    Little Wings

    Little Wings - Magic Wand

    I'm surprised Little Wings isn't a little more well-known.

    http://www.last.fm/music/Little+Wings

They're actually on K records, but they're not in the Artist Connections list.

    Lifted

Lifted by the infamous Bright Eyes was a life changer.

How, I wonder, could we include Sufjan Stevens, and exclude the brilliant Bright Eyes!?

    Done!!
well...i've never added Bright Eyes before, because i thought they're more like indie-pop to me than a lo-fi band. They are good band, but their sound and the whole productions are so well-made. I'd rather group them with bands like, The Decemberists, Of Montreal which all of them are also great...Ummm I'm still not sure, what do you guys think?

I see your point... Though I also think some of the best Bright Eyes is the early Lo-Fi stuff. That is where the real Bright Eyes is to me. I really love Letting of the Happiness, and really despise Digital Ash.

Either way, I loooove this group!

    Slanted and Enchanted!!

also one of the best albums ever! all the songs are great, and giving an unique feeling with extraordinary vocal of stephen malkmus and with noisy pave sound.

I also wanted to throw in Damon Albarn's "Mali Music"

Listen to it twice and you will love it forever.

Anyone else know of any side projects like this that are worth giving a listen to?

  • re:

"Lo-fi" stuff that hasn't been mentioned thus far:

Monroe Mustang- Plain Sweeping Themes for the Unprepared (okay...maybe more snore-core than lo-fi, but they did record it in their living room, so it squeaks in on a technicality).

Anything by Unbunny is top-notch. Plus, he used to live in the same town I do, before moving out west somewhere.

  • Uh, not my favorites or anything (That would WESTING BY MUSKET OR SEXTANT), but here's a few decent lo-fi bands that have epitonic prescences, and hence legal downloadable mp3s:

    Sleepyhead
    Bingo Trappers
    The Furtips

  • Oh, man! Another very important thing I forgot! R. Stevie Moore! Quinessential lo-fi artist! He's self-released over 300 tapes since the 1970s!

Here's his song What Can't I Write a Hit, and here's a bunch more free mp3s of him. These are really lo-fi mp3s, though!

The Amps! Sweetness! Thanks for these!

  • um

How is NMH not included? I mean Neutral Milk Hotel's other middle name is lo-fi. Like "Neutral Milk Lo-Fi Hotel," ya just like that. A little know fact that not very many people know about, which is to say that a small amout of people do know about it...

ps by included i mean in what the group is about thing on the main page and yes i could be more vague.

okay i just looked i meant the description part.

Doubt can be introduced into any system of thought, even this one.

  • I think Bright Eyes should qualify as lo-fi.
My favourite lo-fi album is In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel, no contest. One of the best albums of all time.

Agreed, thelonelyperson. Neutral Milk Hotel isn't "Lo-Fi." "Lo-Fi" is Neutral Milk Hotel. Most NMH fans will probably already know The Mountain Goats, but John Darnielle had to be mentioned.

That said, let's give props to The Shaggs and Kleenex/Lilliput; these are two bands that no lo-fi fan's life is complete without.

The new album of swede Nicolai Dunger; "Nicolai Dunger sjunger Edith Södergran" is very good. In swedish, rootsy/jazzy and superb.
