@ alienhated In short, the apollonian/dionysian is not necessarily a dualism. One can have aspects of both. However, obviously Nietzsche preferred the dionysian lifestyle which is more hedonistic and promiscuous. This lead him to contract syphilis (possibly from a whore in Italy or Switzerland) in the late 1870's or early 1880's something that ultimately drove him crazy in 1888. 'Ecce Homo' ('88) are just the hopeless and megalomaniac Swan song lines of a dying madman.

  • alienhated

Now I remember that the dionysian may be used exactly to argue the opposite, that is, the difference, because it is related to the intuitive, while the apollonian to the abstract, that is the identification of various things in one concept whch implies necessarily that we ignore the differences between things. May this be one of nietzsche contradictions?

The ubermensch, I think is: the total acceptance of life even if completely devoid of meaning, truth, etc etc; the acceptance of the eternal return; "becoming what you are"; the philosopher as rule maker; life as art, or as "the work of art".

Natebag. " People calling him 'progressive egalitarian' and 'fascist'. Some interpretations are simply better than others, but no interpretation is complete." I agree. And I think he has a little of both those 2. in one level, apollonian one (order, stability), nobody is equal, we are all born different from each other, but on the other, dionysian one (chaos, change), we are all individuations of the same "will", therefore being the same deep beneath. But the world isn't just one of them, it's both. Truth would lie in the dionysian, falsehood in apollonian. Us, humans, normally think the opposite, that apollonian is the truth and falsehood. He would prefer the dionysian beacause it is more true, or is a better lie.

If you want some help in understanding Nietzsche or just want to dig a little deeper in some of the key concepts like master/slave morality and "the death of god", you can find a rather comprehensive (if I may say so myself :) explanation of this in chapters 4 and 7 of my thesis (the link to which you can find on the top of this page). If you ever read it, be sure to let me know your thoughts :) Untill then, enjoy your class on Nietzsche!

i'm currently taking a class in my uni that is solely dedicated to nietzsche. i gain more and more respect for him, the more and more i read his works. he truly knew how to write in a poetic, and critical way.

I agree with johntardsbaby66 and with dyingdreams. Nietzsche opposed the state, and it's true he dedicated a whole Zarathustra speech for criticize the state. I really got a anarchist view from Zarathustra. I think he called 'dogs' to the socialist-anarchist ones.

I agree with dyingdreams, I got an anarchist view from Zarathustra. @HoloHoax: You're pretty fucking stupid. And anarchist as in a way of anti-state, anti-group kind of thing, Will to Power means autonomy. Those who have the most power are those that control themselves completely, if Nietzsche wanted people to have power over other people, he would be supporting a state in essence. There's a whole chapter in Thus Spoke Zarathustra about the state. I suggest you actually read some of his books.

    Oktober 2009
  • dyingdreams

I'm not talking quotes and oneliners, read the books. He can "support anything" only when taken out of context.

    Oktober 2009
  • dyingdreams

You misunderstood him then. There's more than one type of anarchist; at its core the Ubermensch is an anarchist in the sense of setting his own standards, but that doesn't mean he strives after chaos. Quite the contrary. The anarchist Nietzsche meant as despicable was one that defines anarchy as equality and strives for it out of weakness; in other words anarchy with socialist connotations.

  • Neantise

Nietzsche loathed anarchists, the_nose. He compared them to Christians in The Antichrist and called them "dogs" in Beyond Good and Evil.

Nietzsche opposed nationalism, the state, etc. he also opposed religion, and does refer to Jesus as a "Jew" and a "Hebrew" when he criticizes religion... I'm sure he hated Judaism just as much as he hated Christianity, the State, Socialism, etc.

A really wonderful drama film indeed, even though it kind of shatters the reality. Impressed by Armand Assante's acting and the prophet scene about Zarathustra.

@fkln I think Nietzsche was astonished how this small, strange nation (Jews) with sick religions is so strong. Another thing is in his sympathies. In this philosophy there is no place for peace, weakness, and mercy, thats why nazism and satanism (oposite to christianity) use his thinking.

    Juni 2009
  • dyingdreams

Not saying that Nietzsche was an anti-semite by a long shot, that's mostly said by people who have never read one letter he wrote, but I wouldn't exactly go about claiming his adoration for Jews either. I don't see any problems with that.
