-Seeker Algorithm secret project.

I haven't played that one but the graphics look cool:

Update: I should start playing Dune II again (one of the first RTS games):

The second one is like a 1970's 80's (lo-fi) low budget sci fi.

I thought the first RTS was Wasteland (PC) 1988?

This game inspired games like Red Alert, Age of Empires and Fallout.

Compared to Dune 1 (lame adventure/RPG/movie-ripp-off) this was Citizen Kane.

? Wasteland is an RPG not an RTS, it even says so in the video.

    Statcounter

For members who want to keep track on how many people come by on their profile there's a handy free tool on Statcounter.com: you can make a project for your profile and they provide you with an invisible pixel (paste it in your About me-section).

After that you can create a blocking cookie for your browser so you don't distort the stats if you reload your profile often. Then you just let it gather the info for a couple of weeks and then you get to see the number of unique visitors, repeat visitors, the region/city where they're from, OS+browser-version, how many times they've come by and an option to label their IP address.

This works not only on profile pages but on group pages (if you're group leader) as well.
