    Foals

    Check out their "Balloons EP".

Sounds a bit like The Young Knives, tight yet full of thrust.

Also reminds me of 23 Skidoo.

The Teenagers - Reality Check (2008)

Talking over dance beats ought not to work, but that's what they said about the bendy bus.

    Choice Video Cuts:

    "Love No"

    "Scarlett Johanson"

Funny what can come out of a jokester band huh? I wouldn't say all the songs hold the same quality, but who doesn't love Scarlett?

Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles (2008)

Less is more in many cases, that would appear to include album art.

You'd expect simple vocals to accompany the waves of space invaders, but erm, not quite.

    A future retro classic?

That's what I find refreshing, they're having a laugh but it's not all that obvious.

    The album's a grower.

    MGMT - Oracular Spectacular (2007)

Brooklyn, New York is renowned for cultural diversity and an arty indie rock hipster scene pumping out loads of genre bending tunes such as MGMT's psychedelic synthpop with hints of surf, jungle, & country. A wild, but catchy concoction that is a refreshing sparkle to the ears.

While you are at it check out another Brooklyn favourite:

"Yeasayer (pronounced “yay-sayer”) takes place in the future, somewhere in the Middle East where citizens wear turquoise robes, live in crystal towers, and overindulge on Peter Gabriel albums."

They describe their music as “Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel”.

I've only listened to "In Ghost Colours" once so far, and I must say, it wasn't what I hoped for. I really enjoyed "Bright Like Neon Love", but perhaps this release is further towards what they did on their version of Fabric Live, which I only think is half good. Some good songs, some I don't really like. And that's the impression I got of their new album too. I'll see though, might be a grower!

It was an instant hit on my jukebox. There are neworderish overtones on quite a few tracks, a giveaway as to their roots. :)

Punch for punch, I think this could go 10 rounds with "Bright Like Neon Love".

The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement (2008)

    Choice Video Cut:

    "The Age of the Understatement"

If the Arctic Monkeys had emerged in 1995, this is what they'd sound like. Tight guitars, strings, theatrical build-ups and crescendos, lyrics worthy of any self respecting street poet.

It's all rather clinical (and calculated).

As for the 60's overtures, Gene Vincent could step in as front man and you'd hardly notice the difference.

    These clever people.

The Manhattan Love Suicides - The Manhattan Love Suicides (2008)

I made the mistake of seeing them live before getting the album (idiot), so it sounds a bit monophonic (when compared with realtime buzzsaws). Well, I suspect they didn't spend much on the recording in any case.

Their style, The Jesus and Mary Chain with Sarah Cracknell on vocals (as opposed to Toni Halliday up front, which would describe Curve). Speaking of Curve, the bass player described how "Coast Is Clear" was a life changer when the needle hit the groove, which funilly enough happened to me as well.

With Alan Moulder and Flood on production, this band could go far. A knock on Dean Garcia's door wouldn't go amiss (guys).

Does It Offend You, Yeah? - You Have No Idea What You're Getting Yourself Into (2008)

The band were recently slated by NME for "not meeting the new standard as set by The Klaxons". However, this is far superior stuff.

Just goes to show how screwed modern music journalism is.

Hadouken! - Music For An Accelerated Culture (2008)

There's something special about Hadouken!'s analogue sound (sort of Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam style, but not)? I can never quite put my finger on it, maybe it's something completely new in music.

Yes, it took a year for this album to hit the shelves, but that's no reason to knock it straight into the bargain bin.

The Ting Tings - We Started Nothing (2008)

Apparently, their latest single is top spot in the national pop chart? More evidence then that pop has indeed eaten itself (and the indie snake is feasting on the remains).

As for this album, it's the best debut I've heard in a while (it's certainly varied). It's head is in 1981/2 with girl groups such as Bow Wow Wow, The Belle Stars (and Bananarama, when they were with Fun Boy Three and actually good).

This is good stuff, don't be swayed by negative reviews in the press. Go listen!

    Sebastien Tellier - Sexuality (2008)

Like the second coming of Jean Michel Jarre.

This isn't a solid album as such, but tracks like "Sexual Sportswear" are very well done. It's like the good old days, pay £14 for a CD that contains no more than 3 excellent tracks, but oh well.

The Notwist - The Devil, You & Me (2008)

They are back. They didn't reinvent themselves (which wasn't to be expected anyway), but it sounds fresh and new. instantly puts you in the mood of e.g. "Neon Golden" which sweetened the last six years of music.

    don't ask me. ask
