Interesting article about Mexican folkloric music

I just found this, it reviews a number of interesting cds and the work of Lila Downs as well as describing some of the folkloric genres of Mexican music and their instrumentation.
Viva La Musica de Mexico! Exploration of Mexican Folkloric Music Part I.

Yes I was listening to her stuff yesterday. What a range her voice has! She can sing in a husky jazzy voice or that nazal folkloricky sound. She sings in English, Spanish and umpteen indiginous languages in styles from jazz to cumbia to norteño to ranchera. What's not to like? She has a sense of humor and a sense of social justice. She has a whole album where she sings about the plight of the migrant worker and those who work in the Maquiladoras. I'm going to do something I don't usually do and recommend the same artist 2 days in a row. There's a funny cumbia sung in the Mayan language you've just got to hear! And for the uninitiated, no, all Indian languages don't sound the same, and all Mexican languages don't even sound the same.

  • I have to agree with you, her voice is amazing. I must say, i was pleasantly suprised when i heard her songs. i didnt really know what to expect but my god shes got a great voice!
