Duran Duran w/ Your Vegas @ Beau Rivage Biloxi, MS Dec. 6, 2008

I was lucky enough to see Duran Duran make a stop in Biloxi on their final leg of the Red Carpet Massacre Tour. Being a fan for the last 4 years and basically being obsessed with this band since I saw them in New Orleans in 2005, this was the opportunity of a lifetime for me personally. They let us unfortunate non-VIP’s in at 7:30 P.M. where it was a mad dash to get arm bands and then it was to the floor. I was pleasantly surprised to see the VIP only took up about 2 rows, so my crew got premium standing area. We waited for 30 minutes where we met some amazingly friendly folks. Tina and her husband were our first acquaintances, and they are about the sweetest folks I’ve ever met. Then unbelievably the VIPs asked if my little cousin (11) could see, which of course she couldn’t, so they let her right to the front of the stage!!! Amazing!
I’m eternally grateful to all who let her up there. She had the time of her life.

Then in a flash, the amazingly talented Your Vegas took the stage. These guys blew me away. They had a fantastic live set. Blazing through 8 of the 10 songs on their debut album, A Town and Two Cities, Your Vegas did nothing, but impress the Duranies in the front rows. The huge vocal swoons of Coyle Girelli were propped on the wonderful melodies of crunchy guitars and driving New Wave beats. “Birds of Paradise”, “In My Head”, and “Troubled Times” were big winners with the Biloxi crowd and Girelli promised his new found fans another visit in 2009.

At 9:00 P.M. the lights darkened again as the techno-ish music and helicopter sounds fill the air. Lights begin rotating and strobes pop in time with a pulsating beat. John Taylor, the recovered Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor, and Simon Le Bon rush onto the stage in an ear-busting array of screams. The ladies still love their Duran boys. Starting with dirty dance floor beats of “The Valley”, the band personified the ultimate cool of their hey day. They then proceeded to rip into the crowd pleasing hits of “Hungry Like the Wolf”, “Notorious”, and “Save A Prayer”. The ever evolving Duran Duran always has a new trick up its sleeves though. They meshed the songs seamlessly in a 5 song mega mix, from the new Justin Timberlake/Timbaland produced “Nite Runner” through the Aggressive title track of the new album, “Red Carpet Massacre”. This was the result of Duran’s work with super producer, Mark Ronson, earlier this year for a charity concert in Paris. Then it was back to the fantastic bond theme, “A View To A Kill” and other hits including, Come Undone, Ordinary World, and the #1 The Reflex. The band also included a heavy version of White Lines from their 1995 covers album, “Thank You”. The Encore was, the always great, “Girls on Film”, in which Le Bon proceeded to introduce the band. Finally, there was the iconic, “Rio”. With sweet bass lines, break-neck drums, and bubbly synths, The set closer left everyone in awe and wanting more. Duran Duran never fails to impress me and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this amazing band.
