Staff Journal: Your First Album?

  • Album: Dónde están los ladrones?

    When did I get it:
I don't remember the specific year, I think I was in eight grade at the time........

    Format
    CD

    Do I still rate it?
I know that lots of people hate Shakira, but this album and "Pies Descalzos" are still some of my favourites. I grew up with them, and some of the lyrics are impressive, even now that I'm out of the "pop" world and trying out different music.

  • Album: Slippery When Wet

    When did I get it:
    Not really certain.

    Format:
    Cassette

    Do I still rate it?:
It's one of those cassettes that I never bought on CD and, as I married into a copy of Bon Jovi's greatest hits, it's nowhere near the top of my wish list. But it's still a lot better than the stuff they're releasing these days.

  • Album: Behaviour

When did I get it?: Late January or early February in 1991. I was 11 going on 12.
That was the first album I bought myself, with my pocket money. Beforehand there were mixed tapes my cousins made or stuff my parents bought for me.

    Format: Cassette

Do I still rate it?: Hell yeah! It's still one of my all time favourites.

I'm not entirely sure about this, but I think...

    Album: Space Jam Soundtrack

When did I get it? I had seen it at the movies with my brother and my dad, and then I think I got the cd for christmas, that was 1996, 9 years old. (The first cd I bought myself was R.E.M. I think.)

    Format: CD.

Do I still rate it? No. But it's actually not that bad, haha. Must have played it a 1000 times when I got it. Definitely sentimental value, that's why it's still in my collection.

  • I bought this one too, in casette.^

  • Albums: Greatest Hits & Close Encounters Of The Third Kind

When did I get it? Got both albums at the same time, back in '81.

    Format: Vinyl

Do I still rate it? Yup. It still feels good to sing along to Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust", "Bicycle Race", "Flash" and "We Will Rock You". Brings back a lot of good childhood memories. They both do... :)

    Album: To The Extreme

When did I get it? In 1991, on the day my parents bought a CD player.

    Format: CD

Do I still rate it? Despite the fact "Ice Ice Baby" is routinely laughed at, I think it's the one decent track on this album. The rest is utter shite, but I don't mind hearing "Ice Ice Baby" every now and then. I still know all the words by heart - you can really disturb your friends when playing sing star if you can beat them at Ice Ice Baby while not even facing the screen.

    OMG it was...

    Album: Out Of The Blue

When did I get it? 1977 when it came out. At 12 I was a bit too young (not to mention provincial) to get punk.

Format: Vinyl - ask your parents kids.

Do I still rate it? Errr... no, not even for kitsch value.

  • hey,
(i cant think of any right now, but)
how about we do 'our first Hip-Hop album', or 'My First Black Metal Album', or whatever. it'd be cool if it was a specific genre u are now an expert on. just do a big list of all ur firsts. even if u only tried one and gave up straight away.
(i think thats a good idea.)

    stab me 'til i cum
  • man, i cant think of any. didnt know what Post-Punk or Shoegaze was until Cylob invented it and started talking about it here, but i cant even think what of those i tried first. i suppose i had some Talking Heads albums from a long time ago.

    maybe
Manic Street Preachers - Generation Terrorists (1992)
    was my first "Punk" album.

    ...
Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1995)
was my first Brit Pop cd. i think mentioned in this thread that i wanted Parklife and my Mum got me that. i think that was my first album.

    A list (here) is good.

Even better if you copied the firsts over to the desks.

    Something like this?
