    Oldschool Death Metal Recommendations

As I'm heavily into oldschool DM the last few months, I'm looking for every possible classic that is hidden somewhere, so, can you guys recommend me some stuff?

Albums/bands I already know and recommend to others are:
    Pestilence - Malleus Maleficarum
    Pestilence - Consuming Impulse
    Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
    Possessed - Seven Churches
    Burial - Relinquished Souls
(This Burial album is downloadable at their official website)
    Messiah - Hymn To Abramelin
    Slaughter - Strappado
    Entombed - Left Hand Path
    Grave - Into The Grave
    Grave - You'll Never See...
Asphyx - Last One On Earth
    Nocturnus - The Key
    Autopsy - Severed Survival
    Autopsy - Mental Funeral
    Incubus - Serpent Temptation

There are more I've checked, but these ones are the best out of what I've heard. So, begin.

PS: You can also recommend those old-sound death/thrash bands. Their music borders with oldschool DM quite a lot.

    Bolt Thrower

    Benediction

    old cannibal corpse, Broken hope

malevolent creation's first 2 albums (the others are good, too, but these are obviously more old-school)

    Protector

Suffocation - effigy of the forgotten

    Vomitory - revelation nausea

I've heard Suffocation's Effigy Of The Forgotten before (forgot to mention it). Good album.
I'll see if I can find the rest you recommended.

Another thing: I've heard Cannibal Corpse's Tomb Of The Mutilated, and I thought it was boring like hell. Should I still check out old Cannibal Corpse?

Newer Malevolent is not maybe that old school what Ten Commandments but hell, it has always been there in their music. I even personally think Eternal is their best album.

    Baphomet - No Answers
Cancer - To The Gory End
    Demented Ted - Promise Impure
    Electrocution - Inside The Unreal
    Gorguts - Erosion Of Sanity
    Gorguts - Conisdered Dead
    Impaler - Charnel Deity
    Insanity - Death After Death
    Konkhra - Sexual Affective Disorder
Liers In Wait - Spritually Uncontrolled Art EP
    Miasma - Changes
Suffocation - Despise the Sun EP
    Resurrection - Embalmed Existence

and of course early Deicide, early Morbid Angel, early Obituary and Malevolent Creation.

well if you think tomb of the mutilated is boring, maybe check out butchered at birth.

but come on... hammer smashed face, i cum blood, ... boring?
    i don't get it ;)

i also think eternal is among the best Malevolent creation albums, but i don't really consider it old-school either.
I don'T enjoy their new material as much as thei old stuff.

Thank you all for these very fine recommendations. :)

  • I seem to be a little bit late with this, but..
There was a Brazilian Death Metal band called Incubus (not to be confused with the US band Incubus, or the British NWOBHM band Incubus) which I've always been into. They had two full length albums - Beyond the Unknown and Serpent Temptation, with the first being released in (I believe) 1987, and Serpent Temptation being released in 1988. In 1992 - 1993, they did a little remastering for Relapse, and both albums were released on one CD, called Beyond the Unknown/Serpent Temptation. It's a worthwhile purchase if you can find it.

All I have in this world is my balls and my word, and I don't break 'em for no one. You understand?

It's never late. Incubus is under United States, they only have two brazilian members who moved pretty early to states and got friends with these other guys and they formed a band called Incubus. But i agree Incubus was very good thrash metal band, if you didn't know they have regrouped under Opprobrium name (for obvious reasons, the other alternative rock band toxicized their earlier name) and released one album in 2000, Discerning Forces is the same vein as was Incubus, so it's goddamn good.

I have to fix one thing from my earlier post. Baphomet's No Answers isn't death metal, it is thrash metal too.

Carnun Rising - At The Dawn Of A New Dark Age (2003)
Best irish metal band ever. Total old school thrash-death mayhem. All i can say, Holy Fuck!

  • Demigod - Slumber of Sullen Eyes

Easily one of the best DM albums ever conceived.

Bah bah. Hello, here's a few good old school albums. :)

    Autopsy - Mental Funeral
    Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding
    Malevolent Creation - Ten Commandments
    Abhorrence - Vulgar Necloratry
    Darkthrone - Soulside Journey
Bolt Thrower - The IVth Crusade
Bolt Thrower - Those Once Loyal
    Bolt Thrower - The Mercenary
    Disavowed - Point Of Few
Edge Of Sanity - The Spectral Sorrows
Grave - Back From The Grave

Some of those are pretty technical, like Cannibal Corpse, but it's still a major kick ass album, you definately NEED to check it out. Stripped, Raped And Strangled, The Pick-Axe Murders...awesome!

Abhorrence is the early version of Amorphis. Under the name of Abhorrence they played nonmelodic, very oldschoolish death metal. I personally think it's great. Darkthrone's pre-black metal era made me jump the walls as well, it's great. You need to check out a Darkthrone-song called Snowfall, almost epic death metal song (length, around 8 minutes) and still brilliantly br00tal.

Bolt Thrower you already know. They're one of my top favourites of all time. I just love their sound. I'm one of those who don't care a flying fuck if their albums all sound the same, because I enjoy the riffs and the certain unique sound they have so much that I could listen to their CDs pretty much all the time.

Edge Of Sanity is melodic death metal, BUT, for your own sake, DON'T MIX IT UP WITH NOWADAY'S GOTHENBURGH/THRASH/DEATH-FUSS. On the album The Spectral Sorrows, it's more of a slow-paced onslaught with harsh production and creepy melodystuff. It differs a whole lot from the continuous keyboard-soloing bumping to 286bpm. The guitarsounds and the whole production makes it sound pretty brutal and tough, so that's why I brought it up here. Beat me, l337 tr00 metallists if this made your wet dreams a grey nightmare, but I'm serious.

    Re:

    Adramalech - Pure Blood Doom
    Armagedon - Ivisible Circle
    Convulse - World Without God
    Deteriorate - Rotting in Hell
Maceration - A Serenade Of Agony
    Masacre - Total Death
    Nokturnel - Nothing But Hatred
Any Paganizer after their debut Deadbanger wich was shitty (<-notice that word, I like good speed) speed metal, after it old school death metal with some thrash influences.
    Sadism - Tribulated Bells
Solstice - Pray (other good death-thrash metal band besides Malevolent Creation and Resurrection where Alex Marquez was involved back in the day.)
    Solstice - Solstice
    Thornafire - Exacerbated Gnostic Manifestation

  • Immolation :)

  • A few albums not already mentioned...

    Impaler (UK) - Charnel Deity
Revenant - Prophecies of A Dying World
    Rottrevore - Iniquitous

I believe Varoth is already aware of most of these but thought I'd add them for others who may not know them.

One of Speckmann's earliest projects before he was involved in Master. It is very dirty death/thrash and excellent. The 2 demos were re-released together. The first demo is much better than the second one though.

Check out Monastyr and Magnus from Poland. Old School Death Metal as its best.

    Monastyr - Never Dreaming
Magnus - I Was Watching My Death (singer sounds like annoyed Chuck Schuldiner, so, perfect)

One cannot mention Fleshcrawl too often. Now i'm not such an old-school Death Metallist myself, atleast i don't see myself as that, but this band definitely delivers the goods. Been listening Bloodred Massacre-album lately, but Made Of Flesh remains the most addictive. It's just total headbanging all the way.

General Surgery is also worthy mentioning. Sure, it's a total Carcass-blowjob, but rather good one on that. Their first full-length named as Left Hand Pathology got released few months ago.
