never been a big post-punk lover but Virgin Prunes and criminally overlooked The Chameleons are my favorites.

  • I'd also recommend Camouflage too. Their album Voices & Images is excellant, even though it is older than Sensor.

Eccentric Musical Captain. Music Advice Center is where it's at!

I'm part of the New Order that works at a Kraftwerk. (That's a Power Station for all the Simple Minds out there.)

    hello.
i was around a mate's house the other day and he was listening to this compilation of manchester stuff (The Fall, The Smiths, that type of thing) and on comes The Chameleons 'second skin'. i instantly loved it, and then checked out the album it was from 'Script of the Bridge'. loved that too.
i'm interested in anything interesting you have to say about them, and also where to go from here.
i'm in the middle of getting two other albums by them ('Strange Times' and 'What Does Anything Mean, Basically') and i'm also downloading two albums by 'The Sound' 'cos i've heard good things about them.
i'm not massively into the new wave sound or anything (at least, not at the moment!) but it's really gotten to me!

ok, so yeah, thanks in advance!

First, a tip on The Sound. I assume you're getting this album:

    The Sound - Jeopardy (1980)

    Picks
    I Can't Escape Myself
    Heartland
    Missiles

They were one of The Chameleon's favourite bands, Mark Burgess even stepped in to cover a Sound gig, after Adrian Borland committed suicide. That's what you call dedication.

    Another suggestion:

Fad Gadget - Fireside Favourites (1980)

    Picks
    Coitus Interruptus
    Pedestrian
    State of the Nation

Those, along with Strange Times and What Does Anything Mean, Basically will make for a good week of listening.

    Oh go on, another album:

    B-Movie - Radio Sessions 1981-84 (2001)

    Tracks
    Nowhere Girl
    All Fall Down
    The Devil In Me

Check back later for more input.

Echo & the Bunnymen, The Church and The Psychedelic Furs
are the most similar matches to them i believe.

they are not overwhelmingly pop like duran duran or new order or a little too depressive like bauhaus or a little too punk like siouxsie and the banshees or a little too raw/quiet/brooding like depeche mode. i think they are standing inbetween dreampop and post-punk and to me it's a very good spot to stand.

That's an excellent description of The Chameleons, the meeting point of Post-Punk and Dreampop.

The problem I have with Second Skin is that whenever I read the title I think "Second Head" and put on Kilimanjaro instead.

    to start with a few song;

church : destination, under the milky way, reptile
furs : love my way, pretty in pink, ghost in you

if you prefer the best album

Starfish or their best of called under the milky way : the best of the church

All Of this And Nothing or, again, their best of Greatest Hits

hint : did you watch the movie donnie darko ? then you've heard the church :)

i did watch it, but i can't remember any of it!

ok, so here's what i think so far:
i didn't think much of the sound.
    i loved kilimonjaro.
    church was ok
    psychadelic furs was ok.

  • Perhaps The Comsat Angels? They're a little stronger still on the post-punk elements than the Chameleons, stronger rhythm section, but I can see people appreciating The Teardrop Explodes really liking them (or even and especially fans of Joy Division - because of the bleak, minimalist, Silence As An Instrument approach - with whom they share an appreciation of J. G. Ballard) - I'd start with their first, Waiting for a Miracle, although all their early albums are very good.

Ok, I asked for similar stuff to Suicide and got recommended The The - Soul Mining, Martin Rev and The Pop Group.

I want to make it clear that I'm not criticising the recommendations, it's more that I should have explained better what I was looking for. What I love about the Suicide album (I only have the first one) is the brooding and introspective atmosphere of it, the stand out track on there for me is Che - that's the kind of think I'm after.
The The I vaguely remember but have never really listened to, I did give it Soul Mining a brief listen with an open mind, but I just couldn't get into it at all - too poppy and upbeat (not that there's anything wrong with either of those things) and it sounded dated to me. I'm getting on a bit better with The Pop Group (I've got We are time)..but what I'm really after is that dark and moody sound that Suicide have, maybe like some of Joy Divisions moodier moments (Autosuggestion, perhaps) or even Nick Cave - more the mood I'm after than the specific style, if that makes sense. Thanking you in advance.

    edit
I'm having trouble finding Martin Rev stuff at the moment, but I'm hoping that will be what I'm looking for.

You just described "Jeopardy" by The Sound.

  • What sprung to mind at ljbates request was:

The Birthday Party - Hee Haw
    Tom Waits - Real Gone.
I've only listened to a few Suicide songs not long ago, it was the poppy ones. =\

I've been meaning to get something by Mission of Burma for a while now. Where's a good place to start?

  • Get Obliterali, then work your way down obscurity lane..

    ....yes

silence is merely the absence of sound
  • Their early catalog was pretty small, and it's all essential. Their only album was "Vs.", and they also released the excellent ep "Signals, Calls and Marches". The Rykodisc reissue of the ep also includes the great single "Academy Fight Song/Max Ernst". Pick up the above two releases, and you'll be quite satisfied.

They also had a live album, and a couple odds and sods collections (Peking Spring being the better of the two), but I'd start with the original album and ep. The two albums they've released since reforming are also quite good, and highly recommended.
