I've been pacing this desk all day waiting for a customer (knuckles flexed).

In the meantime I'll put my feet up and listen to "Damaged Goods" on repeat.

  • birthday party...nick cave, 'nuff said. and i second or third the motion on gang of four (but only in regards to entertainment! and solid gold, not a fan of the later releases).

a random double LP i picked up on vinyl 6 months or so back has a really good collective of female post-punk / new wave female artists called Grlz (lame i know but the track listing is stella) with maximum joy, dorothy, slits, bow wow wow and others on it.

The Cure's Disintegration is pretty much the best album ever recorded.

    It's a flawless album, certainly.

    Back to Suicide:

The The - Soul Mining (1983)

Not a carbon copy, but somewhat alike. "Perfect Day" is very similar to "Cheree" (for example) in tune and tone.

The The are seriously underated (for my money) and worth anyone's time.

    The The, kills good call!

  • Ha, 'flawless' is certainly the right word for "Disintegration", so much so it almost puts me off (but only almost) - my favourite of theirs will always be "The Head On The Door", I guess.

Now, in an only slightly desperate attempt to be controversial, may we call Blondie (constant chart occupants as they were and on the whole quite pop) New Wave? Because if we can (and frankly, even if we can't), at least "Parallel Lines" and "Plastic Letters" are essential.

Well, and then there's Depeche Mode. [Long meaningful pause.] I don't think anyone anywhere in the world with a remote interest in music or life in general (not that there was much of a difference) should be without (possibly not in that order, though possibly yes) "Some Great Reward", "Music For The Masses", "Violator", "Songs Of Faith And Devotion", "Black Celebration" and "Construction Time Again". Feel free to resort.

And finally, do we call The Undertones post-punk or still punk? It's a similar problem as with Buzzcocks, though whatever they are, both are adorable lovesick teenage fun.

I love Depeche Mode so much. What's your opinion on their post-Violator work? I think they're still one of the best bands around. Playing the Angel is so good... "Precious" is up there as one of my favorite all-time DM songs.

That reminds me, we need a gothic/ebm desk.

For my money, Depeche Mode invented darkwave back in 1984, which is some feat. Their legacy is absolutely huge.

As for their latter albums, Playing the Angel is good, Exciter is crap, Ultra is good. I guess the good album/crap album routine. But hell, they can do anything they want!

Yeah, Exciter is probably my least favorite DM record. I do like a few songs on it, though. Ultra is a very good record. "It's No Good" is another favorite song of mine.

I absolutely agree with both paragraphs.
I'm yet to meet anyone who still likes Exciter - emphasis on still, they all liked it upon coming out ... I wonder if the same thing will happen to "Playing The Angel"? I only really like half of it, mostly the songs that wouldn't have been too out of place on "Violator" or "Songs Of Faith And Devotion", i.e. "John The Revelator", "Lilian", "A Pain That I'm Used To" et cetera, though it works surprisingly nice as an entirety as well.

    Not forgetting "Precious". :)

    Which is, rather.

... having said that though, bands like Camouflage are out-DMing DM.

"Sensor" is much better than any DM release since "Violator". Which is a tribute, if anything else.

Sounds like another band I should check out. My list has been growing very rapidly since joining this group a few days ago.
