  • Maplejet's thoughts - 02/08/2011 - Super Bowl Edition

    8. Feb. 2011, 6:46 von maplejet

The Steelers got owned on Sunday...well, it came down to the wire. Lil Wayne was dancing and getting drunk, while Wiz Khalifia's fad song came to a crashing end. The cheese were out in full fashion, the terrible towels fell flat to the ground. Aaron Rodgers hoisted up his belt. Rumors indicate that it could be the start of a dynasty in Green Bay, a team not owned by a owner like Jerry Jones, but by the people of Green Bay.

But...several other things happened in the music scene.

Now Rise for the singing of the National Anthem

First, the national anthem. Well, before that, some girl from Glee sang America the Beautiful....now, I've had enough of the NFL always selecting people (mainly "good-looking" females) from music pop shows to do the national anthems and patriotic songs. And really, this rendition of America the Beautiful, uninspired. Seriously, this needs to stop now.

But the real issue was Christina Aguilera's rendition of the national anthem. Yes, she missed a line. Stop making a big deal like you're a fucking stupid pretenious Radiohead fan always making a big deal of a dumb stupid fucking radio edit for the song Creep, which was just one fucking word. Grow up...ahem, back on topic. So yeah, she missed a word, Americans make a big deal about it. It's a mistake. A mistake. Sometimes, you're caught in the moment that you make a mistake like this. Let it go. She has sung a ton of national anthems in her career. It's just one mix-up. Let it go and focus on other things.

Now without the mess-up, it still was a below average rendition of the National Anthem. And once again, we must wonder why of all people, she was selected to sing the national anthem. Honestly, someone from the Dallas area should have been the one singing the national anthem. The first super bowl in Dallas (neoliberals will call this the corporate greed bowl). But Christina Aguilera looked like a goddess after the Halftime show.

    Halftime Debuckle

In the last journal entry, I mentioned how people were not thrilled about the selection of the Black Eyed Peas. The last halftime show featuring The Who took in very mixed reviews. The selection of another dad rock band didn't work out well, especially when the band was past their prime. So what does the NFL do? They decided to select a modern act while remaining "safe". But as the halftime show commenced...

It was terrible. One song after another....I Gotta Feeling to Boom Boom Pow, and then Lets Get It Started. Vocally bad, abuse of auto-tune, no flow, no style, no substance. But just when you think it couldn't get worse...a familiar riff to a classic hard rock ballad started playing...and then...he showed up. Slash of Guns N' Roses. Some thought he was going to "save the day"...but others like me watched in horror as Fergie went out and tore down Sweet Child O' Mine. Axl Rose most certainly enjoyed his B-day gift from Slash. Usher showed up later (some hoping HE would save the day)...oh wait, it's an autotune song OMG. Not much could be said as the songs continued to flow.

And the last one of the night, this time, it was fans of Dirty Dancing who put their hand on their forehead once they heard Fergie and will.i.am got out in The Time (Dirty Bit). By then, it was over. The halftime shows in the past with *NSYNC/Aerosmith/Brtiney Spears ruining Walk This Way. And that wardrobe malfunction with a show dragged down by pointless performances by Nelly, Kid Rock, and Justin Timberlake with the cream of the crop.

I expected the show to be not good. But I didn't expect it to be a failure of massive proportions. Some claimed the sound mixing was not good, but really, we go from the OK The Who to a colossial failure that the Black Eyes Peas showed us on Sunday. I had to listen to the original and only good version Sweet Child O' Mine several times. One must wonder why Slash even decided to play guitar for something that spelled disaster from the start. I still respect him as one of the best guitarists of all-time, but his cameo is something better not remembered of him.

Once again, on the message board for the NFL on my home site, everyone began dropping names of acts that should have been...from the way too extreme Lamb of God, to the way too hipster Animal Collective. From Daft Punk to Depeche Mode. One person felt that because there was no wardrobe malfunction, it was now safe to allow Rihanna into the halftime show. Others say enough is enough and it's time for rappers like Kanye West and Eminem to finally take the stage. And of course, some are now calling for Lady Gaga to come out (in a meat dress of course) and save "pop".

Bottom line is...the NFL failed again. They seem to be stuck between a rock and a hard place. They looked too far back for acts, and too modern for acts. They looked in the wrong places. Why even bother with a halftime show if trapped between these 2 choices. But what about the late 80s and 90s. What about Metallica, Pearl Jam, Foo Fighters, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. All bands with mainstream appeal, yet none of them are too old, or too young. What about Rush, an actual old band that's still ripping it out and releasing new stuff? Even Iron Maiden sells out arenas worldwide, even in North America. Why not them? And AC/DC is still a major name. Easily appeal to both youngsters and old rockers.

And no, don't bother with Justin Bieber. At this point, the announcement of him in a halftime show would almost lead to a massive firestorm to the point that the show would be cancelled within days.

I'll be honest. It's gonna take days to get these images out of my head. But aside from the show, there were a few other things to look at. Two commercials involving musicians:

JUSTIN BIEBER HAS JUST TROLL'D YOU
Speaking of Justin Bieber, he was actually in a commercial with the Prince of Darkness. What? You mean Ozzy Osbourne? Why yes. A commercial for Best Buy involving one of their services. Apparently, Bieber did not impress Ozzy. But a employee working on the set lets Ozzy know that he thinks Bieber sounds like a girl.

Suddenly, millions exploded in laughter as Justin Bieber was insulted. Victory...

Actually, no. It was actually Bieber playing a double-role on you, disguised as that beared employee, insulting...himself. Yeah, that's right. You got troll'd by the guy you hate the most. How does it feel now?

Another reminder, please don't go and tell everyone to invade Bieber's videos to express your hate on youtube. If you didn't know, Bieber gets paid for every view of his video, as well as your comments. You're only making him reacher, and it's not a good idea.

    EMINEM AND DETROIT RISES
The other noteworthy commericial last night was...well, let's be honest first...once again, most of the commercials were not good. Some relied on old ideas, others were a waste of space (seriously, tell GoDaddy to stop...waste of money). The beer commercials were weaker than usual too. And some like the Bridgestone Reply All and the Doritos finger lick....really...stupid and not funny.

There was one commercial that stood out for me...it was not a funny commercial. It was a serious one with Chrysler introducing a new luxury car. But the way it was done was a tribute to a city that suffered hard times. And the man driving the car, none other than rapper Eminem (which was actually his second commercial). The 2 minute ad was well done and brought a chill down my spine. (no different, I'm up in Buffalo and we have several companies here that make key parts for car companies, so it's just as important for us). To me, it was the best of the night, not the slapstick humor ads that appeal to Family Guy fans.

Oh, the NFL fans ad was good too. To erase the poor pop performance of the night, I can rely on this to remove the dark spots.

AND HOLY CRAP, NEW RELEASES AHEAD

Finally, let me discuss some new releases that I'm anticipating:
*First, Rise Against is going ahead with an Endgame. It won't be released for a few months, but the single "Help Is On The Way" is out. It's not a high-tier song IMO, but it give me more than enough hype for the album for me.

*Also out with a new single is rapper Lupe Fiasco...that's right, Lasersis coming out in March...and how about a new single...[track artist=Lupe Fiasco]Words I Never Said (feat. Skylar Grey)
. Kick ass, and is heavily political. The managers wanted a poppy song with rhymes about girls and cars. If girls and cars equated to politics, Gaza, Glenn Beck, and the state of the world, then I guess he won.

*The Foo Fighters said their new album was going to be heavy...and the 2 teasers for their yet named 7th studio album, speak true. I believe this album will be much sick, and may outclass their work from the 2000s.

*Apparently, Cake released a new album last month. Haven't really listened to it enough as I'm still diving through their discography, but I will touch it later. It actually charted at #1 on the billboards despite selling like crap. I heard reviews are mixed. But then again, I won't let others decide my music taste.

*There are several more big releases set of this year. I expect Incubus and Red Hot Chili Peppers to also release some stuff. Possibly The Offspring as well.

But didn't Radiohead say something about a new album they were working on last year? All it takes is final mixing and the next thing you know, it'll be released and this site....you know what's next.

Last but not least, I need to clarify one thing regarding hipsters. I do not like hipsters as people. Especially the ones that reek of elitism, think they have supreme taste, get their attitudes from pitchfork, etc. It does not mean I hate their music. There are some stuff I'll enjoy that's popular among the indie-cred hipsters, but there's also a lot of trash too. This goes for all scenes and all time periods (I'm looking at you, dad rockers).

That's pretty much it for now. Here to another February.

  • 2010. The best summary evar. Yeah, can't think of original and catchy title.

    31. Dez. 2010, 17:57 von MATI9630

trying to avoid listening to stuff I won't find any interest in, that explains relatively high ratings
well, actually on my scale 6 = average + uninteresting, yet listenable (it could be for example 4 in your scale, it's 6 in mine)

9,5/10 + the title of the album of the year

    7 Sinners - Helloween

Honestly, I think that's better than almost perfect Gambling with the Devil. Helloween slays when it doesn't fuck around (Unarmed, for example). Their gig was also a killer.

I'd make a short summary of this year movies also, but I've only seen a small amount... yet. Anyway, Shutter Island became one of my personal favorites. Just watch it.

    Feel free to comment blahblah~
Let's hope 2011 will be even better in terms of music (and everything else).

    That's it, folks.

  • Equilibrium is the worst band ive ever seen live.

    20. Sep. 2010, 14:39 von tomcatha

    Sun 19 Sep – Heidenfest 2010

Horrible snoozefest, they have just 1 song and keep on playing it for an hour. Everything whats wrong with modern "viking/folk" metal aka keyboardy power metal with black metal influences.
I bet all the kiddies who enjoyed this band left for Twilight of the Gods, which were in the end by far the best act of the day.
Ill just go back to my Skyclad, Cruachan and Moonsorrow.

  • Gamefaqs Board 8's top 100 favorite bands/artists

    13. Jul. 2010, 3:42 von maplejet

Yeah, I returned to a gaming board last year that's more lenient towards Nintendo and RPGs and not so lenient to Call of Duty/Halo, and decided once again to run through the top 100 music artist/bands among the members. It was divided into 3 parts...their top 20 favorite artists/bands, their favorite artists/bands by genre (Pop, rock, metal, punk, R&B, hip-hop, jazz, electronic, classical, folk, funk, other) and their favorite artists/genres by time period (pre-60s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s and onwards). The final list...well..

First, the metalheads slept, did pay attention, or fill out all phases, so the top metal bands do not show up until #30. Second, it felt like alternative/indie nerds dominated voting. Third...a certain pop act was discussed in mad numbers every day, not only bringing in haters, but bringing in fans. It's up to you to discuss whether or not your top 100 is better...probably not if you listen to just one genre of music or one time period of music and nothing else.

  • THE RULES OF THE METAL GODS (transcribed by Thrush)

    28. Feb. 2010, 8:03 von THRUSHTILLDEATH

One night I was at my computer listening to an original pressing of Black Sabbath's first album while discussing witchcraft and Occultism on myspace with a few of my friends (who happen to be in KVLT and TR00 black metal bands that only released 50 copies of their one and only recording, and only 10 out of 50 of those albums sold, the recording was recorded on a faulty tape cassette player from 1984) a guy named Gary Gus confronted me and told me that he has come down from Metal Heaven to tell me that I am the Tr00est metal head on Earth and has a reward for me. He would read out the rules of the metal gods, which to be honest was incredibly fucking BORING! what a shit cunt! Firstly he tells me I am the Tr00est KVLT Metull guy on planet Earth now he is lecturing me.

so according to Gary Gus AKA The Mettul God you must follow these rules, its a 3 strikes and your out thing, break 3 of them and you will NEVER reach metal heaven and but worst of all be a completely failed P0000000SER!!!!11111

1 Ignore people who dont like Metal they aren't worth your time.

2 you're not aloud to think its okay for Thrash and Grind bands to forget their punk influence.

3 No Deathcore, Nu Metal or Metalcore if you listen to it you are sinning! The metal gods HATE sinning!!

4 We all love the band Death!!!(except for a few fags who wont be going to Metal Heaven) but name dropping them to seem cool makes you a poser, and stop saying they are "DA GREATIST DETH METUL BAND EVA11111!!!!!!!" because their DM bands that are also just as great.

5 Death>Morbid Angel>Possessed don't agree? well fuck you then! THE METAL GODS WILL MAKE YOU SUFFER!

6 Black Sabbath or get the fuck out!

7 Doom Metal is awesome if you think its slow! and boring you have the the smartness are cleverness that good ol' drugged fucked Ozzy has in his old age.

8 666 refers to Iron Maiden not Satan, AND no im not 555 and your not 666 you fucking maggoty ass poser!

9 No Dyed Black Emo Haircuts and no 40 + piercings! sorry if you have those then you cannot be in our KVLT and TR00 Metal Club.

10 No Cannibal Corpse's album Kill is NOT their best album! ITS NOT EVEN A FUCKING DEATH METAL ALBUM!!!!! If you want to hear Cannibal Corpse playing Death Metal listen to anything else they did, but if you want them playing awesome Death Metal listen to the first 4 with Chris Barnes, but not Six Feet Under!!!!

11 Korn did NOT bring back metal in the 90's!

12 If you own Cryptopy's: The Unspoken King, Entombed: Vampire Blues, and any thing that In Flames did in the 2000's YOU WILL BE BANISHED FROM METAL HEAVEN!!!!!

13 the more shows you go to the more metal points you get, and when you harm or injure a scene poser you hit the metal jack pot! ;)

14 NO KARATE BULLSHIT IN THE MOSH!!!!!!

15 Its Okay if your a Black Metal band to steal your lyrics from books on Satanism, Occultism and Witch Craft and its also okay if you are a Goregrind band and steal your lyrics from Medical Journals

There was another 2 pages but they somehow disappeared when I went to Norway, It got stolen by some assholes who ran out of Joint rolling papers, FUCKING ASSHOLES!!!

If there are any mistakes its the Metal god's fault so blame them NOT me!

  • Scandinavia To Re-Invent Traditional Heavy Metal? - An Ode To 40 Years Of Metal

    25. Feb. 2010, 5:08 von MasterOfPizza99

As of Saturday February 13 2009, Metal’s initial offering - the reknown and revered Black Sabbath self-titled LP turned 40 years old. For fans of the music, including myself, this begs the question of who will follow this style long after the inevitable demise of the band?

You can’t kill the Metal, and we can all agree that Scandinavia is perhaps the coolest region for Metal. Do you love Death Metal, Black Metal, among other dozens of forms of Extreme Metal? A substantial cut of their asses are certainly owed to that specific region for their creations and maintenance. Do you love Traditional Heavy Metal - As in the prototypical sound of the more classical guard of the genre; pioneered by the formative works of Sabbath, Rush and Rainbow, the expansive New Wave of British Heavy Metal dream team of impact players Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Motörhead & Venom, alongside Diamond Head, Angel Witch, early-Def Leppard and Doom Metallers Witchfinder General and Pagan Altar, as well as American acts such as Pentagram, Saint Vitus/ The Obsessed, Trouble and Manilla Road?

Perhaps you’ve imagined what Jethro Tull might have sounded like if Tony Iommi stayed…. Ok, maybe I’m the only one who’s ever pondered this for more than 5 seconds (needless to say, that would’ve been awesome) but nonetheless up the irons and check out all these awesome Scandinavian Traditional Heavy Metal acts. And add any that I most likely missed.

    - Candlemass: “Please let me die in Solitude”

And so we begin with arguably the most historically significant of the batch. Candlemass, alongside Bathory and At The Gates represent Sweden’s most notable of bands. And you’ve probably heard “Witches” a few times if you own Brutal Legend. Their career is highlighted by an 80s 4-album hot streak with Epicus Doomicus Metallicus/Nightfall/Ancient Dreams/Dark Reflections, a brief stint with Michael Amott in the 90s whom I will talk about more, and a fierce re-emergence of the 80s lineup in 2005. Messiah Marcolin, their most recognized member has since moved on, but the band has settled upon the suitably proven Robert Lowe of Solitude Aeturnus &Concept of God and continue to kick ass to this day.

    - Spiritual Beggars: In between the time period after Michael Amott left his post in the unforgettably gruesome death metal assault Carcass, and before his current melodic death metal project Arch Enemy hit its stride, he formed this more traditional rock-oriented band corresponding with Carcass’ traditional rock direction that they went with Swansong. Prior to Amott’s involvement with the recent Carcass reunion, his Spiritual Beggars works alternated with his Arch Enemy. Oh what will ever become of what looks to be the Swedish equivalent to Monster Magnet? The band also features Per Wiberg currently of Opeth.

    - Grand Magus: Traditional Doom Metal band featuring the lead singer of Spiritual Beggars. Have recently signed on to Roadrunner Records – lets just hope they won’t have to be involved with curtain-jerking any Nickelcrap or Shitknot tours.

    - Count Raven: Another active Swedish traditional doom cut from the 80s. Vocalist Christian Lindersson (AKA Chritus) served time with Saint Vitus, recording the album C.O.D. with the band, and also supplies vocals for Lord Vicar and Terra Firma, which I will also include in the list.

    - Reverend Bizarre: Monstrous Traditional Doom Metal from Finland; disbanded since 2007. In The Rectory… & II – Crush The Insects are among favorites of the author…and the band name is simply made of epic and win. Guitarist Peter Vicar has since formed:

    - Lord Vicar: After Reverend Bizarre called it a day, guitarist Peter Vicar formed this band. Also featuring the aforementioned Christian Lindersson.

    - Terra Firma: Chritus’s 3rd band rooted heavily upon Traditional Doom.

    - Spiritus Mortis: Finnish Traditional Doom now featuring Sami Hynninen formerly of Reverend Bizarre and The Puritan

    - Isole: Recent Swedish Traditional Doom.

    - Minotauri: Now defunct Finnish Traditional Doom.

    - Witchcraft: Smashing Retro-style Traditional Heavy Metal with elements of early ‘Stones-styled Rhythm & Blues Rock and Psychedelia. They played the one-night Ozzfest in 2008 as a second-stage act. Recommended!

    - Graveyard: Another pick from the author (their S/T is one of the most even traditional Rock albums from this time period that I’ve heard)…Traditional Heavy Metal fused with elements of formative Rock ‘n’ Roll in the style of Cream and Benefit-era Jethro Tull…Also draws elements of Soundgarden and Danzig. Have recently toured the States with CKY and The Sword.

    - Asteroid: Much like Graveyard’s Blues-flavoring of modern traditional rock, with just a bit more Kyuss/ Orange Goblin-ish Stoner elements. Their second album has recently been released and so far is among a top release for the author for this year.

    - Sideburn: More of the same variation as above, but goodness does that band name kick ass or what?

    - Burning Saviours: Their name is a reference to a mind-melting Pentagram tune. They seem to play doomified folk-style heavy metal – kickass! After releasing a few albums, they too have since called it a day. Bummer.

    - Enforcer: Swedish 80s-style metal. Recently did a headlining run throughout the US.

    - The Devil's Blood: Ominous female-fronted Danish psychedelia that looks to tear up Wacken, Metalcamp, Party.San, Hole In The Sky and Hellfest. And if my mind serves me right, have recently toured the US alongside Pentagram. Man, I wish I lived in Europe…

    - Dead Man: Obscure Swedish psychedelia related to Graveyard.

    - Black Bonzo: And now we go to the prog acts. This could definitely represent the modern, Swedish equivalent to Yes, with Folk-inspired vocals.

    - Beardfish: Swedish Prog similar to 80s-King Crimson among others. Were slated to appear on the 2009 edition of the Prog Nation tour, but things apparently went awry with the record company which forced them to drop.
    Last, but not least…

    - Dungen: Swedish Hippie Music?!? Awesome.

    - Dollhouse: Just for fun – Modern Garage Rock!! Oh the things that you’ll find in a magazine sampler…

In closing: Praise, Metal lives 40 years and strong! Doom On, Up The Irons, and Long Live Rock as well.
