Beschreibung:
This group is for people who like European medieval music. Please join if you are into things like Gregorian chant, virelai, trouvères, minnesingers, ars subtilior and Trecento.

Medieval music means music from the Middle Ages. This era begins with the fall of the Roman Empire and ends in approximately the middle of the fifteenth century.

Please note that this group is not about "medieval rock", neofolk, darkwave, pagan black metal, ethnoambient or new age music. Although these styles of modern popular music are sometimes called "medieval", they usually bear little or no connection to actual music of the Middle Ages. There are numerous groups on last.fm devoted to "mittelalter rock" or "neofolk" type of music. However, this one is for people who are interested in authentic medieval era music.

Has anyone seen the movie that was just released call 'Vision'? It's about the life of St. Hildegard von Bingen and has several of her compositions featured including the Ordo Virtutum. There's a slight bit of 20th projection in that they try to make her into a proto-feminist, but it's not so strong as to be a major distraction. Overall, it's quite good. Wonder what other members thought of it.

I'm afraid nobody knows the composer of "Anglia" since it appears to be a folk song.

my favs are Guillaume de Machaut and Philippe de Vitry, the music through the Orlando Consort and Sequentia. I got a lot of music of the period (specially Gregorian Chants) with unknown info too :(.... but really worst with the ancient Greek and Roman musique... obviously

I would say the problem with the question of whether to tag composer or performer is that too little actual mediaeval music exists in such a state that it can be played by a performer with minimal interpretation. If the music is fragmental at best, then the performer is really as much the author of the piece as the composer whose work has been adapted for performance. For a lot of early mediaeval music, frankly we know very little about how it should really sound when played and as such any version we hear has to be considered as interpretative and not authentic (if such a concept can really exist in mediaeval music).

Yeah, this is why I think the rule "always tag the composer when scrobbling Western art music" sucks. I prefer to tag the performing artist instead. Even that has some problems when there are many ensembles, choirs, soloists etc. collaborating in the very same track, though.

Lots of medieval composers are unknown and no information about their songs, they are just tagged "anonymous".

I won't add that to group connections, because Music of the Middle Ages is mistagged. You should either tag the performer or the composer.
